The E12-14-012 experiment, performed in Jefferson Lab Hall A, has measured the (e,e′p) cross section in parallel kinematics using a natural titanium target. In this paper, we report the analysis of the dataset obtained in different kinematics for our solid natural titanium target. Data were obtained in a range of missing momentum and missing energy between 15 ≲ pm ≲ 250 MeV/c and 12 ≲ Em ≲ 80 MeV, respectively, and using an electron beam energy of 2.2 GeV. We measured the reduced cross section with ∼7% accuracy as a function of both missing momentum and missing energy. …

Background: The response of hadrons, the bound states of the strong force (QCD), to external probes can be described in two different, complementary frameworks: as direct interactions with their fundamental constituents, quarks and gluons, or alternatively as elastic or inelastic coherent scattering that leaves the hadrons in their ground state or in one of their excited (resonance) states. The former picture emerges most clearly in hard processes with high momentum transfer, where the hadron response can be described by the perturbative expansion of QCD, while at lower energy and momentum transfers, the resonant excitations of the hadrons dominate the cross …

Collider searches for dark sectors, new particles interacting only feebly with ordinary matter, have largely focused on identifying signatures of new mediators, leaving much of dark sector structures unexplored. In particular, the existence of dark matter bound states (darkonia) remains to be investigated. This possibility could arise in a simple model in which a dark photon (A') is light enough to generate an attractive force between dark fermions. We report herein a search for a JPC ¼ 1−− darkonium state, the ϒD, produced in the reaction e+e− → γϒD, ϒD → A …

We report on the measurement of spin density matrix elements of the Λ(1520) in the photoproduction reaction γp→Λ(1520)K+, via its subsequent decay to K−p. The measurement was performed as part of the GlueX experimental program in Hall D at Jefferson Laboratory using a linearly polarized photon beam with Eγ = 8.2 GeV–8.8 GeV. These are the first such measurements in this photon energy range. Results are presented in bins of momentum transfer squared, − (t − t0). We compare the results with a Reggeon exchange model and determine that natural exchange amplitudes are …

Background: Energetic quarks in nuclear deep-inelastic scattering propagate through the nuclear medium. Processes that are believed to occur inside nuclei include quark energy loss through medium-stimulated gluon bremsstrahlung and intranuclear interactions of forming hadrons. More data are required to gain a more complete understanding of these effects.
Purpose: To test the theoretical models of parton transport and hadron formation, we compared their predictions for the nuclear and kinematic dependence of pion production in nuclei.
Methods: We have measured charged-pion production in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering off D, C, Fe, and Pb using the CLAS detector and the CEBAF 5.014-GeV electron beam. …

A mass spectroscopy experiment with a pair of nearly identical high-resolution spectrometers and a tritium target was performed in Hall A at Jefferson Lab. Utilizing the (e,e′K+) reaction, enhancements, which may correspond to a possible Λnn resonance and a pair of ΣNN states, were observed with an energy resolution of about 1.21 MeV (σ), although greater statistics are needed to make definitive identifications. An experimentally measured Λnn state may provide a unique constraint in determining the Λn interaction, for which no scattering data exist. In addition, although bound A = 3 and 4 Σ hypernuclei have …

The present work deals with e+−e− pair production in the four-nucleon system. We first analyze the process as a purely electromagnetic one in the context of a state-of-the-art approach to nuclear strong-interaction dynamics and nuclear electromagnetic currents, derived from chiral effective field theory (χEFT). Next, we examine how the exchange of a hypothetical low-mass boson would impact the cross section for such a process. We consider several possibilities, that this boson is either a scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, or axial particle. The ab initio calculations use exact hyperspherical-harmonics methods to describe the bound state and low-energy spectrum of …

This work explores scattering amplitudes that couple two-particle systems via a single external current insertion, 2 + J → 2. Such amplitudes can provide structural information about the excited QCD spectrum. We derive an exact analytic representation for these reactions. From these amplitudes, we show how to rigorously define resonance and bound-state form factors. Furthermore, we explore the consequences of the narrow-width limit of the amplitudes as well as the role of the Ward-Takahashi identity for conserved vector currents. These results hold for any number of two-body channels with no intrinsic spin, and a current with arbitrary Lorentz structure and …

We perform a comprehensive new Monte Carlo analysis of high-energy lepton-lepton, lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron scattering data to simultaneously determine parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the proton and parton to hadron fragmentation functions (FFs). The analysis includes all available semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and single-inclusive e+e− annihilation data for pions, kaons and unidentified charged hadrons, which allows the flavor dependence of the fragmentation functions to be constrained. Employing a new multistep fitting strategy and more flexible parametrizations for both PDFs and FFs, we assess the impact of different datasets on sea quark densities and confirm the previously observed suppression …

Intrinsic Transverse Momentum And Evolution In Weighted Spin Asymmetries, Jian-Wei Qiu, Ted C. Rogers, Bowen Wang

The transverse momentum-dependent (TMD) and collinear higher twist theoretical factorization frameworks are the most frequently used approaches to describe spin-dependent hard cross sections weighted by and integrated over transverse momentum. Of particular interest is the contribution from small transverse momentum associated with the target bound state. In phenomenological applications, this contribution is often investigated using transverse momentum weighted integrals that sharply regulate the large transverse momentum contribution, for example, with Gaussian parametrizations. Since the result is a kind of hybrid of TMD and collinear (inclusive) treatments, it is important to establish if and how the formalisms are related in applications …

We have measured beam-spin asymmetries to extract the sinϕ moment ALUsinϕ from the hard exclusive e→p → e'nπ+ reaction above the resonance region, for the first time with nearly full coverage from forward to backward angles in the center of mass. The ALUsinϕ moment has been measured up to 6.6 GeV2 in -t, covering the kinematic regimes of generalized parton distributions (GPD) and baryon-to-meson transition distribution amplitudes (TDA) at the same time. The experimental results in very forward kinematics demonstrate the sensitivity to chiral-odd and chiral-even GPDs. In very backward kinematics where …
Double Inclusive Small-X Gluon Production And Their Azimuthal Correlations In A Biased Ensemble, Gary Kapilevich
Double Inclusive Small-X Gluon Production And Their Azimuthal Correlations In A Biased Ensemble, Gary Kapilevich
Publications and Research
We consider double gg → g production in the presence of a bias on the unintegrated gluon distribution of the colliding hadrons or nuclei. Such bias could be due to the selection of configurations with a greater number of gluons or higher mean transverse momentum squared or, more generally, due to a modified spectral shape of the gluon distribution in the hadrons. Hence, we consider reweighted functional averages over the stochastic ensemble of small-x gluons. We evaluate explicitly the double inclusive gluon transverse momentum spectrum in high-energy collisions, and their azimuthal correlations, for a few simple examples of biases.

We present a new measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |Vcb| from B0 → D*-ℓ vℓ decays, reconstructed with the full Belle data set of 711 fb−1 integrated luminosity. Two form factor parametrizations, originally conceived by the Caprini-Lellouch-Neubert (CLN) and the Boyd, Grinstein and Lebed (BGL) groups, are used to extract the product F(1)ηEW||Vcb| and the decay form factors, where F(1) is the normalization factor and ηEW is a small electroweak correction. In the CLN parametrization we find F(1)ηEW||Vcb|=(35.06 ± 0.15 ± 0.56) × 10−3, …

We report the first observation of the parity-violating gamma-ray asymmetry Anpγ in neutron-proton capture using polarized cold neutrons incident on a liquid parahydrogen target at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Anpγ isolates the ΔI = 1, 3S1 → 3P1 component of the weak nucleon-nucleon interaction, which is dominated by pion exchange and can be directly related to a single coupling constant in either the DDH meson exchange model or pionless effective field theory. We measured Anpγ = [−3.0 ± 1.4(stat )± 0.2(syst)] × 10−8 …

This paper reports the measurement of polarized and unpolarized cross sections for the ep → e′ p′ γ reaction, which is composed of deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) and Bethe-Heitler (BH) processes, at an electron beam energy of 5.88 GeV at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility using the Large Acceptance Spectrometer CLAS. The unpolarized cross sections and polarized cross section differences have been measured over broad kinematics, 0.10 < xB < 0.58, 1.0 < Q2 < 4.8GeV2, and 0.09 < −t < 2.00GeV2. The results are found to be consistent with previous CLAS data, and these new data are discussed in …

Exclusive photoproduction cross sections have been measured for the process γp → pπ0[e+e−(γ)] with the Dalitz decay final state using tagged photon energies in the range of Eγ = 1.275–5.425 GeV. The complete angular distribution of the final state π0, for the entire photon energy range up to large values of t and u, has been measured for the first time. The data obtained show that the cross section dσ/dt, at mid to large angles, decreases with energy as s−6.89±0.26. This is …

An improved measurement of the 3ΛH lifetime is presented. In this paper, the mesonic decay modes 3ΛH → 3He + π− and 3ΛH → d + p + π− are used to reconstruct the 3ΛH from Au+Au collision data collected by the STAR collaboration at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). A minimum χ2 estimation is used to determine the lifetime of τ = 142+24−21(stat.) ± 29(syst.) ps. This lifetime is about 50% shorter than the lifetime τ = 263 ± 2 ps of a free …

We consider the possibility of neutron-antineutron (n−n¯) conversion, in which the change of a neutron into an antineutron is mediated by an external source, as can occur in a scattering process. We develop the connections between n−n¯ conversion and n−n¯ oscillation, in which a neutron spontaneously transforms into an antineutron, noting that if n−n¯ oscillation occurs in a theory with baryon number minus lepton number (B-L) violation, then n−n¯ conversion can occur also. We show how an experimental limit on n−n¯ …

We report the first measurements of transverse single-spin asymmetries for inclusive jet and jet + π± production at midrapidity from transversely polarized proton-proton collisions at √s = 500 GeV. The data were collected in 2011 with the STAR detector sampled from 23 pb−1 integrated luminosity with an average beam polarization of 53%. Asymmetries are reported for jets with transverse momenta 6 < pT < 55 GeV/c and pseudorapidity |η| < 1. Presented are measurements of the inclusive-jet azimuthal transverse single-spin asymmetry, sensitive to twist-3 initial-state quark-gluon correlators; the Collins asymmetry, sensitive to quark transversity coupled to the polarized Collins fragmentation function; and the first measurement of the “Collins-like” asymmetry, sensitive to linearly polarized gluons. Within the present statistical precision, inclusive-jet and Collins-like asymmetries are small, with the latter allowing the first experimental constraints on gluon linear polarization in a polarized proton. At higher values of jet transverse momenta, we observe the first nonzero Collins asymmetries in polarized-proton collisions, with a statistical significance of greater than 5σ. The results span a range of x similar to results from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering but at much higher Q2. The Collins results enable tests of …

We search for CP violation in the charged charm meson decay D+→π+π0, based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 921 fb−1 collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB e+e− asymmetric-energy collider. The measured CP-violating asymmetry is [+2.31±1.24(stat)±0.23(syst)]%, which is consistent with the standard model prediction and has a significantly improved precision compared to previous results.

We report a new measurement of the exclusive e+e−→D(*)±D*∓ cross sections as a function of the center-of-mass energy from the D(*)±D*∓ threshold through √s=6.0 GeV, using the initial-state radiation technique. The analysis is based on a data sample collected with the Belle detector with an integrated luminosity of 951 fb−1. The accuracy of the cross section measurement is increased by a factor of 2 over the first Belle study. We perform the first angular analysis of the e+e−→D*±D*∓process and decompose this exclusive cross section into three components corresponding to the D∗helicities.
