Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In olivine chalcogenide Mn2SiX 4 (X = S, Se) compounds, the Mn lattice produces a sawtooth, which is of critical significance in magnetism due to the potential for manifesting at bands in the magnon spectrum, a crucial component in magnonics. The compounds Mn2SiS4 and Mn2SiSe4 in Mn2SiX 4 family undergo antiferromagnetic phase transitions at T â?? 85 K and â?? 66 K, respectively, as determined from the specific heat, Cp(T). The average and local crystal structuresare determined using synchrotron X-ray, neutron diffraction, and X-ray total scattering data followed by Rietveld and pair distribution function (PDF) analysis. It is found from …

Plasmonic Nanomaterials-Based Point-Of-Care Biosensors, Rohit Gupta

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Point-of-care (POC) biosensors, although rapid and easy-to-use, are orders magnitude less sensitive than laboratory-based tests. Further they are plagued by poor stability of recognition element thus limiting its widespread applicability in resource-limited settings. Therefore, there is a critical need for realizing stable POC biosensors with sensitivity comparable to gold-standard laboratory-based tests. This challenge constitutes the fundamental basis of this dissertation work– to expand access to quality and accurate biodiagnostic tools. At the heart of these solutions lies plasmonic nanoparticles which exhibit unique optical properties which are attractive for label-free and labelled biosensors.Firstly, we improve the stability and applicability of label-free …

Pressure-Induced Phase Transition And Electronic Structure Changes In Equiatomic Fev, Homero Reyes Pulido

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Classical molecular dynamics methods can accurately describe a broad set of many-atomssystems. Although more economical, the results given by this framework lack the precision capable of density functional theory (DFT). Therefore, the structural stability of the B2 phase of a body-centered-cubic iron-vanadium (FeV) alloy using DFT on the electronic structure level is analyzed to verify and further explain classical results obtained by our group in this same alloy. Using Quantum Espresso and Phonopy for the computational simulations, the plotted band structure, electronic density of states (eDOS), phonon dispersions, charge density, and Fermi surfaces for various compressed unit cells are presented. …

Study Of Thermoelectric And Lattice Dynamics Properties Of 2d Layered Mx (M = Sn, Pb; X = S, Se, Te) And Zrs2 Compounds Using First-Principles Approach, Abhiyan Pandit

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this dissertation is the investigation of thermoelectric and lattice dynamics properties of two-dimensional (2D) MX (M = Sn, Pb; X = S, Se, Te) and ZrS2 compounds based on the first-principles density functional theory. The dimensionality reduction (e.g., using 2D structure) of bulk materials is found to have enhanced thermoelectric efficiency. This enhancement is attributed to the increase of the Seebeck coefficient as a result of higher electronic density of states near the Fermi level in low-dimensional materials. In addition, lowering the dimensionality increases phonon scattering near interfaces and surfaces in 2D materials, which leads to a …

Investigation Of Topological Phonons In Acoustic Metamaterials, Wenting Cheng May 2022

Investigation Of Topological Phonons In Acoustic Metamaterials, Wenting Cheng

Dissertations

Topological acoustics is a recent and intense area of research. It merges the knowledge of mathematical topology, condensed matter physics, and acoustics. At the same time, it has been pointed out that quasiperiodicity can greatly enhance the periodic table of topological systems. Because quasiperiodic patterns have an intrinsic global degree of freedom, which exists in the topological space called the hull of a pattern, where the shape traced in this topological space is called the phason. The hull augments the physical space, which opens a door to the physics of the integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) in arbitrary dimensions. In …

Crystal Growth And Property Tuning Of Layered Magnetic Topological Semimetals, Krishna Pandey

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The demand for energy-efficient devices has been growing rapidly due to the need for data-driven technologies and the global energy crisis. As device size approaches the atomic scale, the miniaturization of electronic devices may stop in the near future unless fundamentally new materials or device concepts are developed. The emergent topological materials with exotic properties show remarkable robustness against crystal lattice defects, which are promising for next-generation technology. These materials host exotic properties such as high mobility, large magnetoresistance, chiral anomaly, and surface Fermi arcs, etc. Among various topological materials, the ZrSiS-family materials exhibit two types of Dirac states, which …

Design And Analysis Of Marangoni-Driven Robotic Surfers, Mitchel L. Timm Jan 2022

Design And Analysis Of Marangoni-Driven Robotic Surfers, Mitchel L. Timm

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

We designed and experimentally studied the dynamics of two robotic systems that surf along the water-air interface. The robots were self-propelled by means of creating and maintaining a surface tension gradient resulting from an asymmetric release of isopropyl alcohol (IPA). The imbalance in the distribution of surface tension surrounding the robots generates a propulsive force commonly referred to as Marangoni propulsion. First, we considered a single surfer, which was custom-made with novel control mechanisms that allow for both forward motion and steering to be remotely adjusted solely through the manipulation of local surface stresses. We analyzed the performance of this …

Medical Applications Of Ultrasound: T-Cell Drug Delivery, Osteoporosis Diagnosis, And Biofilm Mitigation, Alina Karki

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

The ability of ultrasound to localize acoustic energy deposition and induce a biological effect within a target is examined in three novel biomedical applications: sonoporation, osteoporosis diagnosis, and biofilm mitigation.Ultrasound can excite encapsulated microbubbles, causing an acoustic cavitation effect in the vicinity of cells, temporarily increasing membrane permeability, and allowing cells to uptake foreign molecules. This non-viral transfection technique is called sonoporation. Our experimental study demonstrated that it could be effective for small interfering RNA (siRNA) delivery into an isolated mouse and human T-cells, which is a complex process despite its importance in treating numerous diseases. T-cells are non-proliferating, while …

Tuning Electroluminescence From Resonators Based On Fabry-Pérot Microcavity Oleds, Ekraj Dahal

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

This thesis comprises a series of methods for controlling the electroluminescence from Fabry-Pérot microcavity OLEDs by varying the resonator geometry and the location of the organic emitter within the resonator. In pursuit of this thesis, I conducted three experimental projects backed by theoretical modeling. First the thickness of the microcavity was varied to observe changes in resonant state wavelength, linewidth of the states, angular dispersion, and polarization splitting. The resulting electroluminescence can be tuned to span the entire color gamut using a single green chromophore. Electroluminescence of this green chromophore was used to pump the optical states of nominally identical …
