As our daily use of electronics and electronic technology grows, so does the societal need for sustainable, renewable and portable electrical power. To this end, materials of interest in the electrochemical world are needed to advance the frontier of battery science and energy storage technologies so that a safer, more efficient and reliable electrical future can be realized. In this thesis, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopic techniques are used to study lithium electrode and electrolyte materials for advanced rechargeable lithium ion batteries. Three projects are described in this thesis. The first involves 23Na and 37Al static and magic angle spinning NMR studies of NaAlH4/C anode materials for advanced rechargeable batteries. The second project is a study of paramagnetic lithium transition-metal phosphate cathode materials for Li-ion batteries, where 7Li, and 31P single crystal NMR was used in order to obtain detailed information on the local electronic and magnetic environments. In this thesis, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopic techniques are used to study lithium and sodium electrode materials for advanced rechargeable batteries. Three projects are described in this thesis. The first two projects involve 6Li, 7Li and 31P NMR studies of two cathode materials for advanced rechargeable batteries. The third project is a study of sodium titanate cathode materials for Na-ion batteries, where 1H, 7Li, and 23Na static and magic angle spinning NMR were used in order to obtain detailed information on the chemical environments.
