Adsorption-Controlled Growth Of Bivo4 By Molecular-Beam Epitaxy, D. A. Hillsberry, D. A. Tenne

Single-phase epitaxial films of the monoclinic polymorph of BiVO4 were synthesized by reactive molecular-beam epitaxy under adsorption-controlled conditions. The BiVO4 films were grown on (001) yttria-stabilized cubic zirconia (YSZ) substrates. Four-circle x-ray diffraction, scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), and Raman spectroscopy confirm the epitaxial growth of monoclinic BiVO4 with an atomically abrupt interface and orientation relationship (001)BiVO4 ∥ (001)YSZ with [100]BiVO4 ∥ [100]YSZ. Spectroscopic ellipsometry, STEM electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS), and x-ray absorption spectroscopy indicate that the films have a direct band gap of 2.5 ± 0.1 eV.

Physical origin of DNA condensation by multivalent cations remains unsettled. Here, we report quantitative studies of how one DNA-condensing ion (Cobalt3+ Hexammine, or Co3+Hex) and one nonDNA-condensing ion (Mg2+) compete within the interstitial space in spontaneously condensed DNA arrays. As the ion concentrations in the bath solution are systematically varied, the ion contents and DNA-DNA spacings of the DNA arrays are determined by atomic emission spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction, respectively. To gain quantitative insights, we first compare the experimentally determined ion contents with predictions from exact numerical calculations based on nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann equations. The structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of Zn0.95Co0.05O, Zn0.95Fe0.05O, and Zn0.90Fe0.05Co0.05O nanoparticles prepared by a sol-gel method are presented and discussed. X-ray diffraction and optical analysis indicated that high spin Co2+ ions substitute for the Zn2+ ions in tetrahedral sites. 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy showed the presence of isolated paramagnetic Fe3+ ions in both Fe doped and Fe+Co co-doped ZnO, however, no evidence of ferromagnetically ordered Fe3+ ions is observed. Co–W alloy clusters with extended solubility of W in hcp Co were produced by inert-gas condensa-tion. The structural state of the as-deposited Co–W clusters was found to be critically dependent on processing parameters such as the cooling scheme and sputtering power. For the water-cooled clus-ters, the mean size and percent crystalline were strongly dependent on sputtering power, while the percent crystalline of the liquid nitrogen-cooled clusters was not as affected by the sputtering power. At low sputtering powers, the water-cooled clusters were predominantly amorphous, but became increasingly more crystalline as the sputtering power increased.
