Morphology And Transport Properties Of Two-Dimensional Sheet Polymers, Scott Knauert, Jack Douglas, Francis Starr

Francis Starr

Whereas there has been extensive theoretical and experimental investigation of the properties of linear polymer chains in solution, there has been far less work on sheet-like polymers having 2D connectivity and 3D crumpled or collapsed shapes caused by thermal fluctuations, attractive self-interactions, or both. Sheet-like polymers arise in a variety of contexts ranging from self-assembled biological membranes (e.g., the spectrin network of red blood cells, microtubules, etc.) to nanocomposite additives to polymers (carbon nanotubes, graphene, and clay sheets) and polymerized monolayers. We investigate the equilibrium properties of this broad class of polymers using a simple model of a sheet polymer …

Valency Dependence Of Polymorphism And Polyamorphism In Dna-Functionalized Nanoparticles, Wei Dai, Chia Wei Hsu, Francesco Sciortino, Francis W. Starr

Francis Starr

Nanoparticles (NP) functionalized with single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) offer a route to custom-designed, self- assembled nanomaterials with potentially unusual properties. The bonding selectivity of DNA guarantees one-to-one binding to form double-stranded DNA (dsDNA), and an appropriate base sequence results in head-to-tail binding linking NP into networks. We explore the phase behavior and structure of a model for NP functionalized with between 3 and 6 short ssDNA through simulations of a coarse-grained molecular model, allowing us to examine both the role of the number of attached strands (valency) and their relative orientations. The NP assemble into networks where the number of NP …

Appearance Of A Fractional Stokes-Einstein Relation In Water And A Structural Interpretation Of Its Onset, L. Xu, F. Mallamace, Z. Yan, Francis W. Starr, S. V. Buldyrev, H. E. Stanley

Francis Starr

The Stokes–Einstein relation has long been regarded as one of the hallmarks of transport in liquids. It predicts that the self-diffusion constant D is proportional to (τ/T)−1, where τ is the structural relaxation time and T is the temperature. Here, we present experimental data on water confirming that, below a crossover temperature T× ≈ 290 K, the Stokes– Einstein relation is replaced by a ‘fractional’ Stokes–Einstein relation D ∼ (τ/T)−ζ with ζ ≈ 3/5 (refs 1–6). We interpret the microscopic origin of this crossover by analysing the OH- stretch region of the Fourier transform infrared spectrum over a temperature range …

Weak Correlations Between Local Density And Dynamics Near The Glass Transition, J. Conrad, Francis Starr, D. Weitz Jan 2005

Weak Correlations Between Local Density And Dynamics Near The Glass Transition, J. Conrad, Francis Starr, D. Weitz

Francis Starr

We perform experiments on two different dense colloidal suspensions with confocal microscopy to probe the relationship between local structure and dynamics near the glass transition. We calculate the Voronoi volume for our particles and show that this quantity is not a universal probe of glassy structure for all colloidal suspensions. We correlate the Voronoi volume to displacement and find that these quantities are only weakly correlated. We observe qualitatively similar results in a simulation of a polymer melt. These results suggest that the Voronoi volume does not predict dynamical behavior in experimental colloidal suspensions; a purely structural approach based on …

Prediction Of Entropy And Dynamic Properties Of Water Below The Homogeneous Nucleation Temperature, Francis Starr, C. Angell, H. Stanley

Francis Starr

The behavior of thermodynamic and dynamic properties of liquid water at atmospheric pressure in the temperature range between the lower limit of supercooling (TH ≈ 235 K) and the onset of the glassy state at Tg has been the focus of much research, and many questions remain about the properties of water in this region. Since direct measurements on water in this temperature range remain largely infeasible, we use existing experimental measurements of the entropy, specific heat, and enthalpy outside this range to construct a possible form of the en- tropy in the “difficult-to-probe” region. Assuming that the entropy is …

Dynamics Of Deeply Supercooled Water, Francis W. Starr, C. A. Angell, E. La Nave, S. Sastry, A. Scala, F. Sciortino, H. E. Stanley

Francis Starr

We review recent results on the connection between thermodynamics and dynamics in a model for water. We verify the Adam–Gibbs relation between entropy and dynamic properties using computer simulations, which allow direct access to the relevant properties. We combine experimental measurements of entropy with the Adam–Gibbs hypothesis to predict dynamic properties in deeply supercooled states, which are difficult to access experimentally. We find evidence suggesting that the glass transition temperature of water may be significantly higher than previously reported, but is still consistent with recent measurements. Finally, we discuss the hypothesis that the dynamical behavior of deeply supercooled water undergoes …
