Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report on a search for Bs0→µ+µ- and Bd0→µ+µ- decays in pρ̅ collisions at √8=1.96 TeV using 364 pb-1 of data collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. After applying all selection requirements, we observe no candidates inside the Bs0 or Bd0 mass windows. The resulting upper limits on the branching fractions are Ɓ (Bs0→µ+µ-)<1.5×10-7 and Ɓ (Bd0→µ+µ-)<3.9×10-8 at 90% confidence level.

Search For New Physics Using High-Mass Tau Pairs From 1.96 Tev Pp̅ Collisions, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present the results of a search for anomalous resonant production of tau lepton pairs with large invariant mass, the first such search using the CDF II Detector in Run II of the Tevatron pp̅ collider. Such anomalous production could arise from various new physics processes. In a data sample corresponding to 195 pb-1 of integrated luminosity we predict 2.8±0.5 events from standard model background processes and observe 4. We use this result to set limits on the production of heavy scalar and vector particles decaying to tau lepton pairs.

Measurement Of Ɓ(T→Wb)/ Ɓ(T→Wb) At The Collider Detector At Fermilab, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present a measurement of the ratio of top-quark branching fractions R=Ɓ (t→Wb)/ Ɓ(t→Wq), where q can be a b, s, or a d quark, using lepton-plus-jets and dilepton data sets with an integrated luminosity of ~162 pb-1 collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab during Run II of the Tevatron. The measurement is derived from the relative numbers of t t̅ events with different multiplicity of identified secondary vertices. We set a lower limit of R>0.61 at 95% confidence level.

Search For Long-Lived Doubly Charged Higgs Bosons In Pp̅ Collisions At √2=1.96 Tev, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present a search for long-lived doubly charged Higgs bosons (H±±), with signatures of high ionization energy loss and muonlike penetration. We use 292 pb-1 of data collected in pp̅ collisions at √2=1.96 TeV by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. Observing no evidence of long-lived doubly charged particle production, we exclude HL±± and HR±± bosons with masses below 133 GeV/c2 and 109 GeV/c2, respectively. In the degenerate case we exclude H±± mass below 146 GeV/c2. All limits are quoted at …

Measurement Of The T T̅ Production Cross Section In P P̅ Collisions At Sqrt(S)=1.96 Tev Using Lepton Plus Jets Events With Semileptonic B Decays To Muons, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present a measurement of the t[overline t] production cross section using 194 pb-1 of CDF II data using events with a high transverse momentum electron or muon, three or more jets, and missing transverse energy. The measurement assumes 100% t→Wb branching fraction. Events consistent with tt̅ decay are found by identifying jets containing heavy-flavor semileptonic decays to muons. The dominant backgrounds are evaluated directly from the data. Based on 20 candidate events and an expected background of 9.5±1.1 events, we measure a production cross section of 5.3±3.3-1.0+1.3 pb, in agreement with the standard model.

Search For Higgs Bosons Decaying Into B B̅ And Produced In Association With A Vector Boson In P P̅ Collisions At √S =1.8 Tev, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present a new search for H0V production, where H0 is a scalar Higgs boson decaying into b b̅ with branching ratio β, and V is a Z0 boson decaying into e+e-, µ+µ-, or νν̅. This search is then combined with previous searches for H0V where V is a W± boson or a hadronically decaying Z0. The data sample consists of 106±4 pb-1 of p p̅ collisions at √s=1.8 TeV accumulated by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Observing no evidence of a …

Measurement Of The Cross Section For Prompt Diphoton Production In Pp̅ Collisions At √S =1.96 Tev, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report a measurement of the rate of prompt diphoton production in pp̅ collisions at √s =1.96 TeV using a data sample of 207 pb-1 collected with the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab. The background from nonprompt sources is determined using a statistical method based on differences in the electromagnetic showers. The cross section is measured as a function of the diphoton mass, the transverse momentum of the diphoton system, and the azimuthal angle between the two photons and is found to be consistent with perturbative QCD predictions.

Search For Anomalous Kinematics In Tt̅ Dilepton Events At Cdf Ii, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report on a search for anomalous kinematics of tt̅ dilepton events in pp̅ collisions at √s =1.96 TeV using 193 pb-1 of data collected with the CDF II detector. We developed a new a priori technique designed to isolate the subset in a data sample revealing the largest deviation from standard model (SM) expectations and to quantify the significance of this departure. In the four-variable space considered, no particular subset shows a significant discrepancy, and we find that the probability of obtaining a data sample less consistent with the SM than what is observed is 1.0%–4.5%.

Search For Scalar Leptoquark Pairs Decaying To Νν̅ Qq̅ In Pp̅ Collisions At √S=1.96 Tev, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report on a search for the pair production of scalar leptoquarks (LQ), using 191 pb-1 of proton-antiproton collision data recorded by the CDF experiment during Run II of the Tevatron. The leptoquarks are sought via their decay into a neutrino and quark yielding missing transverse energy and several jets of large transverse energy. No evidence for LQ production is observed, and limits are set on sigma(pp̅→LQ L̅Q̅X→ νν̅qq̅X). Using a next-to-leading order theoretical prediction of the cross section for LQ production, we exclude first-generation LQ in the mass interval 78 to 117 GeV/c2 …

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report the first largely model independent measurement of charged particle multiplicities in quark and gluon jets, Nq and Ng, produced at the Fermilab Tevatron in pp̅ collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV and recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The measurements are made for jets with average energies of 41 and 53 GeV by counting charged particle tracks in cones with opening angles of θ c=0.28, 0.36, and 0.47 rad around the jet axis. The corresponding jet hardness Q=Ejet θ c varies in the range from 12 to 25 GeV. At …

Measurements Of Bottom-Antibottom Azimuthal Production Correlations In Proton-Antiproton Collisions At √S =1.8 Tev, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration May 2005

Measurements Of Bottom-Antibottom Azimuthal Production Correlations In Proton-Antiproton Collisions At √S =1.8 Tev, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We have measured the azimuthal angular correlation of b[overline b] production, using 86.5 pb-1 of data collected by Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) in pp̅ collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV during 1994–1995. In high-energy pp̅ collisions, such as at the Tevatron, bb̅ production can be schematically categorized into three mechanisms. The leading-order (LO) process is "flavor creation," where both bb and quarks substantially participate in the hard scattering and result in a distinct back-to-back signal in final state. The "flavor excitation" and the "gluon splitting" processes, which appear at next-leading-order (NLO), are known to make a comparable contribution to …

Measurement Of The Tt̅ Production Cross Section In Pp̅ Collisions At √S =1.96 Tev Using Kinematic Fitting Of B-Tagged Lepton+Jet Events, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report a measurement of the tt̅ production cross section using the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The data consist of events with an energetic electron or muon, missing transverse energy, and three or more hadronic jets, at least one of which is identified as a b-quark jet by reconstructing a secondary vertex. The background fraction is determined from a fit of the transverse energy of the leading jet. Using 162±10 pb-1 of data, the total cross section is found to be 6.0±1.6(stat.)±1.2(syst.) pb, which is consistent with the standard model prediction.

Measurement Of The Moments Of The Hadronic Invariant Mass Distribution In Semileptonic B Decays, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

Using 180 pb-1 of data collected with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron, we measure the first two moments of the hadronic invariant mass-squared distribution in charmed semileptonic B decays. From these we determine the nonperturbative Heavy Quark Effective Theory parameters Λ and λ1 used to relate the B meson semileptonic branching ratio to the CKM matrix element |Vcb|. For a minimum lepton momentum of 0.7 GeV/c in the B rest frame we measure the first two moments of the D**→D(*) π component to be D**2>=(5.83±0.16stat±0.08syst) GeV …

Measurement Of The W Boson Polarization In Top Decay At Cdf At Sqrt(S)=1.8 Tev, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

The polarization of the W boson in t→Wb decay is unambiguously predicted by the standard model of electroweak interactions and is a powerful test of our understanding of the tWb vertex. We measure this polarization from the invariant mass of the b quark from t→Wb and the lepton from W whose momenta measure the W decay angle and direction of motion, respectively. In this paper we present a measurement of the decay rate (fv+A) of the W produced from the decay of the top quark in the hypothesis of V+A structure of the tWb vertex. …

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present the results of a search for anomalous production of diphoton events with large missing transverse energy using the Collider Detector at Fermilab. In 202 pb-1 of pp̅ collisions at √s =1.96 TeV we observe no candidate events, with an expected standard model background of 0.27±0.07(stat)±0.10(syst) events. The results exclude a lightest chargino of mass less than 167 GeV/c2, and lightest neutralino of mass less than 93 GeV/c2 at 95% C.L. in a gauge-mediated supersymmetry-breaking model with a light gravitino.

Measurement Of W Γ And Z Γ Production In Pp̅ Collisions At √S =1.96 Tev, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

The standard model predictions for W γ and Z γ production are tested using an integrated luminosity of 200 pb-1 of pp̅ collision data collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The cross sections are measured by selecting leptonic decays of the W and Z bosons, and photons with transverse energy ET>7 GeV that are well separated from leptons. The production cross sections and kinematic distributions for the W γ and Zγ data are compared to SM predictions.

Comparison Of Three-Jet Events In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 1.8 Tev To Predictions From A Next-To-Leading Order Qcd Calculation, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

The properties of three-jet events with total transverse energy greater than 320 GeV and individual jet energy greater than 20 GeV have been analyzed and compared to absolute predictions from a next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD calculation. These data, of integrated luminosity 86 pb-1, were recorded by the CDF Experiment for pp̅ collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV. This study tests a model of higher order QCD processes that result in gluon emission and may give some indication of the magnitude of the contribution of processes higher than NLO. The total cross section is measured to be 466±3(stat.) …
