We measured the g1 spin structure function of the deuteron at low Q2, where QCD can be approximated with chiral perturbation theory (χPT). The data cover the resonance region, up to an invariant mass of W ≈ 1.9  GeV. The generalized Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum, the moment Γd1 and the spin polarizability γ0d are precisely determined down to a minimum Q2 of 0.02  GeV2 for the first time, about 2.5 times lower than that of previous data. We compare them to several χPT calculations and models. These results are the first …

Measurements of the linearly-polarized photon beam asymmetry Σ for photoproduction from the proton of η and η ′ mesons are reported. A linearly-polarized tagged photon beam produced by coherent bremsstrahlung was incident on a cryogenic hydrogen target within the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer. Results are presented for the γ p → η p reaction for incident photon energies from 1.070 to 1.876 GeV, and from 1.516 to 1.836 GeV for the γ p → η ′ p reaction. For γ p → η p , the data reported here considerably extend the range of measurements to higher energies, and are …

Photon beam asymmetry Σ measurements for ω photoproduction in the reaction γ → p → ω p are reported for photon energies from 1.152 to 1.876 GeV. Data were taken using a linearly-polarized tagged photon beam, a cryogenic hydrogen target, and the CLAS spectrometer in Hall B at Jefferson Lab. The measurements obtained markedly increase the size of the database for this observable, extend coverage to higher energies, and resolve discrepancies in previously published data. Comparisons of these new results with predictions from a chiral-quark-based model and from a dynamical coupled-channels model indicate the importance of interferences between t-channel meson …

We report the first measurement of the target single-spin asymmetry, Ay, in quasielastic scattering from the inclusive reaction 3He(e,e′ ) on a 3He gas target polarized normal to the lepton scattering plane. Assuming time-reversal invariance, this asymmetry is strictly zero for one-photon exchange. A nonzero Ay can arise from the interference between the one- and two-photon exchange processes which is sensitive to the details of the substructure of the nucleon. An experiment recently completed at Jefferson Lab yielded asymmetries with high statistical precision at Q2=0.13, 0.46, and …

We report a new measurement of the midrapidity inclusive jet longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, ALL, in polarized pp collisions at center-of-mass energy √s=200  GeV. The STAR data place stringent constraints on polarized parton distribution functions extracted at next-to-leading order from global analyses of inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (DIS), semi-inclusive DIS, and RHIC pp data. The measured asymmetries provide evidence at the 3σ level for positive gluon polarization in the Bjorken-x region x>0.05.

We present measurements of π and π+ elliptic flow, v2, at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at √SNN=200, 62.4, 39, 27, 19.6, 11.5, and 7.7 GeV, as a function of event-by-event charge asymmetry, Ach, based on data from the STAR experiment at RHIC. We find that π (π+) elliptic flow linearly increases (decreases) with charge asymmetry for most centrality bins at √SNN=27  GeV and higher. At √SNN=200  GeV, the slope of the difference of v2 between π and π+ …

A measurement of the electroproduction of photons off protons in the deeply inelastic regime was performed at Jefferson Lab using a nearly 6 GeV electron beam, a longitudinally polarized proton target, and the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer. Target-spin asymmetries for e p → e'p'ɣ events, which arise from the interference of the deeply virtual Compton scattering and the Bethe-Heitler processes, were extracted over the widest kinematics in Q2, xB, t, and ɸ, for 166 four-dimensional bins. In the framework of generalized parton distributions, at leading twist the t dependence of these asymmetries provides insight into …

An experiment to measure single-spin asymmetries of semi-inclusive production of charged pions in deep-inelastic scattering on a transversely polarized 3He target was performed at Jefferson Laboratory in the kinematic region of 0.16<x<0.35 and 1.42<2.7 GeV2 Pretzelosity asymmetries on 3He, which are expressed as the convolution of the h1T transverse-momentum-dependent distribution functions and the Collins fragmentation functions in the leading order, were measured for the first time. Under the effective polarization approximation, we extracted the corresponding neutron asymmetries from the measured 3He asymmetries and cross-section ratios between the proton and 3He. Our results show that both …

Jet-medium interactions are studied via a multihadron correlation technique ( called "2 + 1"), where a pair of back-to-back hadron triggers with large transverse momentum is used as a proxy for a di-jet. This work extends the previous analysis for nearly symmetric trigger pairs with the highest momentum threshold of trigger hadron of 5 GeV/c with the new calorimeter-based triggers with energy thresholds of up to 10 GeV and above. The distributions of associated hadrons are studied in terms of correlation shapes and per-trigger yields on each trigger side. In contrast with di-hadron correlation results with single triggers, the associated …

The tt̅ charge asymmetry is measured in events containing a charged lepton (electron or muon) and at least four jets, one of which is identified as originating from b-quark hadronization. The analyzed data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb−1 collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. An inclusive and three differential measurements of the tt̅ charge asymmetry as a function of rapidity, transverse momentum, and invariant mass of the tt̅ system are presented. The measured inclusive tt̅ charge asymmetry is AC = 0.004 ± 0.010 (stat.) ± 0.011 (syst.). This result and the three …

Analytical Characterization Of Oscillon Energy And Lifetime, Marcelo Gleiser, David Sicilia Jul 2008

Analytical Characterization Of Oscillon Energy And Lifetime, Marcelo Gleiser, David Sicilia

Dartmouth Scholarship

We develop an analytical procedure to compute all relevant physical properties of scalar field oscillons in models with quartic polynomial potentials: energy, radius, frequency, core amplitude, and lifetime. We compare our predictions to numerical simulations of models with symmetric and asymmetric double-well potentials in three spatial dimensions, obtaining excellent agreement. We also explain why oscillons have not been seen to decay in two spatial dimensions.

The beam-spin asymmetries in the hard exclusive electroproduction of photons on the proton (ep→epγ ) were measured over a wide kinematic range and with high statistical accuracy. These asymmetries result from the interference of the Bethe-Heitler process and of deeply virtual Compton scattering. Over the whole kinematic range (xB from 0.11 to 0.58, Q2 from 1 to 4.8  GeV2, −t from 0.09 to 1.8  GeV2), the azimuthal dependence of the asymmetries is compatible with expectations from leading-twist dominance, A ≃ asinϕ/(1+ccosϕ). This extensive set of data can thus be used to …

Dynamical Control Of Qubit Coherence: Random Versus Deterministic Schemes, Lea F. Santos, Lorenza Viola Dec 2005

Dynamical Control Of Qubit Coherence: Random Versus Deterministic Schemes, Lea F. Santos, Lorenza Viola

Dartmouth Scholarship

We reexamine the problem of switching off unwanted phase evolution and decoherence in a single two-state quantum system in the light of recent results on random dynamical decoupling methods [L. Viola and E. Knill, Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 060502 (2005)]. A systematic comparison with standard cyclic decoupling is effected for a variety of dynamical regimes, including the case of both semiclassical and fully quantum decoherence models. In particular, exact analytical expressions are derived for randomized control of decoherence from a bosonic environment. We investigate quantitatively control protocols based on purely deterministic, purely random, as well as hybrid design, and …

Nearly complete angular distributions of the two-body deuteron photodisintegration differential cross section have been measured using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer detector and the tagged photon beam at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The data cover photon energies between 0.5 and 3.0 GeV and center-of-mass proton scattering angles 10°–160°. The data show a persistent forward-backward angle asymmetry over the explored energy range, and are well described by the nonperturbative quark gluon string model.

Physics Faculty Publications

Differential cross sections for γp→ηp have been measured with tagged real photons for incident photon energies from 0.75 to 1.95 GeV. Mesons were identified by missing mass reconstruction using kinematical information for protons scattered in the production process. The data provide the first extensive angular distribution measurements for the process above W = 1.75  GeV. Comparison with preliminary results from a constituent quark model support the suggestion that a third S11 resonance with mass ∼1.8  GeV couples to the ηN channel.

Distinguishing A Charged Higgs Signal From A Heavy Wr Signal, David I. Kaiser Mar 1993

Distinguishing A Charged Higgs Signal From A Heavy Wr Signal, David I. Kaiser

Dartmouth Scholarship

It is shown that non-Standard Model bosons should obey an observable asymmetry in their decays to taus. This asymmetry enables a distinction to be made between charged Higgsboson signalsand heavy right-handed Wboson signals,by reconstructing the orientation of the z with respect to the beam axis.
