We present the design of a next-generation experiment, n2EDM, currently under construction at the ultracold neutron source at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) with the aim of carrying out a high-precision search for an electric dipole moment of the neutron. The project builds on experience gained with the previous apparatus operated at PSI until 2017, and is expected to deliver an order of magnitude better sensitivity with provision for further substantial improvements. An overview is of the experimental method and setup is given, the sensitivity requirements for the apparatus are derived, and its technical design is described.

Non-Abelian Quasiholes In Lattice Moore-Read States And Parent Hamiltonians, Sourav Manna, Julia Wildeboer, Germán Sierra, Anne E. B. Nielsen

This work concerns Ising quasiholes in Moore-Read type lattice wave functions derived from conformal field theory. We commence with constructing Moore-Read type lattice states and then add quasiholes to them. By use of Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations, we analyze the features of the quasiholes, such as their size, shape, charge, and braiding properties. The braiding properties, which turn out to be the same as in the continuum Moore-Read state, demonstrate the topological attributes of the Moore-Read lattice states in a direct way. We also derive parent Hamiltonians for which the states with quasiholes included are ground states. One advantage of …

In this paper we report the experimental implementation of a theoretically proposed technique for creating a photoionized plasma in the laboratory using x-ray line radiation. Using a Sn laser plasma to irradiate an Ar gas target, the photoionization parameter, ξ = 4πF/Ne, reached values of order 50erg cm s−1, where F is the radiation flux in erg cm−2 s−1. The significance of this is that this technique allows us to mimic effective spectral radiation temperatures in excess of 1 keV. We show that our plasma starts to be collisionally dominated …

Out-Of-Plane (E,2E) Measurements And Calculations On He Autoionizing Levels As A Function Of Incident-Electron Energy, Nicholas L. S. Martin, C. M. Weaver, Brian N. Kim, B. A. Deharak, O. Zatsarinny, K. Bartschat May 2018

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Out-of-scattering-plane (e,2e) measurements and calculations are reported for the three singlet helium 2ℓ2ℓ′ autoionizing levels, with 80, 100, 120, 150, and 488 eV incident-electron energies, and scattering angles 60, 50.8, 45, 39.2, and 20.5, respectively. The kinematics are the same in all cases: the momentum transfer is K = 2.1 a.u., and ejected electrons are detected in a plane that contains the momentum-transfer direction and is perpendicular to the scattering plane. The results are presented as (e,2e) angular distributions energy integrated over …

Pentaquarks With Hidden Charm As Hadroquarkonia, Michael I. Eides, Victor Yu. Petrov, Maxim V. Polyakov Jan 2018

Pentaquarks With Hidden Charm As Hadroquarkonia, Michael I. Eides, Victor Yu. Petrov, Maxim V. Polyakov

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We consider hidden charm pentaquarks as hadroquarkonium states in a QCD inspired approach. Pentaquarks arise naturally as bound states of quarkonia excitations and ordinary baryons. The LHCb Pc(4450) pentaquark is interpreted as a ψ′-nucleon bound state with spin-parity J P =3/2. The partial decay width Γ(Pc(4450) → J / ψ + N) ≈ 11 MeV is calculated and turned out to be in agreement with the experimental data for Pc(4450). The Pc(4450) pentaquark is predicted to be a member of one of the two almost degenerate …

One More Hard Three-Loop Correction To Parapositronium Energy Levels, Michael I. Eides, Valery A. Shelyuto Jul 2017

One More Hard Three-Loop Correction To Parapositronium Energy Levels, Michael I. Eides, Valery A. Shelyuto

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

A hard three-loop correction to parapositronium energy levels of order 7 is calculated. This nonlogarithmic contribution is due to the insertions of one-loop photon propagator in the fermion lines in the diagrams with virtual two-photon annihilation. We obtained ΔE = 0.03297(2)(7 / π3) for this energy shift.

Measurements of element abundances in galaxies from astrophysical spectroscopy depend sensitively on the atomic data used. With the goal of making the latest atomic data accessible to the community, we present a compilation of selected atomic data for resonant absorption lines at wavelengths longward of 911.753 Å (the H I Lyman limit), for key heavy elements (heavier than atomic number 5) of astrophysical interest. In particular, we focus on the transitions of those ions that have been observed in the Milky Way interstellar medium (ISM), the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of the Milky Way and/or other galaxies, and the intergalactic medium …

We report that epitaxial Sr2IrO4 thin-films can be selectively grown using pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Due to the competition between the Ruddlesden-Popper phases of strontium iridates (Srn+1IrnO3n+1), conventional PLD methods often result in mixed phases of Sr2IrO4 (n = 1), Sr3Ir2O7 (n = 2), and SrIrO3 (n = ∞). We have discovered that reduced PLD plume dimensions and slow deposition rates are the key for stabilizing pure Sr2IrO4 phase thin-films, identified by real-time in-situ monitoring of their optical spectra. …

Test Of Target Independence For Free-Free Scattering In A Nd:Yag Laser Field, Nicholas L. S. Martin, B. A. Deharak Jan 2016

Test Of Target Independence For Free-Free Scattering In A Nd:Yag Laser Field, Nicholas L. S. Martin, B. A. Deharak

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We report measurements of one-, two-, and three-photon processes during the elastic scattering of electrons through 90 by helium, argon, and molecular-nitrogen targets, in the presence of 1.17-eV photons from a Nd:YAG laser. The incident energy of the electrons was 200 and 350 eV, and the linear polarization direction of the laser was parallel to the momentum transfer direction. Our measured free-free count rates for the three processes are target independent within the experimental uncertainties, perfectly consistent with the Kroll-Watson approximation, which assumes no interaction of the laser radiation with the target.
