Finding Strong Gravitational Lenses With Residual Neural Networks, Christopher Storfer, Andrew Pilon, Varun Ravi, Matthew Domingo

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD

Measuring gravitational lensing by galaxies is the only way to directly study the elusive dark matter. However, gravitational lensing is a very rare phenomenon (~1 in 10,000 galaxies). Our goal is to find new strong gravitational lenses using deep neural networks (“neural nets”). We train our neural nets on a hand-labeled set of images, consisting of both lenses and non-lenses (“the training sample”). We then apply the trained neural nets to a “validation set” to assess the accuracy and precision of its predictions. Given the rarity of lenses, we cannot tolerate a false positive rate higher than 0.1%. This is …

The Population Densities Of Argon Metastable Levels, Nada Khogeer, Chelsy P. Gonzalez, Milka Nikolic Apr 2019

The Population Densities Of Argon Metastable Levels, Nada Khogeer, Chelsy P. Gonzalez, Milka Nikolic

In this experiment, we used the optical emission spectroscopy (OES) method to obtain the main properties of low temperature Argon plasma. The experiment was sustained in powers and pressures that ranges from 30-100 W and 15-100 mTorr. We used numerical methods for the Argon kinetic model to calculate metastable levels and resonant states for the first excited states in low temperature Argon plasma. By finding the ratio of two spectral lines and finding another ratio from a different upper energy level that goes down to the same two lower energy levels, we can construct a system of two nonlinear equations. …

Using Monte Carlo Simulation To Derive Electron Energy Distribution Functions In Argon Plasma, Ivan Sepulveda Apr 2018

Using Monte Carlo Simulation To Derive Electron Energy Distribution Functions In Argon Plasma, Ivan Sepulveda

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD

A two-dimensional Monte-Carlo simulation is used to obtain distribution of electron energies inside low temperature argon plasma. The simulation written using a python script propagates an electron inside plasma by checking whether an electron collides with an argon atom and checking whether an elastic or inelastic collision occurred. Low temperature plasmas are commonly used for plasma etching in the semiconductor and medical fields.

A New Take On Testing: Evaluating Design Systems In Response To The Recent Natural Disaster In Nepal, Jazmine L. Brown May 2016

A New Take On Testing: Evaluating Design Systems In Response To The Recent Natural Disaster In Nepal, Jazmine L. Brown

In this thesis project I analyze the destruction of the 2015 earthquake in Nepal, specifically in the structural and architectural collapse. I have focused my research on the areas with greatest documented destruction and vulnerability, specifically Kathmandu and the settlements in the Middle Hills. The introduction of a new lateral testing mechanism can provided much needed information on the seismic strengths of vernacular construction methods.
