Magnetic Resonance Systems Development For Point-Of-Care Mri Platforms, Eric J. Lessard Jul 2022

Magnetic Resonance Systems Development For Point-Of-Care Mri Platforms, Eric J. Lessard

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Magnetic resonance imaging utilizes electromagnets to produce anatomical images in both clinical and research settings. In the race towards increasing performance head-optimized scanners have begun playing a significant role in providing high quality imaging of the head. However, they are implemented using smaller geometries and as such fail to allow entrance of the patient past their shoulders. This is overcome by designing asymmetric gradient coils which have their imaging region located towards one end of the gradient coil, as opposed to the geometric center, allowing brain imaging. There exists interest in compact configurations which allow imaging further into the cervical …

Optimization Of A Boundary Element Approach To Electromagnet Design With Application To A Host Of Current Problems In Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Chad T. Harris Aug 2013

Optimization Of A Boundary Element Approach To Electromagnet Design With Application To A Host Of Current Problems In Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Chad T. Harris

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has proven to be a valuable methodological approach in both basic research and clinical practice. However, significant hardware advances are still needed in order to further improve and extend the applications of the technique. The present dissertation predominantly addresses gradient and shim coil design (sub-systems of the MR system).

A design study to investigate gradient performance over a set of surface geometries ranging in curvature from planar to a full cylinder using the boundary element (BE) method is presented. The results of this study serve as a guide for future planar and pseudo-planar gradient systems for …

High Power Systems For Dynamic Field Control And Shielding In The Mr Environment, Dustin W. Haw Nov 2011

High Power Systems For Dynamic Field Control And Shielding In The Mr Environment, Dustin W. Haw

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis addresses several aspects of gradient and shim coil design and fabrication. New design techniques are coupled with experimental construction methods to expand small animal insert gradient and shim technology. The design techniques are also applied to other areas of magnetic resonance hardware.

A custom 2-axis gradient insert coil is designed and fabricated for the purpose of eddy current characterization. The construction tolerances were examined via bench top inductance measurements and eddy currents measurement inside a 7.0 T head-only MR system. A great deal of freedom is available when positioning shielding coils with respect to their corresponding primary coils …

Pushing The Boundaries In Gradient And Shim Design For Mri, Parisa Hudson Mar 2011

Pushing The Boundaries In Gradient And Shim Design For Mri, Parisa Hudson

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

High performance gradient and shim coils are highly interested for high-field magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy to correct for large B0 inhomogeneities created by the magnetic susceptibility differences between tissues, bone, and air. In chapter two, complete sets of high-performance gradient and shim coils are designed using two different methods: the minimum inductance and the minimum power target field methods. A quantitative comparison of shim performance in terms of merit of inductance, ML, and merit of resistance, MR, is made for shim coils designed using the minimum inductance and the minimum power design algorithms. The coils designed …
