Capillary Surfaces In An Exotic Container: Results From Space Experiments, Paul Concus, Robert Finn, Mark M. Weislogel

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Experimental results from the Interface Configuration Experiment (ICE) performed aboard the Space Shuttle and the Mir Space Station are reported. The experiment concerns fluid interfaces in certain ‘exotic’ containers in a low-gravity environment. These containers are rotationally symmetric and have the property that for given contact angle and liquid volume, a continuum of distinct rotationally symmetric equilibrium configurations can appear, all of which have the same mechanical energy. These symmetric equilibrium configurations are unstable, in that deformations that are not rotationally symmetric can be shown mathematically to yield configurations with lower energy. It is found experimentally, in confirmation of mathematical …

Output Control Of Vertical Microcavity Light Emitting Device, James A. Lott Apr 1999

Output Control Of Vertical Microcavity Light Emitting Device, James A. Lott

AFIT Patents

An improved intracavity sensor based output power control for microcavity light emitting devices. An improved phototransistor transducer is both configured and physically disposed so that it passively transmits the spurious optical energy output of the microcavity light emitting device while simultaneously generating a light determined electrical signal of easily used large magnitude that is nearly free of error. The base-collector region of the transistor is disposed with a quantum well absorbing layer and produces a signal responsive to a selected emission wavelength. The configuration of the optical energy communicating transducer is arranged so that it is improved in sensitivity and …

MnZn-ferrite has been prepared via high-energy ball milling of elemental oxides MnO, ZnO, and α-Fe2O3. Neutron diffraction measurements suggest a high density of vacancies in a spinel structure. The spinel phase appears to comprise 99.8 wt % of the material in the sample milled for 40 h, with the remainder attributable to unreacted α-Fe2O3. The x-ray absorption near-edge structure was analyzed to provide an understanding of the charge state of the constituent Fe ions. This analysis reveals about 2/3 of Fe cations to be trivalent, increasing to about 3/4 after a 5 …

Two kinds of aqueous precursor solutions are used to synthesize Mn-Zn ferrite powders: (i) nitrate (NO) precursor-derived from solutions of Mn(NO3)2, Zn(NO3)2, and Fe(NO3)3; and (ii) acetate (AC) precursor-derived from solutions of Mn(CH3COOO)2, Zn(CHCH3COOO)2, and Fe(NO3)3. The composition of the powders synthesized from the precursor AC is very uniform, whereas powders derived from the precursor NO have Mn and Zn segregated on the particle surfaces. In addition, the powders synthesized from precursor AC are solid spherical …
