It is generally accepted that the main cause of ultracold neutron (UCN) losses in storage traps is upscattering to the thermal energy range by hydrogen adsorbed on the surface of the trap walls. However, the data on which this conclusion is based are poor and contradictory. Here we report a measurement, performed at the Los Alamos National Laboratory UCN source, of the average energy of the flux of upscattered neutrons after the interaction of UCN with hydrogen bound in the semicrystalline polymer PMP (trade name TPX), [C6H12]n. Our analysis, performed with the mcnp code which applies …

Effect Of Director Distortions On Morphologies Of Phase Separation In Liquid Crystals, D. Voloschenko, Oleg P. Pishnyak, Sergij V. Shiyanovskii, Oleg Lavrentovich Oct 2013

Effect Of Director Distortions On Morphologies Of Phase Separation In Liquid Crystals, D. Voloschenko, Oleg P. Pishnyak, Sergij V. Shiyanovskii, Oleg Lavrentovich

Oleg Lavrentovich

We study phase separation from a nematic liquid crystal with spatially nonuniform director gradients. Particles of a phase-separated component, which is either an isotropic fluid (silicone oil) or a nonmesogenic photopolymer, accumulate in the regions with the strongest director distortions, thus reducing the overall energy of the system.

Tilted Photoalignment Of A Nematic Liquid Crystal Induced By A Magnetic Field, Denis Andrienko, Yuri Kurioz, Yuri Reznikov, Charles Rosenblatt, Rolfe Petschek, Oleg Lavrentovich, Darius Subacius Oct 2013

Nematic liquid crystal cells with polyvinyl cinnamate coated substrates were subjected to ultraviolet light. When this was done in the presence of an oblique magnetic field the photoalignment was found to be temporally and thermally robust, with a large pretilt angle and weak polar anchoring. Moreover, two easy axes with equal and opposite pretilt angle were obtained, such that a magnetic field could switch the director from one easy axis to the other. Dielectric Relaxation Behavior Of A Liquid Crystal Showing An Unusual Type Of Antiferroelectric-Ferroelectric-Antiferroelectric Phase Sequence, S. K. Kundu, B. K. Chaudhuri, A. Seed, Antal Jakli Oct 2013

Dielectric Relaxation Behavior Of A Liquid Crystal Showing An Unusual Type Of Antiferroelectric-Ferroelectric-Antiferroelectric Phase Sequence, S. K. Kundu, B. K. Chaudhuri, A. Seed, Antal Jakli

Antal Jakli

The temperature and frequency dependent dielectric relaxation behavior of a liquid crystalline (S)-(+)-1-methylheptyl 4-[2-(4-alkoxyphenyl) thiophene-5-carbonylthiooxy] benzoate system is reported. Interesting successive antiferroelectric-ferroelectric-antiferroelectric (AF-FE-AF) phase transitions are observed in this system resembling the successive phase transitions observed in crystalline Rochelle salt. The smectic-C*(SmC*) to AF1 phase transition (around 103.0 °C) is first order in nature, predicted from the use of Orihara and Ishibashi theory. It is also found that a contribution of the ferroelectric SmC* phase ordering penetrates even in the antiferroelectric AF1 (SmCA*) and AF2 (Sm …

Photoinduced Three-Dimensional Orientational Order In Side Chain Liquid Crystalline Azopolymers, O. Yaroshchuk, K. Kiselev, Yu. Zakrevskyy, T. Bidna, J. Kelly, Liang-Chy Chien, J. Lindau Oct 2013

Photoinduced Three-Dimensional Orientational Order In Side Chain Liquid Crystalline Azopolymers, O. Yaroshchuk, K. Kiselev, Yu. Zakrevskyy, T. Bidna, J. Kelly, Liang-Chy Chien, J. Lindau

We apply experimental technique based on the combination of methods dealing with principal refractive indices and absorption coefficients to study the photoinduced three-dimensional (3D) orientational order in the films of liquid crystalline (LC) azopolymers. The technique is used to identify 3D orientational configurations of trans azobenzene chromophores and to characterize the degree of ordering in terms of order parameters. We study two types of LC azopolymers which form structures with preferred in-plane and out-of-plane alignment of azochromophores, respectively. Using irradiation with the polarized light of two different wavelengths, we find that the kinetics of photoinduced anisotropy can be dominated by …

Electron Irradiation Effects On Ferroelectric Copolymer Langmuir-Blodgett Films, Christina M. Othon, Stephen Ducharme Jun 2011

Electron Irradiation Effects On Ferroelectric Copolymer Langmuir-Blodgett Films, Christina M. Othon, Stephen Ducharme

Christina M Othon

The effect of irradiation on the ferroelectric properties of Langmuir-Blodgett films of the copolymer poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluorethelene) is investigating using 1.26 MeV electrons with dosages from 16 to 110 Mrad. Irradiation causes a systematic decrease in the phase transition temperature, coercive field and polarization of these thin films.

Conductivity And Structural Studies Of Plasticized Polyacrylonitrile (Pan) - Lithium Triflate Polymer Electrolyte Films, Zurina Osman Jan 2011

Conductivity And Structural Studies Of Plasticized Polyacrylonitrile (Pan) - Lithium Triflate Polymer Electrolyte Films, Zurina Osman

Zurina Osman

The effect of different plasticizers on the properties of PAN-LiCF(3)SO(3) polymer electrolytes has been studied. Propylene carbonate (Pc) and ethylene carbonate (EC) having different values of donor numbers, dielectric constant and viscosity have been used as plasticizers. The highest room temperature conductivity for the film in the PAN-LiCF(3)SO(3) system was 3.04 x 10(-4) s cm(-1). The highest room temperature conductivity for the films in the PAN-EC-LiCF(3)SO(3) system and the PAN-PC-LiCF(3)SO(3) system was 1.32 x 10(-3) and 8.64 x 10(-4) S cm(-1). The addition of plasticizers has been found to enhance the conductivity of polymer electrolytes by increasing the amorphous content …

Finite-Difference Time-Domain Calculations Of A Liquid-Crystal-Based Switchable Bragg Grating, Bin Wang, Xinghua Wang, Philip Bos Jun 2004

Finite-Difference Time-Domain Calculations Of A Liquid-Crystal-Based Switchable Bragg Grating, Bin Wang, Xinghua Wang, Philip Bos

Philip J. Bos

A polymer-wall-confined transmissive switchable liquid crystal grating is proposed and investigated by two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain optical calculation and liquid-crystal-director calculation, to our knowledge for the first time. The results show how to obtain optimized conditions for high diffraction efficiency by adjusting the liquid crystal parameters, grating geometric structure, and applied voltages. The light propagation direction and efficiency can be accurately calculated and visualized concurrently.
