Investigation Of Magnetic Field Profile Effects In Hall Thrusters, Oren Kornberg

The purpose of this study was to show the relationship of different magnetic field profiles to the acceleration region length of a Hall thruster. The general transport equations were simplified and solved using a one-dimensional analysis. Some of the model assumptions include quasineutrality, Maxwellian electrons, and negligible thruster wall effects. The solved equation kept magnetic field as an input to the model for the analysis. The magnetic field was altered by changing the shape through the thruster, while keeping the maximum point fixed, and by shifting the profile, while keeping the shape fixed. RedOx-based magnetohydrodynamic MHD[1] flows in three-dimensional microfluidic channels are investigated theoretically with a coupled mathematical model consisting of the Nernst-Planck equations for the concentrations of ionic species, the local electroneutrality condition for the electric potential, and the Navier-Stokes equations for the flow field. A potential difference is externally applied across two planar electrodes positioned along the opposing walls of a microchannel that is filled with a dilute RedOx electrolyte solution, and a Faradaic current transmitted through the solution results. The entire device is positioned under a magnetic field which can be provided by either a permanent magnet or an electromagnet. …

A series of experiments into the behavior of underexpanded jet flows has been conducted at NASA Langley Research Center. This work was conducted in support of the Return to Flight effort following the loss of the Columbia. The tests involved simulating flow through a hypothetical breach in the leading edge of the Space Shuttle Orbiter along its reentry trajectory, with the goal of generating a data set with which other researchers can test and validate computational modeling tools. Two nozzles supplied with high-pressure gas were used to generate axisymmetric underexpanded jets exhausting into a low-pressure chamber. These nozzles had exit …
