Neutron Scattering Study Of The Iron Based Superconductors, Miaoyin Wang Aug 2013

Neutron Scattering Study Of The Iron Based Superconductors, Miaoyin Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

In most iron-based and copper-oxide superconductors, the Tc [superconducting critical temperature] gradually increases upon charge carrier doping or isovalent doping. In the under-doped regime of electron-doped BaFe2As2 [Barium Iron 2 Arsenic 2], the superconductivity appears before the complete suppression of AF [antiferromagnetic] long-range order, creating a SC-AF [superconducting-antiferromagnetic] coexisting area. The interplay between long-range magnetic order and superconductivity was studied using a triple-axis thermal neutron spectrometer under an in-plane magnetic field. The suppression of superconductivity and the enhancement of long-range AF order were discovered under 11 Tesla, suggesting the competing nature of these two phases and …

Numerical Study Of The Transition Metal Oxides And The Transport Properties Of Iron Pnictides, Shuhua Liang Jul 2012

Numerical Study Of The Transition Metal Oxides And The Transport Properties Of Iron Pnictides, Shuhua Liang

Doctoral Dissertations

Strongly correlated materials such as the manganites and iron pnictides are studied here with several computational techniques. Both types of materials contain transition metals. Thus, our computational models are based on the double exchange mechanism, the super exchange mechanism and the crystal field theory to describe the d electrons. In manganites, we focus on its multiferroic properties induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. In the BiFeO3 , we use classical Monte Carlo simulations to study the magnetic critical transition transition. In iron pnictides, we study the interplay between the Fermi surface orbital order and the ground state magnetic order.

Spin-Lattice Coupling In The Iron-Pnictide High-Temperature Superconductors, Daniel E Parshall Dec 2010

Spin-Lattice Coupling In The Iron-Pnictide High-Temperature Superconductors, Daniel E Parshall

Doctoral Dissertations

The recent discovery of the iron-pnictide superconductors has generated tremendous excitement, in part because there are many tantalizing similarities to the cuprate superconductors. As with the cuprates, it is strongly suspected that the spins contribute to superconductivity.

There seems to be a strong relationship between the lattice and magnetism in this system. Several authors have discussed the possibility of spin-phonon coupling, but direct experimental evidence has remained elusive.

This work discusses the relationship between the spins and the lattice in the $BaFe_{2}As_{2}$ family. We demonstrate the presence of negative thermal expansion in these materials, which is a strong indicator of …
