Evaluation Of Yttrium Stabilized Zirconium Thin Films With Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry, Jeff Serfass Dec 2022

Evaluation Of Yttrium Stabilized Zirconium Thin Films With Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry, Jeff Serfass

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Fuel Cells using solid oxides for the electrolyte material, or Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs), can operate at high temperatures and have many benefits when compared to other electrolyte material-based fuel cells. SOFCs can, however still have problems when operating at these high temperatures. (~1,000 degrees Celsius) At high temperatures, the SOFC electrolyte resistivity goes up making the ionic conductivity decrease and therefore a loss of performance. The inclusion of low level Yttria to Zirconium Oxide (the electrolyte material) has been known to help reduce the resistivity at high operating temperatures. In this study, a series of Yttria stabilized Zirconium …

Investigation Of Novel Electrolytes For Use In Lithium-Ion Batteries And Direct Methanol Fuel Cells, Kartik Pilar Feb 2018

Investigation Of Novel Electrolytes For Use In Lithium-Ion Batteries And Direct Methanol Fuel Cells, Kartik Pilar

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Energy storage and conversion plays a critical role in the efficient use of available energy and is crucial for the utilization of renewable energy sources. To achieve maximum efficiency of renewable energy sources, improvements to energy storage materials must be developed. In this work, novel electrolytes for secondary batteries and fuel cells have been studied using nuclear magnetic resonance and high pressure x-ray scattering techniques to form a better understanding of dynamic and structural properties of these materials. Ionic liquids have been studied due to their potential as a safer alternative to organic solvent-based electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries and composite …

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Studies Of Electrode And Electrolyte Materials For Li-Ion Batteries, Lisa Cirrincione Sep 2017

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Studies Of Electrode And Electrolyte Materials For Li-Ion Batteries, Lisa Cirrincione

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In this thesis, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopic techniques are used to study lithium electrode and electrolyte materials for advanced rechargeable lithium ion batteries. Three projects are described in this thesis. The first involves 23Na and 37Al static and magic angle spinning NMR studies of NaAlH4/C anode materials for advanced rechargeable batteries. The second project is a study of paramagnetic lithium transition-metal phosphate cathode materials for Li-ion batteries, where 7Li, and 31P single crystal NMR was used in order to obtain detailed information on the local electronic and magnetic environments. The third project investigates …

Modeling A Circuit That Represents An Electrolytic Solution At Different Concentrations, Daniel C. Miller Ii May 2016

Modeling A Circuit That Represents An Electrolytic Solution At Different Concentrations, Daniel C. Miller Ii

Senior Theses

Electrodes are often placed within bio samples in order to measure the electrical changes that occur within a system. In order to understand the information provided through the microelectrodes, this paper will describe an experiment to measure the capacitance and the resistance between two micro electrodes as an electrolyte becomes more concentrated. This resulted in a capacitance and a resistance that increased and decreased exponentially, respectively, as an electrolyte concentration increased logarithmically.
