Energy Functional For Nuclear Masses, Michael Giovanni Bertolli Dec 2011

Energy Functional For Nuclear Masses, Michael Giovanni Bertolli

Doctoral Dissertations

An energy functional is formulated for mass calculations of nuclei across the nuclear chart with major-shell occupations as the relevant degrees of freedom. The functional is based on Hohenberg-Kohn theory. Motivation for its form comes from both phenomenology and relevant microscopic systems, such as the three-level Lipkin Model. A global fit of the 17-parameter functional to nuclear masses yields a root- mean-square deviation of χ[chi] = 1.31 MeV, on the order of other mass models. The construction of the energy functional includes the development of a systematic method for selecting and testing possible functional terms. Nuclear radii are computed within …

Estimating Anthropometric Marker Locations From 3-D Ladar Point Clouds, Matthew J. Maier Jun 2011

Estimating Anthropometric Marker Locations From 3-D Ladar Point Clouds, Matthew J. Maier

Theses and Dissertations

An area of interest for improving the identification portion of the system is in extracting anthropometric markers from a Laser Detection and Ranging (LADAR) point cloud. Analyzing anthropometrics markers is a common means of studying how a human moves and has been shown to provide good results in determining certain demographic information about the subject. This research examines a marker extraction method utilizing principal component analysis (PCA), self-organizing maps (SOM), alpha hulls, and basic anthropometric knowledge. The performance of the extraction algorithm is tested by performing gender classification with the calculated markers.

Symbolic Quantum Circuit Simplification In Sympy, Matthew Curry Jun 2011

Symbolic Quantum Circuit Simplification In Sympy, Matthew Curry

Physics

In the field of quantum information science, one can design a series of quantum logic operations known as a circuit. Circuits are the basis for quantum computations in quantum computing. As circuits will most likely be designed from a logical standpoint, there could exist mathematical redundancies which will lead to a larger circuit than necessary. These redundancies are computationally expensive, and there is a need for them to be found and eliminated to simplify the circuit. We present our research on finding the rules for simplifying circuits and its implementation in SymPy.

Local Fractional Functional Analysis And Its Applications, Yang Xiao-Jun Jan 2011

Local Fractional Functional Analysis And Its Applications, Yang Xiao-Jun

Xiao-Jun Yang

Local fractional functional analysis is a totally new area of mathematics, and a totally new mathematical world view as well. In this book, a new approach to functional analysis on fractal spaces, which can be used to interpret fractal mathematics and fractal engineering, is presented. From Cantor sets to fractional sets, real line number and the spaces of local fractional functions are derived. Local fractional calculus of real and complex variables is systematically elucidated. Some generalized spaces, such as generalized metric spaces, generalized normed linear spaces, generalized Banach's spaces, generalized inner product spaces and generalized Hilbert spaces, are introduced. Elemental …

Fundamentals Of Local Fractional Iteration Of The Continuously Nondifferentiable Functions Derived Form Local Fractional Calculus, Yang Xiaojun

Xiao-Jun Yang

A new possible modeling for the local fractional iteration process is proposed in this paper. Based on the local fractional Taylor’s series, the fundamentals of local fractional iteration of the continuously non-differentiable functions are derived from local fractional calculus in fractional space.

Local Fractional Integral Transforms, Yang X

Xiao-Jun Yang

Over the past ten years, the local fractional calculus revealed to be a useful tool in various areas ranging from fundamental science to various engineering applications, because it can deal with local properties of non-differentiable functions defined on fractional sets. In fractional spaces, a basic theory of number and local fractional continuity of non-differentiable functions are presented, local fractional calculus of real and complex variables is introduced. Some generalized spaces, such as generalized metric spaces, generalized normed linear spaces, generalized Banach’s spaces, generalized inner product spaces and generalized Hilbert spaces, are introduced. Elemental introduction to Yang-Fourier transforms, Yang-Laplace transforms, local …

Influence Of Energy Policy On The Rate Of Implementation Of Biogas Power Plants In Germany During The 2001-2010 Decade, Izabela Chasiak, Wojciech M. Budzianowski

Wojciech Budzianowski

The current article describes energy policy tools, which caused intensive development of biogas-based power generation in Germany during the 2001-2010 decade. The German system of financial support to biogas power plants is presented in details. It is shown that in Germany, i.e. in a country characterised by similar climate and potentials to renewable energy to Poland, biogas power plants cover 10,7% of electricity demands in 2010, while all renewable energy sources cover only 5,4% of electricity demands. It is emphasised that under favourable Polish energy policy, the development of biogas energy can be very rapid.

Modeling And Tuning Of Musical Percussive Beams, Eric Laukkanen Jan 2011

Modeling And Tuning Of Musical Percussive Beams, Eric Laukkanen

Summer Research

Standard vibraphone bars consist of aluminum beams which are traditionally tuned with an arched undercut, for the purpose of aligning the musical overtones harmonically. The acoustical effect of various progressions of undercuts on aluminum bars was studied using both an aluminum bar and a finite element computer model. The spectral signature of the aluminum bar was examined with a spectrum analyzer, and the corresponding eigenmodes were imaged with an electronic speckle pattern interferometer. These methods were used to analyze the changes in natural frequencies of the bar as matter was removed from various locations. Additionally, the aural character of each …

Muscle: A Simulation Toolkit Modeling Low Energy Muon Beam Transport In Crystals, Nazmus Saquib

Senior Projects Spring 2011

The project involves the development of MUSCLE (MUonS Cascade at Low Energy), a collection of programs written in C++ and Mathematica to numerically simulate the passage of low energy muon beams through crystals. Monte Carlo methods employing binary collision approximation calculations and appropriate molecular dynamics algorithms are implemented to construct the trajectories and determine the spatial distribution of stopped muons in single crystals. Channeling of muon particles along certain crystal planes are also found. Binary collision approximation and molecular dynamics algorithms are compared and the possible effect of channeling is discussed.
