The Effects Of Joule Heating On Electric-Driven Microfluidic Flow, Alexander P. Spitzer Nov 2017

The Effects Of Joule Heating On Electric-Driven Microfluidic Flow, Alexander P. Spitzer

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

This study sought out to more clearly understand the relationship between Joule heating and fluid flow in microfluidic environments, and more specifically, under what circumstances would the fluid flow in the device possibly hinder an experiment being run on it. It had been previous theorised that an electric field may produce turbulence and even vortices within the fluid, which this study attempted to reproduce. Several variables were tested, namely insulating and conducting fluids, higher and lower AC voltages, Newtonian vs. non-Newtonian fluids, and higher and lower DC voltages. A correlation between these variables and turbulent flow was found, with more …

How To Enhance Interdisciplinary Competence—Interdisciplinary Problem-Based Learning Versus Interdisciplinary Project-Based Learning, Mirjam Brassler, Jan Dettmers Jul 2017

How To Enhance Interdisciplinary Competence—Interdisciplinary Problem-Based Learning Versus Interdisciplinary Project-Based Learning, Mirjam Brassler, Jan Dettmers

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Interdisciplinary competence is important in academia for both employability and sustainable development. However, to date, there are no specific interdisciplinary education models and, naturally, no empirical studies to assess them. Since problem-based learning (PBL) and project-based learning (PjBL) are learning approaches that emphasize students’ collaboration, both pedagogies seem suitable to enhance students’ interdisciplinary competence. Based on the principle of constructive alignment and four instructional principles on interdisciplinary learning, this paper proposes that students profit more from interdisciplinary PBL (iPBL) than interdisciplinary PjBL (iPjBL). A pre-post study was conducted with a sample of 95 students participating in iPBL and 183 students …

Mathematical Description And Mechanistic Reasoning: A Pathway Toward Stem Integration, Paul J. Weinberg Jul 2017

Mathematical Description And Mechanistic Reasoning: A Pathway Toward Stem Integration, Paul J. Weinberg

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Because reasoning about mechanism is critical to disciplined inquiry in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) domains, this study focuses on ways to support the development of this form of reasoning. This study attends to how mechanistic reasoning is constituted through mathematical description. This study draws upon Smith’s (2007) characterization of mathematical description of scientific phenomena as ‘‘bootstrapping,’’ where negotiating the relationship between target phenomena and represented relations is fundamental to learning. In addition, the development of mathematical representation presents a viable pathway towards STEM integration. In this study, participants responded to an assessment of mechanistic reasoning while cognitive interviews …

This paper is a generalization of the authors’ works in the field of asphaltene physics fulfilled in recent years. Specific features of the "insulator-semiconductor" phase transition in high-boiling hydrocarbon fractions are discussed. It is shown that the active resistance of the samples decreases with heating to (65 - 85)0 C. At the same time, the concentration of paramagnetic centers increases, which is confirmed by the EPR. The growth of electrical conductivity in high-boiling hydrocarbon fractions containing asphaltenes is caused by the temperature generation of charge carriers - free radicals (spins) formed as a result of the rupture of weak carbon-carbon …

Eurasian Journal of Physics and Functional Materials

We have developed method of preparation of luminescent polymer films based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), organic dyestilben 420 (St420) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Concentration of St420 which provides most efficient luminescence quantum yield was determined for PVA film. It was found that addition of 10 nm AgNPs to St420 samples in PVA leads to increase of absorption intensity and decrease of luminescence intensity. Quenching of emission of St420 by addition of AgNPs is probably due to charge transfer from the dye to metal nanoparticles. External quantum efficiency (EQE) curves of St420 PVA were measured for optimal concentration of the dye. …
