Counting Linearly Polarized Gluons With Lattice Qcd, Shuai Zhao Jan 2024

Counting Linearly Polarized Gluons With Lattice Qcd, Shuai Zhao

Physics Faculty Publications

We outline an approach to calculate the transverse-momentum-dependent distribution of linearly polarized gluons inside an unpolarized hadron on the lattice with the help of large momentum effective theory. To achieve this purpose, we propose calculating a Euclidean version of the degree of polarization for a fast-moving hadron on the lattice, which is ultraviolet finite, and no soft function subtraction is needed. It indicates a practical way to explore the distribution of the linearly polarized gluons in a proton and the linearly polarized gluon effects in hadron collisions on the lattice.

Collinear Factorization At Subasymptotic Kinematics And Validation In A Diquark Spectator Model, Juan V. Guerrero, Alberto Accardi

Physics Faculty Publications

We revisit the derivation of collinear factorization for Deep Inelastic Scattering at subasymptotic values of the four-momentum transfer squared, where the masses of the particles participating in the interaction cannot be neglected. By using an inclusive jet function to describe the scattered quark final state, we can restrict the needed parton kinematic approximations just to the four-momentum conservation of the hard scattering process, and explicitly expand the rest of the diagram in powers of the unobserved parton transverse momenta rather than neglecting those. This procedure provides one with more flexibility in fixing the virtuality of the scattered and recoiling partons …

Simultaneous Monte Carlo Analysis Of Parton Densities And Fragmentation Functions, Eric Moffat, W. Melnitchouk, Ted C. Rogers, N. Sato, Jefferson Lab Angular Momentum Collaboration Jan 2021

Simultaneous Monte Carlo Analysis Of Parton Densities And Fragmentation Functions, Eric Moffat, W. Melnitchouk, Ted C. Rogers, N. Sato, Jefferson Lab Angular Momentum Collaboration

Physics Faculty Publications

We perform a comprehensive new Monte Carlo analysis of high-energy lepton-lepton, lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron scattering data to simultaneously determine parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the proton and parton to hadron fragmentation functions (FFs). The analysis includes all available semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and single-inclusive e+e annihilation data for pions, kaons and unidentified charged hadrons, which allows the flavor dependence of the fragmentation functions to be constrained. Employing a new multistep fitting strategy and more flexible parametrizations for both PDFs and FFs, we assess the impact of different datasets on sea quark densities and confirm the previously observed suppression …

Drell-Yan Angular Lepton Distributions At Small X From Tmd Factorization, Ian Balitsky Jan 2021

Drell-Yan Angular Lepton Distributions At Small X From Tmd Factorization, Ian Balitsky

Physics Faculty Publications

The Drell-Yan process is studied in the framework of TMD factorization in the Sudakov region s » Q2 » q2 corresponding to recent LHC experiments with Q2 of order of mass of Z-boson and transverse momentum of DY pair ∼ few tens GeV. The DY hadronic tensors are expressed in terms of quark and quark-gluon TMDs with 1Q2 and 1Nc2 accuracy. It is demonstrated that in the leading order in Nc the higher-twist quark-quark-gluon TMDs reduce to leading-twist TMDs due to QCD equation of motion. The resulting hadronic tensors depend on …

Gauge-Invariant Tmd Factorization For Drell-Yan Hadronic Tensor At Small X, Ian Balitsky Jan 2021

Gauge-Invariant Tmd Factorization For Drell-Yan Hadronic Tensor At Small X, Ian Balitsky

Physics Faculty Publications

The Drell-Yan hadronic tensor for electromagnetic (EM) current is calculated in the Sudakov region s ≫ Q2 ≫q2 with 1Q² accuracy, first at the tree level and then with the double-log accuracy. It is demonstrated that in the leading order in Nc the higher-twist quark-quark-gluon TMDs reduce to leading-twist TMDs due to QCD equation of motion. The resulting tensor for unpolarized hadrons is EM gauge-invariant and depends on two leading-twist TMDs: f1 responsible for total DY cross section, and Boer-Mulders function h1. The order-of-magnitude estimates of angular distributions for DY …

Double Inclusive Small-X Gluon Production And Their Azimuthal Correlations In A Biased Ensemble, Gary Kapilevich Jan 2020

Double Inclusive Small-X Gluon Production And Their Azimuthal Correlations In A Biased Ensemble, Gary Kapilevich

Publications and Research

We consider double gg → g production in the presence of a bias on the unintegrated gluon distribution of the colliding hadrons or nuclei. Such bias could be due to the selection of configurations with a greater number of gluons or higher mean transverse momentum squared or, more generally, due to a modified spectral shape of the gluon distribution in the hadrons. Hence, we consider reweighted functional averages over the stochastic ensemble of small-x gluons. We evaluate explicitly the double inclusive gluon transverse momentum spectrum in high-energy collisions, and their azimuthal correlations, for a few simple examples of biases.

Master Integrals For The Two-Loop, Non-Planar Qcd Corrections To Top-Quark Pair Production In The Quark-Annihilation Channel, Matteo Becchetti, Roberto Bonciani, Valerio Casconi, Andrea Ferroglia, Simone Lavacca, Andreas Von Manteuffel Aug 2019

Master Integrals For The Two-Loop, Non-Planar Qcd Corrections To Top-Quark Pair Production In The Quark-Annihilation Channel, Matteo Becchetti, Roberto Bonciani, Valerio Casconi, Andrea Ferroglia, Simone Lavacca, Andreas Von Manteuffel

Publications and Research

We present the analytic calculation of the Master Integrals for the two-loop, non-planar topologies that enter the calculation of the amplitude for top-quark pair hadroproduction in the quark-annihilation channel. Using the method of differential equations, we expand the integrals in powers of the dimensional regulator ε and determine the expansion coefficients in terms of generalized harmonic polylogarithms of two dimensionless variables through to weight four.

Structure Constants Of Twist-Two Light-Ray Operators In The Triple Regge Limit, Ian Balitsky Jan 2019

Structure Constants Of Twist-Two Light-Ray Operators In The Triple Regge Limit, Ian Balitsky

Physics Faculty Publications

The structure constants of twist-two operators with spin j in the BFKL limit g2 → 0, j → 1 and g2/j-1∼ 1 are found from the calculation of the three-point correlator of twist-two light-ray operators in the triple Regge limit. It is well known that the anomalous dimensions of twist-two operators in this limit are determined by the BFKL intercept. Similarly, the obtained structure constants are determined by an analytic function of three BFKL intercepts.

Large Transverse Momentum In Semi-Inclusive Deeply Inelastic Scattering Beyond Lowest Order, B. Wang, J. O. Gonzalez-Hernandez, T. C. Rogers, N. Sato

Physics Faculty Publications

Motivated by recently observed tension between O(α2s) calculations of very large transverse momentum dependence in both semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan scattering, we repeat the details of the calculation through an O(α2s) transversely differential cross section. The results confirm earlier calculations, and provide further support to the observation that tension exists with current parton distribution and fragmentation functions.

Measuring The Weizsäcker-Williams Distribution Of Linearly Polarized Gluons At An Electron-Ion Collider Through Dijet Azimuthal Asymmetries, Adrian Dumitru, Vladimir Skokov, Thomas Ullrich Jan 2019

Measuring The Weizsäcker-Williams Distribution Of Linearly Polarized Gluons At An Electron-Ion Collider Through Dijet Azimuthal Asymmetries, Adrian Dumitru, Vladimir Skokov, Thomas Ullrich

Publications and Research

The production of a hard dijet with small transverse momentum imbalance in semi-inclusive DIS probes the conventional and linearly polarized Weizsäcker-Williams (WW) transverse momentum dependent (TMD) gluon distributions. The latter, in particular, gives rise to an azimuthal dependence of the dijet cross section. In this paper we analyze the feasibility of a measurement of these TMDs through dijet production in DIS on a nucleus at an electron-ion collider. We introduce the MCDIJET Monte Carlo generator to sample quark-antiquark dijet configurations based on leading-order parton level cross sections with WW gluon distributions that solve the nonlinear small-x QCD evolution equations. …

We report the first measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry ALL for midrapidity dijet production in polarized pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of √s = 200  GeV. The dijet cross section was measured and is shown to be consistent with next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD predictions. ALL results are presented for two distinct topologies, defined by the jet pseudorapidities, and are compared to predictions from several recent NLO global analyses. The measured asymmetries, the first such correlation measurements, support those analyses that find positive gluon polarization at the level of roughly 0.2 over the region of …

Iterative Monte Carlo Analysis Of Spin-Dependent Parton Distributions, Nobuo Sato, W. Melnitchouk, S. E. Kuhn, J. J. Ethier, A. Accardi, Jefferson Lab Angular Momentum Collaboration Jan 2016

Iterative Monte Carlo Analysis Of Spin-Dependent Parton Distributions, Nobuo Sato, W. Melnitchouk, S. E. Kuhn, J. J. Ethier, A. Accardi, Jefferson Lab Angular Momentum Collaboration

Physics Faculty Publications

We present a comprehensive new global QCD analysis of polarized inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, including the latest high-precision data on longitudinal and transverse polarization asymmetries from Jefferson Lab and elsewhere. The analysis is performed using a new iterative Monte Carlo fitting technique which generates stable fits to polarized parton distribution functions (PDFs) with statistically rigorous uncertainties. Inclusion of the Jefferson Lab data leads to a reduction in the PDF errors for the valence and sea quarks, as well as in the gluon polarization uncertainty at x ≳ 0.1 . The study also provides the first determination of the flavor-separated twist-3 PDFs …
