Structural Dynamics And Charge Transport In Room Temperature Ionic Liquids, Philip James Griffin Aug 2014

Structural Dynamics And Charge Transport In Room Temperature Ionic Liquids, Philip James Griffin

Doctoral Dissertations

Room temperature ionic liquids are an important class of materials due to their chemical tunability and numerous advantageous physicochemical properties. As a result, ionic liquids are currently being investigated for use in a wide array of chemical and electrochemical applications. Despite their great potential, however, the relationship between the chemical structure and physicochemical properties of ionic liquids is not well understood.

To this end, this dissertation presents experimental studies of the reorientational structural dynamics and charge transport properties of a variety of room temperature ionic liquids using quasielastic light scattering spectroscopy and broadband dielectric spectroscopy.

Atomistic Simulations Of The Fusion-Plasma Material Interface, Mostafa Jon Dadras Jul 2014

Atomistic Simulations Of The Fusion-Plasma Material Interface, Mostafa Jon Dadras

Jonny Dadras

A key issue for the successful performance of current and future fusion reactors is understanding chemical and physical processes at the Plasma Material Interface (PMI). The material surfaces may be bombarded by plasma particles in a range of impact energies (1 eV - a few keV) and kept at a range of temperatures (300 - 1000 K). The dominant processes at the PMI are reflection and retention of impacting particles and sputtering (chemical and physical). Sputtering leads to surface erosion and pollution of the plasma, both of which degrade reactor performance. Retention influences the recycling of the plasma, and in …

Improving Hybrid Solar Cells: Overcoming Charge Extraction Issues In Bulk Mixtures Of Polythiophenes And Zinc Oxide Nanostructures, Grant T. Olson Jun 2014

Improving Hybrid Solar Cells: Overcoming Charge Extraction Issues In Bulk Mixtures Of Polythiophenes And Zinc Oxide Nanostructures, Grant T. Olson

Master's Theses

Organic photovoltaics (OPVs) have received a great deal of focus in recent years as a possible alternative to expensive silicon based solar technology. Current challenges for organic photovoltaics are centered around improving their lifetimes and increasing their power conversion efficiencies. One approach to improving the lifetime of such devices has been the inclusion of inorganic metal oxide layers, but interaction between the metal oxides and common conjugated polymers is not favorable. Here we present two methods by which the interactions between polythiophenes and nanostructured ZnO can be made to be more favorable. Using the first method, direct side on attachment …

Kinetics Of Solid Phase Crystallization Of A-Ge Thin Films, John D. Graham May 2014

Kinetics Of Solid Phase Crystallization Of A-Ge Thin Films, John D. Graham

Macalester Journal of Physics and Astronomy

A method was developed to investigate the solid-phase crystallization (SPC) reaction undergone by germanium thin films. Amorphous films were grown by the radio-frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering and then annealed for a maximum of 6 hours at two temperatures: 446°C and 460°C. Crystallinity was measured by resistivity measurements, as well as crystal peak height and area taken from X-ray diffractometer (XRD) data. Initial data shows qualitative agreement with a nucleation-growth model for the observed kinetic process. However, observed peak narrowing phenomena suggests a comprehensive model of XRD measurements of polycrystalline thin films is needed for a rigorous interpretation of the results.

Understanding The Plasmonic Properties Of Metallic Nanostructures With Correlated Photon- And Electron-Driven Excitations, Vighter Ozezinimize Iberi May 2014

Understanding The Plasmonic Properties Of Metallic Nanostructures With Correlated Photon- And Electron-Driven Excitations, Vighter Ozezinimize Iberi

Doctoral Dissertations

The collective oscillation of the conduction band electrons in metal nanostructures, known as plasmons, can be used to manipulate light on length scales that are smaller than the diffraction limit of visible light. In this dissertation, a correlated approach is used to probe localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) in metallic nanostructures, and their application to surface-enhanced spectroscopy. This correlated approach involves the measurement of LSPRs with dark-field optical microscopy (resonance-Rayleigh scattering), and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). Structural parameters of the exact same nanostructures obtained from the STEM are subsequently used in performing fully …

Investigation Of The Addition Of Basalt Fibres Into Cement, Jahi Palme May 2014

Investigation Of The Addition Of Basalt Fibres Into Cement, Jahi Palme

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Mechanical properties of concrete are most commonly determined using destructive tests including: compression, flexure, and fracture notch specimen tests. However, nondestructive tests exist for evaluating the properties of concrete such as ultrasonic pulse velocity and impact echo tests. One of major issues with concrete (which has cement as its prime ingredient) is that unlike steel it is quasi-brittle material. It tends to want to crack when tensile stresses develop. Fibres have been added to concrete for many years to reduce the amount of and size of cracks cause by temperature changes or shrinkage. In more recent years, significant research has …

The Electrochemistry Of Hydrogen Peroxide On Uranium Dioxide And The Modelling Of Used Nuclear Fuel Corrosion Under Permanent Disposal Conditions, Linda Wu Apr 2014

The Electrochemistry Of Hydrogen Peroxide On Uranium Dioxide And The Modelling Of Used Nuclear Fuel Corrosion Under Permanent Disposal Conditions, Linda Wu

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis reports a series of investigations examining the corrosion process of used nuclear fuel under permanent disposal conditions. The motivation of the project is that the safety assessment of deep geological disposal of spent nuclear fuel requires a fundamental understanding of the processes controlling fuel corrosion which could lead to the release of radionuclides to the geosphere from a failed container.

One primary objective of this project was to develop a computational model in order to simulate fuel corrosion under the disposal conditions. A series of simulations based on COMSOL were designed and developed to determine the influence of …

Large-Scale Solution Synthesis Of Narrow Graphene Nanoribbons, Timothy H. Vo, Mikhail Shekhirev, Donna A. Kunkel, Martha D. Morton, Eric Berglund, Lingmei Kong, Peter M. Wilson, Peter A. Dowben, Axel Enders, Alexander Sinitskii

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

According to theoretical studies, narrow graphene nanoribbons with atomically precise armchair edges and widths of(1.1 eV), which makes them potentially promising for logic applications. Different top–down fabrication approaches typically yield ribbons with width >10nm and have limited control over their edge structure. Here we demonstrate a novel bottom–up approach that yields gram quantities of high-aspect-ratio graphene nanoribbons, which are only ~1 nm wide and have atomically smooth armchair edges. These ribbons are shown to have a large electronic bandgap of ~1.3 eV, which is significantly higher than any value reported so far in experimental studies of graphene nanoribbons prepared by …

Bringing together topic-related European Union-(EU)-funded projects, the so-called “NanoSafety Cluster” aims at identifying key areas for further research on risk assessment procedures for nanomaterials (NM). The outcome of NanoSafety Cluster Working Group 10, this commentary presents a vision for concern-driven integrated approaches for the (eco-)toxicological testing and assessment (IATA) of NM. Such approaches should start out by determining concerns, i.e. specific information needs for a given NM based on realistic exposure scenarios. Recognized concerns can be addressed in a set of tiers using standardized protocols for NM preparation and testing. Tier 1 includes determining physico-chemical properties, non-testing (e.g. structure …
