Model Checks For Two-Sample Location-Scale, Atefeh Javidialsaadi
Model Checks For Two-Sample Location-Scale, Atefeh Javidialsaadi
Dissertations
Two-sample location-scale refers to a model that permits a pair of standardized random variables to have a common distribution. This means that if X1 and X2 are two random variables with means µ1 and µ2 and standard deviations ?1 and ?2, then (X1 - µ1)/?1 and (X2 - µ2)/?2 have some common unspecified standard or base distribution F0. Function-based hypothesis testing for these models refers to formal tests that would help determine whether or not two samples may have come from some location-scale …
Dependent Censoring In Survival Analysis, Zhongcheng Lin
Dependent Censoring In Survival Analysis, Zhongcheng Lin
Dissertations
This dissertation mainly consists of two parts. In the first part, some properties of bivariate Archimedean Copulas formed by two time-to-event random variables are discussed under the setting of left censoring, where these two variables are subject to one left-censored independent variable respectively. Some distributional results for their joint cdf under different censoring patterns are presented. Those results are expected to be useful in both model fitting and checking procedures for Archimedean copula models with bivariate left-censored data. As an application of the theoretical results that are obtained, a moment estimator of the dependence parameter in Archimedean copula models is …
Intracavity Phase Interferometry Based Fiber Sensors, Luke Jameson Horstman
Intracavity Phase Interferometry Based Fiber Sensors, Luke Jameson Horstman
Optical Science and Engineering ETDs
Intracavity Phase Interferometry (IPI) is a detection technique that exploits the inherent sensitivity of a laser's frequency to the parameters of its cavity. Intracavity interferometry is orders of magnitude more sensitive than its extracavity alternatives. This dissertation improves on previous free-space proof-of-concept designs. By implementing the technique in fiber optics, using optical parametric oscillation, and investigating non-Hermitian quantum mechanics and dispersion tailoring enhancement techniques, IPI has become more applicable and sensitive. Ring and linear IPI configurations were realized in this work, both operating as bidirectional fiber optical parametric oscillators. The benefit of using externally pumped synchronous optical parametric oscillation is …
Entropic Density Functional Theory : Entropic Inference And The Equilibrium State Of Inhomogeneous Fluids, Ahmad Yousefi
Entropic Density Functional Theory : Entropic Inference And The Equilibrium State Of Inhomogeneous Fluids, Ahmad Yousefi
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
A unified formulation of the density functional theory is constructed on the foundations of entropic inference in both the classical and the quantum regimes. The theory is introduced as an application of entropic inference for inhomogeneous fluids in thermal equilibrium. It is shown that entropic inference reproduces the variational principle of DFT when informationabout expected density of particles is imposed. In the classical regime, this process introduces a family of trial density-parametrized probability distributions, and consequently a trial entropy, from which the preferred one is found using the method of Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt). In the quantum regime, similarly, the process …
Swarming Oscillators With Time-Delayed Interactions, Nicholas S. Blum
Swarming Oscillators With Time-Delayed Interactions, Nicholas S. Blum
Physics
We investigate the role of delay in the collective dynamics of particles that swarm in space and possess an internal oscillatory degree of freedom, called swarmalators. Swarmalators were introduced recently by O’Keeffe, Hong, and Strogatz in Nature Communications 8, 1504 (2017). The addition of a time delay into the system of swarmalators was motivated by the biology of early embryonic development. This delay leads to a rich phenomenology, which includes two new collective states, which we call "semi-static crystal" and "boiling". In the semi-static crystal state, all particles in a cluster undergo decaying radial oscillations completely in phase with one …
Towards Long Term Colloid Suspension In A Vertically Rotated System., Md Mahmudur Rahman
Towards Long Term Colloid Suspension In A Vertically Rotated System., Md Mahmudur Rahman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Within a colloidal suspension gravity may compromise the observation of governing physical interactions, especially those that are weak and/or take significant time to develop. Conducting the experiment in a long-term microgravity environment is a viable option to negate gravitational effects, though significant resources are required to do so. While it may not be possible to simulate long-term microgravity terrestrially, particles can resist quick sedimentation in a confined suspension system rotating vertically with appropriate rotation speed. The goal of the investigation is to demonstrate the existence of long-term particle suspension regime for a certain colloidal suspension while characterizing colloidal behavior due …
Pattern Formation And Phase Transition Of Connectivity In Two Dimensions, Arman Mohseni Kabir
Pattern Formation And Phase Transition Of Connectivity In Two Dimensions, Arman Mohseni Kabir
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation is devoted to the study and analysis of different types of emergent behavior in physical systems. Emergence is a phenomenon that has fascinated researchers from various fields of science and engineering. From the emergence of global pandemics to the formation of reaction-diffusion patterns, the main feature that connects all these diverse systems is the appearance of a complex global structure as a result of collective interactions of simple underlying components. This dissertation will focus on two types of emergence in physical systems: emergence of long-range connectivity in networks and emergence and analysis of complex patterns. The most prominent …
Wave Excitation And Dynamics In Disordered Systems, Yiming Huang
Wave Excitation And Dynamics In Disordered Systems, Yiming Huang
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis presents studies of the field and energy excited in disordered systems as well as the dynamics of scattering.
Dynamic and steady state aspects of wave propagation are deeply connected in lossless open systems in which the scattering matrix is unitary. There is then an equivalence among the energy excited within the medium through all channels, the Wigner time delay, which is the sum of dwell times in all channels coupled to the medium, and the density of states. But these equivalences fall away in the presence of material loss or gain. In this paper, we use microwave measurements, …
Nonlinear Optical Studies Of Interfacial Ferroelectricity And Strain Distribution In Perovskite Dielectric Films, Tony Le
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Dielectric and ferroelectric perovskite films have been model energy storage structures for their low-dielectric loss, extremely high charge-discharge speed, and good temperature stability, yet there is still much to understand about the material’s limitations. This dissertation presents a detailed understanding of the strain-induced ferroelectricity at the boundary between a strontium titanate (SrTiO3) ultrathin film epitaxially grown on a germanium (Ge) substrate through optical second harmonic generation (SHG), and the polydomain distribution in the Zr-doped BaTiO3 (BZT) films by time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy.
First, SHG measurements were performed to reveal interfacial ferroelectricity in the epitaxial SrTiO3/Ge (100) …
An Experimental Study Of Lipid-Membrane Based Structure Formation And Development Of A Responsive System, Rui Cao
Doctoral Dissertations
This thesis shows how controlling adhesive interactions among lipid bilayer vesicles and surrounding polymers or particles leads to formation of new mesoscopic and macroscopic structures. The vesicle-gel reported could find application as a closed-cell, 99% water solid platform for releasing cargo in response to a stimulus, either by tuning membrane permeability or by disruption of the vesicles.
Analysis Of Container Throughput: Demand Forecast And Seaport Competitiveness Assessment, Hussain Talat Sulaimani
Analysis Of Container Throughput: Demand Forecast And Seaport Competitiveness Assessment, Hussain Talat Sulaimani
Dissertations
Seaports play a crucial role in the container industry, where they act as important nodes in the transport chain to facilitate international trade. In a competitive market, port capacity plays a significant role in defining its competitive position to attract demand and avoid congestion. Failing to provide suitable capacity results in the loss of market share. Therefore, port decision-makers face the challenge of maintaining and developing suitable port facilities to provide efficient services to port users. One of the aspects that decision-makers consider in the planning and development process is analyzing container demand. The analysis of container demand can be …
Roughening Interfaces In Spatial Population Dynamics, Clarisa E. Castillo
Roughening Interfaces In Spatial Population Dynamics, Clarisa E. Castillo
Doctoral Dissertations
The spatial structure and geometry of biological systems can have a strong effect on that system’s evolutionary dynamics. In particular, spatially structured populations may invade one another, giving rise to invasion fronts that may exhibit qualitatively different evolutionary dynamics in different dimensions or geometric configurations. For examples of invasion fronts arising in nature, one might think of a thin layer of bacteria cells growing on a Petri dish, an animal species expanding into new territory, or a cancerous tumor growing into and competing with the surrounding healthy tissue. Perhaps the most well-studied class of invasion fronts in population genetics is …

Characterization Of Lamellar Liquid Crystal Emulsifiers In Topical Creams Containing A Novel Solvent, Melinda Joanna Sutton
MSU Graduate Theses
Diethylene glycol monoethyl ether (DEGEE) is a promising solvent component in topical cream formulations due to its superior solubilizing abilities with certain active pharmaceutical ingredients. One of the goals of this study is to characterize the effects of pH on the physical and chemical stabilities of topical cream formulations containing particularly high concentrations of DEGEE by characterizing a full topical pH profile of 3.5 – 9.0. The second goal is to evaluate the presence, amount, and characteristics of lyotropic liquid crystals (LLCs), molecularly structured in a lamellar phase, in a model cream emulsion utilizing polarized light microscopy (PLM). The presence …
Machine Learning Representations For Optimization Of Process Systems, Logan Watts
Machine Learning Representations For Optimization Of Process Systems, Logan Watts
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The optimal operation of chemical processes provides the foundation for optimization problems to determine the most effective way to operate or design a given process. Chemical processes can be represented as nonlinear systems of equations with decision variables, resulting in a problem that can be solved through nonlinear solvers. The downfalls of nonlinear solvers create the need for improved methods of finding globally optimal solutions to the design or operation of a chemical process. The project will seek to evaluate the use of artificial neural networks to approximate nonlinear systems of equations for the purpose of optimizing chemical processes. The …

Study Of Static And Dynamical Properties Of Complex Antiferroelectrics Materials, Kinnary Yogeshbhai Patel
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The aim of this dissertation is the investigation of the static and dynamical properties of the complex antiferroelectric materials using Effective Hamiltonian method and First principles calculations. In chapter 3, a novel elemental interatomic coupling in perovskite materials which bilinearly couples the antiferroelectric displacements of cations with the rotations of the oxygen octahedra. This new coupling explains a very complex crystal structure of prototypical antiferroelectric PbZrO3. My explanation provides a unified description of many other complex antipolar crystal structures in variety of perovskite materials, including the occurrence of incommensurate phases in some of them. In chapter 4, results and analysis …
Design And Control Of A Peristaltic Pump To Simulate Left Atrial Pressure In A Conductive Silicone Model, Jeremy Collins
Design And Control Of A Peristaltic Pump To Simulate Left Atrial Pressure In A Conductive Silicone Model, Jeremy Collins
Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
According to the CDC, atrial fibrillation is responsible for more than 454,000 hospitalizations and approximately 158,000 deaths per year. A common treatment for atrial fibrillation is catheter ablation, a process in which a long flexible tube is guided through the femoral artery and to the source of arrhythmia in the heart, where it measures the electrical potential at various locations and converts problematic heart tissue to scar tissue via ablation. This paper details the design and control of a low-cost ($400) peristaltic pump system using repetitive control to replicate blood pressure in the left atrium in a conductive silicone model …
Structural Origin Of Thermal, Mechanical Properties And Morphological Behaviors Of Semiconducting Polymers, Song Zhang
Structural Origin Of Thermal, Mechanical Properties And Morphological Behaviors Of Semiconducting Polymers, Song Zhang
Dissertations
The past decades have witnessed a surging exploration of semiconducting polymers for the application of wearable and flexible organic electronic devices. Despite the increased amounts of molecular engineered polymers and their much-improved electrical performances, a systematic study of the structure-thermal/mechanical property-morphology relationship of semiconducting polymers is still less investigated.
To understand the thin-film mechanical properties, a pseudo-free standing tensile tester was self-built and utilized to obtain their real-time stress-strain behaviors through uniaxial stretching on top of the water surface. It also enables the first quantitative measurement of fracture energy on ultrathin polymeric films. Through multiple mechanical testing methods (i.e., strain-rate …
The Structure Function Relationship Of Disordered Networks Using Young's Modulus And Floppy Modes, Melinda Grace Tajnai
The Structure Function Relationship Of Disordered Networks Using Young's Modulus And Floppy Modes, Melinda Grace Tajnai
Physics
Disordered networks may have the ability to store information that can be retrieved using a Young’s modulus measurement. The effect of the number of floppy modes a network has on the value of this Young’s modulus measurement is unknown. This experiment uses 28 networks consisting of 3D printed edges in a sliding frame to determine how the Young’s modulus of a network is related to the number of floppy modes.
Exponential Random Graphs And A Generalization Of Parking Functions, Ryan Demuse
Exponential Random Graphs And A Generalization Of Parking Functions, Ryan Demuse
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Random graphs are a powerful tool in the analysis of modern networks. Exponential random graph models provide a framework that allows one to encode desirable subgraph features directly into the probability measure. Using the theory of graph limits pioneered by Borgs et. al. as a foundation, we build upon the work of Chatterjee & Diaconis and Radin & Yin. We add complexity to the previously studied models by considering exponential random graph models with edge-weights coming from a generic distribution satisfying mild assumptions. In particular, we show that a large family of two-parameter, edge-weighted exponential random graphs display a phase …
The Entropic Dynamics Of Relativistic Quantum Fields In Curved Space-Time, Selman Ipek
The Entropic Dynamics Of Relativistic Quantum Fields In Curved Space-Time, Selman Ipek
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
It has often been the case in history that the laws of physics have been used as the framework for understanding and implementing information processing. The tacit assumption is that the laws of physics are fundamental and that the notion of information is derived from these laws. Here we take the opposite view: the laws of physics are an application of the rules for processing information. The inferential framework of entropic dynamics (ED) has previously been developed by A. Caticha for the purposes of understanding and deriving quantum theory, in much the same way that E.T. Jaynes used the MaxEnt …
Establishing Independent Tunability Of The Mechanical And Transport Properties Of Polymer Gels, Lucas Rankin
Establishing Independent Tunability Of The Mechanical And Transport Properties Of Polymer Gels, Lucas Rankin
Master’s Theses
Polymer gels can be used in the fabrication of materials for filtering liquid and gaseous media, solid-state electrolytes, and transdermal medical patches. This diverse range of applications primarily relies on the transport and mechanical properties of polymer gels. Both sets of properties have shown excellent tunability, but typically in a coupled fashion. Establishing the independent tunability of the transport and mechanical properties of polymer gels (using simple, cost-effective methods) is paramount if polymer gels are to be used to their full potential. Specifically, block copolymer gels self-assemble into organized nanoscale networks within the gel solvent, which allows for facile control …
Quantifying Confinement Of Chain Dynamics For Chains Tethered To Self-Assembling Crystalline Nanodomains Using Neutron Spin Echo Spectroscopy, Logan Benninghoff
Quantifying Confinement Of Chain Dynamics For Chains Tethered To Self-Assembling Crystalline Nanodomains Using Neutron Spin Echo Spectroscopy, Logan Benninghoff
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Polyisobutylene (PIB) rubbers can be reinforced with crystalline β-alanine nanodomains. Progress has been made in understanding the morphology of the nanodomains, but the dynamics of the PIB molecule chains attached to the surface of the nanodomains and in the matrix are not well understood. It is possible to observe the motion of these PIB chains using Neutron Spin Echo (NSE) experiments, since the experimental technique can give data for smaller timescales. Data collection for reinforced rubber samples has already been performed, but the data still need to be analyzed. For my honors project I will be comparing the data to …
