Mode-Sum Prescription For The Vacuum Polarization In Odd Dimensions, Peter Taylor, Cormac Breen Dec 2016

Mode-Sum Prescription For The Vacuum Polarization In Odd Dimensions, Peter Taylor, Cormac Breen

Articles

We present a new mode-sum regularization prescription for computing the vacuum polarization of a scalar field in static spherically-symmetric black hole spacetimes in odd dimensions. This is the first general and systematic approach to regularized vacuum polarization in higher dimensions. Remarkably, the regularization parameters can be computed in closed form in arbitrary dimensions and for arbitrary metric function $f(r)$. In fact, we show that in spite of the increasing severity and number of the divergences to be regularized, the method presented is mostly agnostic to the number of dimensions. Finally, as an explicit example of our method, we show plots …

Exotic Statistics For Strings In 4d Bf Theory, John C. Baez, Derek K. Wise, Alissa S. Crans

Alissa Crans

After a review of exotic statistics for point particles in 3d BF theory, and especially 3d quantum gravity, we show that string-like defects in 4d BF theory obey exotic statistics governed by the 'loop braid group'. This group has a set of generators that switch two strings just as one would normally switch point particles, but also a set of generators that switch two strings by passing one through the other. The first set generates a copy of the symmetric group, while the second generates a copy of the braid group. Thanks to recent work of Xiao-Song Lin, we can …

Microstructural Analysis Of Thermoelastic Response, Nonlinear Creep, And Pervasive Cracking In Heterogeneous Materials, Alden C. Cook Dec 2016

Microstructural Analysis Of Thermoelastic Response, Nonlinear Creep, And Pervasive Cracking In Heterogeneous Materials, Alden C. Cook

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is concerned with the development of robust numerical solution procedures for the generalized micromechanical analysis of linear and nonlinear constitutive behavior in heterogeneous materials. Although the methods developed are applicable in many engineering, geological, and materials science fields, three main areas are explored in this work. First, a numerical methodology is presented for the thermomechanical analysis of heterogeneous materials with a special focus on real polycrystalline microstructures obtained using electron backscatter diffraction techniques. Asymptotic expansion homogenization and finite element analysis are employed for micromechanical analysis of polycrystalline materials. Effective thermoelastic properties of polycrystalline materials are determined and compared …

Complex Solutions Of The Time Fractional Gross-Pitaevskii (Gp) Equation With External Potential By Using A Reliable Method, Nasir Taghizadeh, Mona N. Foumani Dec 2016

Complex Solutions Of The Time Fractional Gross-Pitaevskii (Gp) Equation With External Potential By Using A Reliable Method, Nasir Taghizadeh, Mona N. Foumani

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this article, modified (G'/G )-expansion method is presented to establish the exact complex solutions of the time fractional Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation in the sense of the conformable fractional derivative. This method is an effective method in finding exact traveling wave solutions of nonlinear evolution equations (NLEEs) in mathematical physics. The present approach has the potential to be applied to other nonlinear fractional differential equations. Based on two transformations, fractional GP equation can be converted into nonlinear ordinary differential equation of integer orders. In the end, we will discuss the solutions of the fractional GP equation with external potentials.

Iterative Solution Of Fractional Diffusion Equation Modelling Anomalous Diffusion, A. Elsaid, S. Shamseldeen, S. Madkour Dec 2016

Iterative Solution Of Fractional Diffusion Equation Modelling Anomalous Diffusion, A. Elsaid, S. Shamseldeen, S. Madkour

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this article, we study the fractional diffusion equation with spatial Riesz fractional derivative. The continuation of the solution of this fractional equation to the solution of the corresponding integer order equation is proved. The series solution is obtained based on properties of Riesz fractional derivative operator and utilizing the optimal homotopy analysis method (OHAM). Numerical simulations are presented to validate the method and to show the effect of changing the fractional derivative parameter on the solution behavior.

A Generalized Polynomial Identity Arising From Quantum Mechanics, Shashikant B. Mulay, John J. Quinn, Mark A. Shattuck

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

We establish a general identity that expresses a Pfaffian of a certain matrix as a quotient of homogeneous polynomials. This identity arises in the study of weakly interacting many-body systems and its proof provides another way of realizing the equivalence of two proposed types of trial wave functions used to describe such systems. In the proof of our identity, we make use of only elementary linear algebra and combinatorics and thereby avoid use of more advanced conformal field theory in establishing the aforementioned equivalence.

Exploring Mathematical Strategies For Finding Hidden Features In Multi-Dimensional Big Datasets, Tri Duong, Fang Ren, Apurva Mehta

STAR Program Research Presentations

With advances in technology in brighter sources and larger and faster detectors, the amount of data generated at national user facilities such as SLAC is increasing exponentially. Humans have a superb ability to recognize patterns in complex and noisy data and therefore, data is still curated and analyzed by humans. However, a human brain is unable to keep up with the accelerated pace of data generation, and as a consequence, the rate of new discoveries hasn't kept pace with the rate of data creation. Therefore, new procedures to quickly assess and analyze the data are needed. Machine learning approaches are …

Some 2-Categorical Aspects In Physics, Arthur Parzygnat

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

2-categories provide a useful transition point between ordinary category theory and infinity-category theory where one can perform concrete computations for applications in physics and at the same time provide rigorous formalism for mathematical structures appearing in physics. We survey three such broad instances. First, we describe two-dimensional algebra as a means of constructing non-abelian parallel transport along surfaces which can be used to describe strings charged under non-abelian gauge groups in string theory. Second, we formalize the notion of convex and cone categories, provide a preliminary categorical definition of entropy, and exhibit several examples. Thirdly, we provide a universal description …

A Three-Fold Approach To The Heat Equation: Data, Modeling, Numerics, Kimberly R. Spayd, James G. Puckett

Math Faculty Publications

This article describes our modeling approach to teaching the one-dimensional heat (diffusion) equation in a one-semester undergraduate partial differential equations course. We constructed the apparatus for a demonstration of heat diffusion through a long, thin metal rod with prescribed temperatures at each end. The students observed the physical phenomenon, collected temperature data along the rod, then referenced the demonstration for purposes in and out of the classroom. Here, we discuss the experimental setup, how the demonstration informed practices in the classroom and a project based on the collected data, including analytical and computational components.

Nullification Of Torus Knots And Links, Zachary S. Bettersworth Jul 2016

Nullification Of Torus Knots And Links, Zachary S. Bettersworth

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Knot nullification is an unknotting operation performed on knots and links that can be used to model DNA recombination moves of circular DNA molecules in the laboratory. Thus nullification is a biologically relevant operation that should be studied.

Nullification moves can be naturally grouped into two classes: coherent nullification, which preserves the orientation of the knot, and incoherent nullification, which changes the orientation of the knot. We define the coherent (incoherent) nullification number of a knot or link as the minimal number of coherent (incoherent) nullification moves needed to unknot any knot or link. This thesis concentrates on the study …

Why 3-D Space? Why 10-D Space? A Possible Simple Geometric Explanation, Vladik Kreinovich Jul 2016

Why 3-D Space? Why 10-D Space? A Possible Simple Geometric Explanation, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In physics, the number of observed spatial dimensions (three) is usually taken as an empirical fact, without a deep theoretical explanation. In this paper, we provide a possible simple geometric explanation for the 3-D character of the proper space. We also provide a simple geometric explanation for the number of additional spatial dimensions that some physical theories use. Specifically, it is known that for some physical quantities, the 3-D space model with point-wise particles leads to meaningless infinities. To avoid these infinities, physicists have proposed that particles are more adequately described not as 0-D points, but rather as 1-D strings …

Nonlinear Harmonic Modes Of Steel Strings On An Electric Guitar, Joel Wenrich May 2016

Nonlinear Harmonic Modes Of Steel Strings On An Electric Guitar, Joel Wenrich

Senior Theses

Steel strings used on electric and acoustic guitars are non-ideal oscillators that can produce imperfect intonation. According to theory, this intonation should be a function of the bending stiffness of the string, which is related to the dimensions of length and thickness of the string. To test this theory, solid steel strings of three different linear densities were analyzed using an oscilloscope and a Fast Fourier Transform function. We found that strings exhibited more drastic nonlinear harmonic behavior as their effective length was shortened and as linear density increased.

Experimental Demonstration Of Topological Effects In Bianisotropic Metamaterials, Alexey P. Slobozhanyuk, Alexander B. Khanikaev, Dmitry S. Filonov, Daria A. Smirnova, Andrey E. Miroshnichenko, Yuri S. Kivshar

Publications and Research

Existence of robust edge states at interfaces of topologically dissimilar systems is one of the most fascinating manifestations of a novel nontrivial state of matter, a topological insulator. Such nontrivial states were originally predicted and discovered in condensed matter physics, but they find their counterparts in other fields of physics, including the physics of classical waves and electromagnetism. Here, we present the first experimental realization of a topological insulator for electromagnetic waves based on engineered bianisotropic metamaterials. By employing the near-field scanning technique, we demonstrate experimentally the topologically robust propagation of electromagnetic waves around sharp corners without backscattering effects.

Interplay Between Anomalous Transport And Catalytic Reaction Kinetics In Single-File Nanoporous Systems, Dajiang Liu, Jigang Wang, David Ackerman, Igor I. Slowing, Marek Pruski, Hung-Ting Chen, Victor S.-Y. Lin, James W. Evans

Jigang Wang

Functionalized nanoporous materials have broad utility for catalysis applications. However, the kinetics of catalytic reaction processes in these systems can be strongly impacted by the anomalous transport. The most extreme case corresponds to single-file diffusion for narrow pores in which species cannot pass each other. For conversion reactions with a single-file constraint, traditional mean-field-type reaction-diffusion equations fail to capture the initial evolution of concentration profiles, and they cannot describe the scaling behavior of steady-state reactivity. Hydrodynamic reaction-diffusion equations accounting for the single-file aspects of chemical diffusion can describe such initial evolution, but additional refinements are needed to incorporate fluctuation effects …

Off the Lip Conference - Transdisciplinary Approaches to Cognitive Innovation

The promise of cognitive innovation as a collaborative project in the sciences, arts and humanities is that we can approach creativity as a bootstrapping cognitive process in which the energies that shape the poem are necessarily indistinguishable from those that shape the poet. For the purposes of this conference the exploration of the idea of cognitive innovation concerns an understanding of creativity that is not exclusively concerned with conscious human thought and action but also as intrinsic to our cognitive development. As a consequence, we see the possibility for cognitive innovation to provide a theoretical and practical platform from which …

Principal Component Analysis-Based Anatomical Motion Models For Use In Adaptive Radiation Therapy Of Head And Neck Cancer Patients, Mikhail Aleksandrovich Chetvertkov Jan 2016

Principal Component Analysis-Based Anatomical Motion Models For Use In Adaptive Radiation Therapy Of Head And Neck Cancer Patients, Mikhail Aleksandrovich Chetvertkov

Wayne State University Dissertations

Purpose: To develop standard and regularized principal component analysis (PCA) models of anatomical changes from daily cone beam CTs (CBCTs) of head and neck (H&N) patients, assess their potential use in adaptive radiation therapy (ART), and to extract quantitative information for treatment response assessment.

Methods: Planning CT (pCT) images of H&N patients were artificially deformed to create “digital phantom” images, which modeled systematic anatomical changes during Radiation Therapy (RT). Artificial deformations closely mirrored patients’ actual deformations, and were interpolated to generate 35 synthetic CBCTs, representing evolving anatomy over 35 fractions. Deformation vector fields (DVFs) were acquired between pCT and synthetic …

Development Of A Novel Fe Based Heterogeneous Catalyst For Co2 Conversion, Scott Bamonte Jan 2016

Development Of A Novel Fe Based Heterogeneous Catalyst For Co2 Conversion, Scott Bamonte

Post & Beyond

Greenhouse gas emission has been a growing problem on the earth because of global warming and pollution of our air. The primary objective of this project is to develop a novel Fe based heterogeneous catalyst to enhance the catalytic conversion of CO2 by H2 for the synthesis of value added chemicals such as CO, methanol and fuels. We are focusing on iron for this catalyst because iron is one of the most abundant elements in the world and is very cheap making it optimal for catalyst use. The Fe-based solution we developed can be tuned to be either acidic or …

On Geometry Of Finsler Causality: For Convex Cones, There Is No Affine-Invariant Linear Order (Similar To Comparing Volumes), Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Some physicists suggest that to more adequately describe the causal structure of space-time, it is necessary to go beyond the usual pseudo-Riemannian causality, to a more general Finsler causality. In this general case, the set of all the events which can be influenced by a given event is, locally, a generic convex cone, and not necessarily a pseudo-Reimannian-style quadratic cone. Since all current observations support pseudo-Riemannian causality, Finsler causality cones should be close to quadratic ones. It is therefore desirable to approximate a general convex cone by a quadratic one. This cane be done if we select a hyperplane, and …
