Ablation of titanium wafers in air is accomplished with 60 µs pulsed, 2.94 µm laser radiation. Titanium monoxide spectra are measured in the wavelength range of 500 nm to 750 nm, and molecular signatures include bands of the C3 Δ → X3 Δ α, B3 Π → X3 Δ γ', and A3 Φ → X3 Δ γ transitions. The spatially and temporally averaged spectra appear to be in qualitative agreement with previous temporally resolved studies that employed shorter wavelengths and shorter pulse durations than utilized in this work. The background signals in the current study are possibly due to particulate …

Using a simultaneous fitting technique to extract nonlinear absorption coefficients from data at two pulse widths, we measure two-photon and free-carrier absorption coefficients for Ge and GaSb at 2.05 and 2.5 μm for the first time. Results agreed well with published theory. Single-shot damage thresholds were also measured at 2.5 μm and agreed well with modeled thresholds using experimentally determined parameters including nonlinear absorption coefficients and temperature dependent linear absorption. The damage threshold for a single-layer Al2O3 anti-reflective coating on Ge was 55% or 35% lower than the uncoated threshold for ps or ns pulses, respectively. Wavelength-dependant …

Electronic State Distributions Of Y Ba2Cu3O7-X Laser Ablated Plumes, Patrick D. Kee Sep 2008

Electronic State Distributions Of Y Ba2Cu3O7-X Laser Ablated Plumes, Patrick D. Kee

Theses and Dissertations

The application of spectral and imagery diagnostics to YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) laser-ablated plumes was systematically studied to determine their effectiveness for process control. Emission signatures were collected for plumes created by ablating bulk YBCO with a pulsed laser source. A KrF (λ=248 nm) laser source operating at 4-10 J/cm2 at a 4-10 Hz pulse repetition frequency was used to ablate a bulk YBCO target at O2 background pressures ranging from 50 to 400 mTorr. Emission spectra were collected over the 500 to 860 nm bandpass at distances from the target ranging from 31.4 to …

Investigation Of Ba, Bao, Sr And Sro Pulsed Laser-Induced Vapor Plumes In N2, O2, Microwave Discharged O2, And Vacuum At Low Laser Fluence, David L. Byers Dec 1996

Investigation Of Ba, Bao, Sr And Sro Pulsed Laser-Induced Vapor Plumes In N2, O2, Microwave Discharged O2, And Vacuum At Low Laser Fluence, David L. Byers

Theses and Dissertations

Ba, BaO, Sr and SrO were ablated by 248 nm laser pulses at fluences ranging from 270 mJ-/sq cm to 575 mJ-/sq cm in vacuum and in 25 mtorr atmospheres of N2, O2 and microwave-discharged O2. The spectral emissions of these plumes were compared for indications of ionization due to Ba or Sr collisions with each gas. The addition of a background gas increased the ion and neutral signature across the spectrum. SrO band emission was observed at 16,600-16,900/cm and possible BaO band emissions were observed in the 18,250-18,400/cm, 19,000-19700/cm and 19,800-20,000/cm regions. A screened plate ion probe was use …
