Evolution Of The Band Structure Of Β-In2 S3−3x O3x Buffer Layer With Its Oxygen Content, N. Barreau, S. Marsillac, J. C. Bernède, L. Assmann

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The evolution of the band structure of β-In2 S3−3x O3x (BISO) thin films grown by physical vapor deposition, with composition x, is investigated using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It is shown that the energy difference between the valence-band level and the Fermi level remains nearly constant as the optical band gap of the films increases. As a consequence, the difference between the conduction band level and the Fermi level increases as much as the optical band gap of the films. The calculation of the electronic affinity [ ] of the BISO thin films shows that it decreases linearly from 4.65 …

The Temporally Filtered Navier-Stokes Equations: Propertes Of The Residual Stress, C. D. Pruett, T. B. Gatski, Chester E. Grosch, W. D. Thacker

CCPO Publications

Recent interest in the development of a unifying framework among direct numerical simulations, large-eddy simulations, and statistically averaged formulations of the Navier-Stokes equations, provides the motivation for the present paper. Toward that goal, the properties of the residual (subgrid-scale) stress of the temporally filtered Navier-Stokes equations are carefully examined. This includes the frame-invariance properties of the filtered equations and the resulting residual stress. Causal time-domain filters, parametrized by a temporal filter width 0infinity, the residual stress is equivalent to the long-time averaged stress, and the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are recovered from the temporally filtered equations. The predicted behavior at the …

Electron Bernstein Wave-X-O Mode Conversion And Electron Cyclotron Emission In Mast, Josef Preinhaelter, Pavol Pavlo, Vladimir Shevchenko, Martin Valovic, Linda L. Vahala, George Vahala

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Electron cyclotron emission (ECE) from overdense plasmas can only occur due to electron Bernstein waves (EBW) mode converting near the upper hybrid region to an electromagnetic wave. Experimental data of ECE observations on MAST are studied and compared with EBW-X-O mode conversion modeling results.

Compact Supercell Method Based On Opposite Parity For Bragg Fibers, Wang Zhi, Ren Guobin, Lou Shuquin, Liang Weijun, Shangping Guo Jan 2003

Compact Supercell Method Based On Opposite Parity For Bragg Fibers, Wang Zhi, Ren Guobin, Lou Shuquin, Liang Weijun, Shangping Guo

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The supercell- based orthonormal basis method is proposed to investigate the modal properties of the Bragg fibers. A square lattice is constructed by the whole Bragg fiber which is considered a supercell, and the periodical dielectric structure of the square lattice is decomposed using periodic functions (cosine). The modal electric field is expanded as the sum of the orthonormal set of Hermite-Gaussian basis functions based on the opposite parity of the transverse electric field. The propagation characteristics of Bragg fibers can be obtained after recasting the wave equation into an eigenvalue system. This method is implemented with very high efficiency …

Comparison Between The Ultraviolet Emission From Pulsed Microhollow Cathode Discharges In Xenon And Argon, Isfried Petzenhauser, Leopold D. Biborosch, Uwe Ernst, Klaus Frank, Karl H. Schoenbach Jan 2003

Comparison Between The Ultraviolet Emission From Pulsed Microhollow Cathode Discharges In Xenon And Argon, Isfried Petzenhauser, Leopold D. Biborosch, Uwe Ernst, Klaus Frank, Karl H. Schoenbach

Bioelectrics Publications

We measured the dynamic I–V characteristics and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) emission lines of the second continuum in xenon (170 nm) and argon (130.5 nm) from pulsed microhollow cathode discharges (MHCD). For pulse lengths between 1 and 100 μs the dynamic I–V characteristics are similar in both inert gases. Only the time variation of the VUV emission line at 170 nm for xenon can be related to the dimer excited states. In argon the energy transfer between the Ar*2 dimers and the oxygen impurity atoms is responsible for a qualitatively different time behavior of the resonance line at 130.5 nm. …

Asymmetries in quasi-elastic 3He(e→, e 'p) have been measured at a momentum transfer of 0.67 (GeV/c)2 and are compared to a calculation which takes into account relativistic kinematics in the final state and a relativistic one-body current operator. With an exact solution of the Faddeev equation for the 3He-ground state and an approximate treatment offinal state interactions in the continuum good agreement is found with the experimental data.

Monte Carlo Analysis Of Gan-Based Gunn Oscillators For Microwave Power Generation, R. P. Joshi, V. Sridhara, P. Shah, R. D. Del Rosario Jan 2003

Monte Carlo Analysis Of Gan-Based Gunn Oscillators For Microwave Power Generation, R. P. Joshi, V. Sridhara, P. Shah, R. D. Del Rosario

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Monte Carlo studies of transferred electron oscillators based on bulk wurtzite GaN are presented. Two structures have been examined: (i) devices with the conventional single notch structure, and (ii) repetitive structures with serial segments to fashion a "multiple domain" device. Wurtzite material has been chosen because of the higher drift velocity and because analytical expressions for the band structure have recently become available. Performance parameters of interest such as the operating frequency, output power, and conversion efficiency are calculated. Variations due to changes in temperature, biasing voltage, and device length are also included. It is shown that multidomain Gunn diodes …

Simple Plane Wave Implementation For Photonic Crystal Calculations, Shangping Guo, Sacharia Albin Jan 2003

Simple Plane Wave Implementation For Photonic Crystal Calculations, Shangping Guo, Sacharia Albin

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A simple implementation of plane wave method is presented for modeling photonic crystals with arbitrary shaped ‘atoms’. The Fourier transform for a single ‘atom’ is first calculated either by analytical Fourier transform or numerical FFT, then the shift property is used to obtain the Fourier transform for any arbitrary supercell consisting of a finite number of ‘atoms’. To ensure accurate results, generally, two iterating processes including the plane wave iteration and grid resolution iteration must converge. Analysis shows that using analytical Fourier transform when available can improve accuracy and avoid the grid resolution iteration. It converges to the accurate results …

We have measured the spin struction functions g2(p) and g(2)(d) and the virtual photon asymmetries A(2)(p) and A(2)(d) over the kinetmatic range 0.02 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.8 and 0.7 less than or equal to Q2 less than or equal to 20 GeV2 by scattering 29.1 and 32.3 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons from transversely polarized NH3 and (LiD)-Li-6 targets. Our measured g2 approximately follows the twist-2 Wandzura-Wilczek calculation. The twist-3 reduced matrix elements d(2)(p) and d(2)(n) are less than two standard deviations from zero. The data are inconsistent with the Burkhardt-Cottingham …

We measured the inclusive electron-proton cross section in the nucleon resonance region (W <2.5 GeV) at momentum transfers Q2 below 4.5 (GeV/c)2 with the CLAS detector. The large acceptance of CLAS allowed the measurement of the cross section in a large, contiguous two-dimensional range of Q2 and x, making it possible to perform an integration of the data at fixed Q2 over the significant x interval. From these data we extracted the structure function F2 and, by including other world data, we studied the Q2 evolution of its moments, Mn(Q2), in order to estimate higher twist …

The cross section for the reaction ep→ e'pπ+π- was measured in the resonance region for 1.4 2 < 1.5 GeV2/c2using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory. The data show resonant structures not visible in previous experiments. The comparison of our data to a phenomenological prediction using available information on N* and Δ states shows an evident discrepancy. A better description of the data is obtained either by a sizable change of the properties of the P13(1720) resonance or by introducing a new baryon state, not reported in published analyses.

Measurement Of Correlated Multiple Light Scattering In Utracold Atomic 85Rb, P. Kulatunga, C. I. Sukenik, S. Balik, M. D. Havey, D. V. Kupriyanov, I. M. Sokolov

Physics Faculty Publications

We report an experimental study of correlated multiple light scattering in an ultracold gas of 85Rb confined in a magneto-optic trap. Measurements are made of the polarization dependence of the spatial and spectral profile of light backscattered from the sample. The results show an interferometric enhancement sensitive to coherent multiple scattering in the atomic gas, and strong variations with the polarization of the incident and detected light. The spatial width and peak value of the enhancement are found to be dependent on the sample size. Comparison of all the measurements with realistic quantum Monte Carlo simulations yields a very …

Comprehensive Monte Carlo simulations of the spatial, spectral, and polarization dependence of the backscattering line shape are made and compared with available experimental results.

Interpretation Of The Θ+ As An Isotensor Pentaquark With Weakly Decaying Partners, Simon Capstick, Philip R. Page, Winston Roberts Jan 2003

Interpretation Of The Θ+ As An Isotensor Pentaquark With Weakly Decaying Partners, Simon Capstick, Philip R. Page, Winston Roberts

Physics Faculty Publications

The Θ+(1540), recently observed at LEPS, DIANA and CLAS, is hypothesized to be an isotensor resonance. This implies the existence of a multiplet where the Θ++, Θ+ and Θ0 have isospin-violating strong decays, and the Θ+++ and Θ have weak decays and so are long-lived. Production mechanisms for the weakly-decaying states are discussed. The JP assignment of the Θ is most likely 1/2 or 3/2.

Study Of A Growth Instability Of Γ-In[Sub 2]Se[Sub 3], C. Amory, J. C. Bernede, S. Marsillac Jan 2003

Study Of A Growth Instability Of Γ-In[Sub 2]Se[Sub 3], C. Amory, J. C. Bernede, S. Marsillac

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

γ-In[sub 2]Se[sub 3] thin film are deposited for various substrate temperatures in the range of 523–673 K. This study shows that at 573 and 673 K the thin films are well crystallized with grains aligned along the c axis. Between these temperatures, a domain of instability appears where the γ-In[sub 2]Se[sub 3] thin films have a randomly orientation and the c-lattice parameter increases. The presence of the metastable phase κ-In[sub 2]Se[sub 3], during the growth, can explain the existence of this domain of instability. The insertion of Zn during the preparation process allows us to stabilize the phase κ at …

Coulomb Sum Rule For 4He, J. Carlson, J. Jourdan, Rocco Schiavilla, I. Sick Jan 2003

Coulomb Sum Rule For 4He, J. Carlson, J. Jourdan, Rocco Schiavilla, I. Sick

Physics Faculty Publications

We determine the Coulomb sum for 4He using the world data on 4He(e,e′) and compare the results to calculations based on realistic interactions and including two-body components in the nuclear charge operator. We find good agreement between theory and experiment when using free-nucleon form factors. The apparent reduction of the in-medium GEp implied by IA-interpretation of the L/T-ratios measured in 4He(e,e′p) and 4He(e→,e′p→) is not confirmed.

Physics Faculty Publications

The first measurements of the transferred polarization for the exclusive ep → e'K+ Λ over right arrow reaction have been performed at Jefferson Laboratory using the CLAS spectrometer. A 2.567 GeV beam was used to measure the hyperon polarization over Q2 from 0.3 to 1.5 (GeV/c)2, W from 1.6 to 2.15 GeV, and over the full K+ center-of-mass angular range. Comparison with predictions of hadrodynamic models indicates strong sensitivity to the underlying resonance contributions. A nonrelativistic quark-model interpretation of our data suggests that the s -s quark pair is produced with spins predominantly …
