Photoionization Of Atoms, Anthony F. Starace Nov 1996

Photoionization Of Atoms, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

This chapter outlines the theory of atomic photoionization, and the dynamics of the photon-atom collision process. Those kinds of electron correlation that are most important in photoionization are emphasized, although many qualitative features can be understood within a central field model. The particle-hole type of electron correlations are discussed, as they are by far the most important for describing the single photoionization of atoms near ionization thresholds. Detailed reviews of atomic photoionization are presented in Refs. [I] and 121. Current activities and interests are well-described in two recent books [3,4]

Two-Center Effects In Ion-Atom Collisions: A Symposium In Honor Of M. Eugene Rudd, Lincoln, Ne May 1994 — Contents And Preface, Timothy J. Gay, Anthony F. Starace Oct 1996

Two-Center Effects In Ion-Atom Collisions: A Symposium In Honor Of M. Eugene Rudd, Lincoln, Ne May 1994 — Contents And Preface, Timothy J. Gay, Anthony F. Starace

Following a distinguished career in atomic physics, sketched in the accompanying biography, M. Eugene Rudd retired From the faculty of the University of Nebraska in the spring of 1993. In order to celebrate his many research accomplishments, a two day scientific conference, held on 13-14 May 1994, was organized in Lincoln. It was felt that the special spirit that Rudd brought to the lab would be highlighted by a conference designed to analyze in detail a subject of current research in which he was a pioneer: two center-effects in ion-atom ionizing collisions.

Prior to 1980, primarily as a result of …

Fundamental Aspects Of Atomic Photoionization With High-Brightness Light Sources, Anthony F. Starace, Steven T. Manson Sep 1996

Fundamental Aspects Of Atomic Photoionization With High-Brightness Light Sources, Anthony F. Starace, Steven T. Manson

Anthony F. Starace Publications

The construction of numerous new synchrotron light sources worldwide is providing the means to study atomic and molecular photoionization processes at a level of detail that is unparalleled in even the recent past. Correspondingly, in theory, the availability of supercomputers and, perhaps more important, relatively inexpensive computer workstations, has permitted theoretical calculations to tackle more complex processes than ever before. In short, these technical developments are creating an unprecedented amount of data to be analyzed and understood.

In this volume, many of the experimental and theoretical advances of recent years will be described. We take the point of view in …

Static-Electric-Field Effects On High Harmonic Generation, Min-Qi Bao, Anthony F. Starace Jun 1996

Static-Electric-Field Effects On High Harmonic Generation, Min-Qi Bao, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

High harmonic generation in the presence of a static electric field is analyzed theoretically by an extension of the zero-range potential model treatment of Becker et al [Phys. Rev. A 50, 1540 (1994)]. For H- and a CO2 laser of 5 × 1010 W/cm2 intensity, a static electric field of 100 kV/cm is shown to produce a plateau from the 3rd to the 23rd harmonic in which neighboring even and odd harmonics are of comparable intensity. Furthermore, odd harmonics on the plateau are one or more orders of magnitude more intense than in the absence of the …

Photodetachment Of Li- From The Li 3S Threshold To The Li 6S Threshold, Cheng Pan, Anthony F. Starace, Chris H. Greene Feb 1996

Photodetachment Of Li- From The Li 3S Threshold To The Li 6S Threshold, Cheng Pan, Anthony F. Starace, Chris H. Greene

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Eigenchannel R-matrix calculations (including effects of long-range multipole interactions beyond the reaction volume) for Li- photodetachment partial cross sections from the vicinity of the Li 3s threshold to the Li 6s threshold (3.8 eV ≤ħω≤ 5.65 eV) are presented. Excellent agreement with the relative total cross section measurements of U. Berzinsh et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 74, 4795 (1995)] in the vicinity of the Li 3s and Li 3p thresholds is found. The calculated resonance structures are analyzed in detail. In particular, the energy region between the Li 4s and Li 5 …

Using Symbolic Manipulation To Evaluate Feynman's Path Integral For An Interaction Of The Form F(T) X R, Min-Qi Bao, Anthony F. Starace Jan 1996

Using Symbolic Manipulation To Evaluate Feynman's Path Integral For An Interaction Of The Form F(T) X R, Min-Qi Bao, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Obtaining Feynman's path integral, which is a representation for the system's Green's function, is essential for many physical problems. In this paper, a symbolic algebra program is presented to evaluate analytically Feynman's path integral for an interaction of the form F(t) x r. Such an interaction governs the motion of an electron in the field of one or more lasers as well as in a static electric field.
