Lagrange's Theory Of Analytical Functions And His Ideal Of Purity Of Method, Giovanni Ferraro, Marco Panza Dec 2011

Lagrange's Theory Of Analytical Functions And His Ideal Of Purity Of Method, Giovanni Ferraro, Marco Panza

MPP Published Research

We reconstruct essential features of Lagrange’s theory of analytical functions by exhibiting its structure and basic assumptions, as well as its main shortcomings. We explain Lagrange’s notions of function and algebraic quantity, and we concentrate on power-series expansions, on the algorithm for derivative functions, and the remainder theorem—especially on the role this theorem has in solving geometric and mechanical problems. We thus aim to provide a better understanding of Enlightenment mathematics and to show that the foundations of mathematics did not, for Lagrange, concern the solidity of its ultimate bases, but rather purity of method—the generality and internal organization of …

Elliptic Operators And Maximal Regularity On Periodic Little-Hölder Spaces, Jeremy Lecrone Dec 2011

Elliptic Operators And Maximal Regularity On Periodic Little-Hölder Spaces, Jeremy Lecrone

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

We consider one-dimensional inhomogeneous parabolic equations with higher-order elliptic differential operators subject to periodic boundary conditions. In our main result we show that the property of continuous maximal regularity is satisfied in the setting of periodic little-Hölder spaces, provided the coefficients of the differential operator satisfy minimal regularity assumptions. We address parameter-dependent elliptic equations, deriving invertibility and resolvent bounds which lead to results on generation of analytic semigroups. We also demonstrate that the techniques and results of the paper hold for elliptic differential operators with operator-valued coefficients, in the setting of vector-valued functions.

The Principle Of Linearized Stability For Size-Structured Population Models, M. El-Doma Dec 2011

The Principle Of Linearized Stability For Size-Structured Population Models, M. El-Doma

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The principle of linearized stability for size-structured population dynamics models is proved giving validity to previous stability results reported in, for example, El-Doma (2008-1). In particular, we show that if all the roots of the characteristic equation lie to the left of the imaginary axis then the steady state is locally exponentially stable, and on the other hand, if there is at least one root that lies to the right of the imaginary axis then the steady state is unstable. We also point out cases when there is resonance

Phase History Decomposition For Efficient Scatterer Classification In Sar Imagery, Dane F. Fuller Sep 2011

Phase History Decomposition For Efficient Scatterer Classification In Sar Imagery, Dane F. Fuller

Theses and Dissertations

A new theory and algorithm for scatterer classification in SAR imagery is presented. The automated classification process is operationally efficient compared to existing image segmentation methods requiring human supervision. The algorithm reconstructs coarse resolution subimages from subdomains of the SAR phase history. It analyzes local peaks in the subimages to determine locations and geometric shapes of scatterers in the scene. Scatterer locations are indicated by the presence of a stable peak in all subimages for a given subaperture, while scatterer shapes are indicated by changes in pixel intensity. A new multi-peak model is developed from physical models of electromagnetic scattering …

Solutions To Quasi-Relativistic Multi-Configurative Hartree-Fock Equations In Quantum Chemistry, Carlos Argáez García, Michael Melgaard Sep 2011

Solutions To Quasi-Relativistic Multi-Configurative Hartree-Fock Equations In Quantum Chemistry, Carlos Argáez García, Michael Melgaard

Articles

We establish existence of infinitely many distinct solutions to the multi-configurative Hartree-Fock type equations for N-electron Coulomb systems with quasi-relativistic kinetic energy for the n th electron. Finitely many of the solutions are interpreted as excited states of the molecule. Moreover, we prove existence of a ground state. The results are valid under the hypotheses that the total charge Z of K nuclei is greater than N-1 and that Z is smaller than a critical charge. The proofs are based on a new application of the Lions-Fang-Ghoussoub critical point approach to nonminimal solutions on a complete analytic Hilbert-Riemann manifold.

Pólya’S Theorem With Zeros, Mari Castle, Victoria Powers, Bruce Reznick

Faculty and Research Publications

Let be the real polynomial ring in variables. Pólya’s Theorem says that if a homogeneous polynomial is positive on the standard -simplex , then for sufficiently large all the coefficients of are positive. We give a complete characterization of forms, possibly with zeros on , for which there exists so that all coefficients of have only nonnegative coefficients, along with a bound on the needed.
