This paper presents an assessment of past and present technological innovations and research related to the present energy crisis-the impact and the interrelationship. In particular, it surveys the development of tidal power plants with particular emphasis on the past and present status of the Passamaquoddy-Cobscook Bay Dam Project. It exam1nes the benefits and environmental effects associated with tidal power development, and explores the causes and effects of the tides. It concludes w1th a brief detail of the feasibility of other renewable sources of energy-and of the impact of technological developments on marine and international affairs.

The Spatial And Temporal Distribution Of Fish Eggs And Larvae In Hempstead Bay Estuary, Joseph Adelard Lessard

The ichthyoplankton of Hempstead Bay estuary was sampled from December 1972 to mid March 1974. Eleven stations were sampled by towing a 0.5 meter diameter plankton net. Eggs were most abundant during June and July with an average concentration calculated to be above 5,500/100m³. Egg densities were the lowest during the fall and winter. Larvae were most frequently taken from March through July with densities varying greatly among the samples. The eggs of Brevoortia tyrannus, Anchoa mitchilli, Tautoga onitis, Tautogolabrus adspersus, and Scophthalmus aguosus and the larvae of Menidia menidia, Ammodvtes hexapterus and Pseudopleuronectes americanus constituted most …

Feeding Morphologies And Distribution Patterns Of Marine Cladocera In The Lower Chesapeake Bay, Sandra Layne Gilchrist

Temporal and spatial distributions of marine cladocera in the lower Chesapeake Bay estuary were observed over a year-long sampling period. The distributions of cladoceran species throughout the Bay were studied in relation to temperature and salinity. A survey of the species over the entire Bay is included to establish distribution patterns of the various species during a short time period.

Theoretical mathematical principles were used to predict feeding abilities of the Bay species. Mouthparts are described qualitatively and quantitatively to infer function. A mandibular index developed by Itoh (1970) was revised and employed in evaluating feeding methods interspecifically and interspecifically. …

On February 6, 1978, in the midst of the worst blizzard to hit the Northeast in 100 years, the 682-foot Greek tanker GLOBAL HOPE with more than 340,000 gallons of oil aboard, dragged her anchor and grounded in Salem Sound, Massachusetts, about 15 miles from downtown Boston. An estimated 83,000 gallons of oil escaped the stricken vessel to be deposited on two of the most historic and picturesque coastlines of Massachusetts. Some 2.4 million dollars were expended from the federal pollution fund in cleanup efforts. Production Of A Population Of The Stout Razor Clam (Tagelus Plebeius Solander) In A Virginia Estuary, Mark James Grussendorf

The annual net secondary production of the stout razor clam, Tagelous plebeius, was estimated at three sites on an intertidal sand flat at Lynnhaven Inlet, Virginia. Samples were taken at six week intervals for one year. The range of net production (P), mean annual biomass (B), and P/B ratios was 18.3-28.7 g m^-2year^-1, 27.2-53.3 g m^-2, and 0.54-0.67, respectively. The total biomass did not show significant seasonal variation though differences between sites were significant. Production varied temporally but was not significantly different between sites.

Turbulence Spectra In A Well-Mixed Estuary, Jong Yul Chung

This dissertation is an attempt to determine and describe some of the turbulent process in a well-mixed estuary. The processes are identified by the study of turbulent velocity fluctuations. These velocity records have been analyzed using standard digital methods to obtain spectral density, spectral energy, and cross-spectra of velocity. In order to study the generation and transfer of the turbulent moment and energy, and the intermittent nature of the so-called "Bursting or "ejections and sweeps," the distribution of u, v, w, and the Reynolds stress has been studied.

Geology Of The Mafic/Ultramafic Transition, Table Mountain, Western Newfoundland, Suzanne O'Connell

A thin (<200 m.) mafic suite and well developed mafic/ultramafic transition zone are exposed above a flat lying peridotite contact on northwestern Table Mountain. The igneous layering and sedimentary features indicate mineral deposition under conditions which promoted adcumulate growth, were capable of minor transport, and were subjected to at least minor tectonic activity during consolidation. Feldspathic,. mafic, and ultramafic dikes and veins cross-cut the layering. Microscopic futures indicate deformation at elevated temperature and/or low strain rates. Deformation is best developed within the transition zone, but cataclastic zones are most common in the hornblende gabbros. Orientations of layering, foliation, and lineation indicate a variable mafic/ultramafic transition and macroscopic folding. Geometric analysis indicates three distinct fold axis orientations: an east-west horizontal fold axis, a northeast trending modestly plunging axis, and a vertical though poorly defined axis. Such features demonstrate that an apparently simple contact relationship may be extremely complex. This has important implications for ocean floor accretion. The relatively simple ocean floor seismic stratigraphy masks very complex petrological and structural processes. Such processes may involve deposition in an actively convecting magma chamber with a differentially subsiding wedge (Dewey and Kidd, 1977), in which folding occurs in response to the steepening angle between the cumulate banding and the base of the magma chamber. The instability is enhanced by the different accumulation rates and densities of the minerals involved. The lineation may originally be a sedimentary feature indicative of transport direction from the convection cell, and perpendicular to the compressive stress which produced. the folding. The different orientations of lineations and fold axes could be produced by rotation of the ocean crustal blocks during lateral transport along the ocean floor and/or obduction. Further detailed study of ophiolite complexes will continue to shed light upon the nature and development of oceanic crust.

Previous work by many authors has implied that the Antarctic ice sheet underwent a major expansion in the latest Miocene. It was intended in the present study to use the oxygen isotope event, which could be expected to accompany this glacial expansion, as a stratigraphic marker to aid in the correlation of several DSDP Sites. Samples were taken at approximately 100,000 year intervals throughout the latest Miocene and early Pliocene sections at Sites 237 and 249 in the western Indian Ocean, Site 360 in the South Atlantic and Site 231 in the Gulf of Aden. A territorial ban on beach and sand removal in the U. S. Virgin Islands has resulted in a search for alternative sources. Insecure extra-territorial reserves and high shipping costs have made sand importation prohibitive. Recent surveys conducted in 1977 by the U. S. Geological Survey identified several nearshore sources of aggregate adjacent to the island of St. Thomas. In a 1978 workshop jointly conducted by the Government of the Virgin Islands and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration various alternatives were presented for sand extraction. Two alternatives are examined using a cost benefit approach.

This analysis of the U.S.-Canadian East Coast Fisheries Resource Agreement was initiated at the request of a group of fishing industry representatives concerned about some of the terms enumerated in this document. The purpose behind this research project was threefold. First, to determine if this Agreement was consistent with the intent of the FCMA. Second, to determine the economic impact of this Treaty upon the New England fishing industry. The third purpose, which is not in the scope of this paper, was to aid in determining what the response of the user groups should be.

The current negotiations between Japan and the Soviet Union on the amount of catch by Japanese within the Soviet Union's 200-mile zone and by the Soviet Union within the Japanese 200-mile zone are very complex. When the Soviets declared their 200-mile zone, Japan did not agree to Soviet fishing jurisdiction over the 200-mile zone surrounding these islands. In order to secure its traditional interests in fishing within the extensive 200-mile lines, including the disputed islands, Japan had to agree to the Soviet lines with a proviso that territorial questions would be separated from fishing rights. This paper explores the role played by the U.S. maritime unions in influencing the formation of American shipping policy. The thesis of the paper is that maritime unions have exerted great influence on legislators, through lobbying efforts to foster special-interest legislation which benefits union members at the expense of the taxpayer. The research is based on standard works on shipping and maritime labor relations, Hearings of the House and Senate Merchant Marine committees, and newspaper and magazine articles which trace the progress of various pieces of maritime legislation. This study pertains to the problem of international activity in an area of political and ecological sensitivity, the Southern Ocean. Of specific concern is the question of which group of states should have a voice in management of Antarctic krill. Results from four cruises in the outer continental shelf/slope region of the Middle Atlantic Bight demonstrate the effect of Norfolk Canyon, an east coast submarine canyon, on the exchange of local water masses. Seasonal distributions of water masses and water types around the canyon were determined from closely spaced (2-5 km) hydrographic and XBT stations. Five component water types representing shelf, winter (or cold pool), slope, warm Western North Atlantic and cool Western North Atlantic waters are defined by specific T/S signatures. A comparison of the bathymetric surveys of the 1850-series and 1950-series indicated an average sedimentation rate for the Virginia Chesapeake Bay of 0.55 m (1.81 ft) for the last century. A statistically significant relationship between the depth of water and the rate of sedimentation was found where high rates of sedimentation exist in extremely shallow water (0 to 2 m) and in intermediate depths (6 to 13 m), while low rates exist between 2 m and 6 m, and in some cases in water deeper than 13 m.
