The long-range interaction of excited neutral atoms has a number of interesting and surprising properties such as the prevalence of long-range oscillatory tails and the emergence of numerically large van der Waals C6 coefficients. Furthermore, the energetically quasidegenerate nP states require special attention and lead to mathematical subtleties. Here we analyze the interaction of excited hydrogen atoms in nS states (3 ≤ n ≤ 12) with ground-state hydrogen atoms and find that the C6 coefficients roughly grow with the fourth power of the principal quantum number and can reach values in excess of 240000 (in atomic units) for states …

We employ large-scale Monte Carlo simulations to study a particle-hole symmetric site-diluted quantum rotor model in two dimensions. The ground state phase diagram of this system features two distinct quantum phase transitions between the superuid and the insulating (Mott glass) phases. They are separated by a multicritical point. The generic transition for dilutions below the lattice percolation threshold is driven by quantum uctuations while thetransition across the percolation threshold is due to the geometric uctuations of the lattice. We determine the location of the multicritical point between these two transitions and find its critical behavior. The multicritical exponents read z …

A quantum electrodynamic calculation of the interaction of an excited-state atom with a ground-state atom is performed. For an excited reference state and a lower-lying virtual state, the contribution to the interaction energy naturally splits into a pole term and a Wick-rotated term. The pole term is shown to dominate in the long-range limit, altering the functional form of the interaction from the retarded 1/R7 Casimir-Polder form to a long-range tail - provided by the Wick-rotated term - proportional to cos[2(Em - En)R/(ħc)]/R2, where Em < En is the energy of a virtual state, …

We discuss the ionization of aligned hydrogen molecules into their ionic ground state by 200 eV electrons. Using a reaction microscope, the complete electron scattering kinematics is imaged over a large solid angle. Simultaneously, the molecular alignment is derived from postcollision dissociation of the residual ion. It is found that the ionization cross section is maximized for small angles between the internuclear axis and the momentum transfer. Fivefold differential cross sections (5DCSs) reveal subtle differences in the scattering process for the distinct alignments. We compare our observations with theoretical 5DCSs obtained with an adapted molecular three-body distorted wave model that …

We present experimental and theoretical results for the electron-impact-induced ionization of ground-state helium atoms. Using a high-sensitivity toroidal electron spectrometer, we measured cross-section ratios for transitions leading to the first three excited states of the residual helium ion relative to the transition leaving the ion in the ground state. Measurements were performed for both symmetric- and asymmetric-energy-sharing kinematics. By presenting results as a ratio, a direct comparison can be made between theoretical and experimental predictions without recourse to normalization. The experimental data are compared to theoretical predictions employing various first-order models and a second-order hybrid distorted-wave + convergent R matrix …

Recently, absolute measurements have been reported for double ionization of helium by 5.6 keV electron-impact. At this high energy, one would think that the first Born approximation for the interaction of the projectile with the atom would be valid. However, on the basis of a lowest-order implementation of a Faddeev-type approach, Berakdar concluded that the approximation was not valid. Here we argue that (i) it is valid at this energy and (ii) the previous discrepancy between calculations in the first Born approximation and the overall magnitude of the measurements was due to a poor description of the ground state.

Electron-impact differential cross-section measurements for the excitation of the 2p53s configuration of Ne are reported. The Ne cross sections are obtained using experimental differential cross sections for the electron-impact excitation of the n = 2 levels of atomic hydrogen [Khakoo et al., Phys. Rev. A 61, 012701-1 (1999)], and existing experimental helium differential cross-section measurements, as calibration standards. These calibration measurements were made using the method of gas mixtures (Ne and H followed by Ne and He), in which the gas beam profiles of the mixed gases are found to be the same within our experimental errors. We …

Theoretical results from multistate semirelativistic Breit-Pauli R-matrix calculations and two first-order distorted-wave calculations are presented for electron-impact excitation of krypton from the (4p55s) J = 0,2 metastable states to the (4p55s) and (4p55p) manifolds. Except for a few cases, in which the method to account for relativistic effects becomes surprisingly critical, fair overall agreement between the predictions from the various theoretical models is achieved for intermediate and high energies. However, significant discrepancies remain with the few available experimental data.

Direct Measurement Of Oscillations Between Degenerate Two-Electron Bound-State Configurations In A Rapidly Autoionizing System, Heider N. Ereifej, J. Greg Story

In this paper we report a direct observation of the oscillation between bound-state configurations in a rapidly autoionizing system. Calcium atoms were excited to a pure 4p3/2nd two-electron configuration using a 500-fsec laser pulse. The initial 4p3/2nd doubly excited state is energy degenerate with the 4p1/2n'd states and several continuum channels. Because of the short-pulse excitation, the initial state of the atom is not an energy eigenstate, but a nonstationary wave packet. As a result, oscillations between the two bound configurations were produced. These oscillations were measured by scanning the timing of a second …

When exposed to intense light of ~580 nm, the ground state of K shifts up in energy, passing through two photon resonances with Rydberg states, and finally crossing the two-photon ionization limit. We have used laser pulses of varying duration to study the nature of the population transfer from the ground state to the excited state due to the intensity-tuned resonances encountered during the rising edge of the pulse. A dynamic Floquet approach in which the resonances are treated as avoided crossings of the Floquet energy levels is used to model the population transfer and gives excellent agreement with the …
