Co–W alloy clusters with extended solubility of W in hcp Co were produced by inert-gas condensa-tion. The structural state of the as-deposited Co–W clusters was found to be critically dependent on processing parameters such as the cooling scheme and sputtering power. For the water-cooled clus-ters, the mean size and percent crystalline were strongly dependent on sputtering power, while the percent crystalline of the liquid nitrogen-cooled clusters was not as affected by the sputtering power. At low sputtering powers, the water-cooled clusters were predominantly amorphous, but became increasingly more crystalline as the sputtering power increased. Nanocrystalline Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 thin films have been synthesized with various grain sizes by a sol-gel method on polycrystalline silicon substrates. The morphology, magnetic, and microwave absorption properties of the films calcined in the 673–1073 K range were studied with x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, and evanescent microwave microscopy. All films were uniform without microcracks. Increasing the calcination temperature from 873 to 1073 K and time from 1 to 3 h resulted in an increase of the grain size from 12 to 27 nm. The effect of the crystallinity and the grain texturing of CoPt hard layers on exchange coupled Fe/CoPt soft/hard magnetic systems was studied using gradient thickness multilayer thin films. We have studied the hard layer structures by transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction, and characterized the exchange coupling interaction through magnetization loops obtained by the magneto-optical Kerr effect measurement. We found that exchange coupling strongly depends on the crystalline characteristics of the CoPt hard layer. There is correlation between the mixture of different grain orientations of the CoPt hard layer and coupling efficiency. In particular, interlayer coupling is enhanced when there …

In this paper, the temperature dependence of the hysteretic processes of Co nanowires, squarelly ordered in an array prepared by electrodeposition in nanopores of alumina membranes was analyzed. Both the magnetostatic interactions induced in the nanowires arrays and the thermal stresses (radial, azimuthal and axial stresses), which appear during the cooling of the system (nanowire and alumina template) from room temperature to 3 K was evaluated. The analysis of thermal induced stresses provides useful informations concerning the magnetic anisotropy in the Co nanowires. Permalloy antidot arrays with different square hole sizes ( , , and ) have been fabricated by means of electron-beam lithography and lift-off techniques. The smaller square hole size results in enhanced remanence and reduced coercivity in the antidot array. Multiple resonance modes were clearly observed for the magnetic field applied normal to the array plane, and double uniform resonance modes occurred when the field deviated more than 30° from the normal to the plane. We have fabricated Fe∕Sm–Co bilayers with gradient Fe thicknesses in order to systematically study the dependence of exchange coupling on the thickness of the Fe layer. The Fe layer was deposited at two different temperatures (150 and 300°C) to study the effect of deposition temperature on the exchange coupling. Magneto-optical Kerr effect and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) have been employed as nondestructive rapid characterization tools to map the magnetic properties of the gradient samples. Systematic enhancement in exchange coupling between the soft layer and the hard layer is observed as the soft layer thickness is decreased. Separate exchange couplings …
