Euler Class Groups Of Polynomial And Sub Integral Extensions Of A Noetherian Ring., Md. Ali Zinna Dr.
Euler Class Groups Of Polynomial And Sub Integral Extensions Of A Noetherian Ring., Md. Ali Zinna Dr.
Doctoral Theses
ObjectiveThe main objectives of this thesis are the following:(i) To investigate the behaviour of the Euler class groups under integral and subintegral extensions. More precisely, given a subintegral (or integral) extension R+ S of Noetherian rings, we are interested in finding out the relationship between the Euler class group of R and the Euler class group of S.(ii) To develop a theory (namely, an extension of the theory of Euler class group to the Euler class group of R[T) relative to a projective R[T|-module L of rank 1) in order to detect the precise obstruction for a projective R[T]-module P …

Mat-Rix-Toe: Improving Writing Through A Game-Based Project In Linear Algebra, Adam Graham-Squire, Elin Farnell, Julianna Stockton
Elin R Farnell
The Mat-Rix-Toe project utilizes a matrix-based game to deepen students’ understanding of linear algebra concepts and strengthen students’ ability to express themselves mathematically. The project was administered in three classes using slightly different approaches, each of which included some editing component to encourage the improvement of the students’ mathematical thinking and writing. Differences in the implementation of the project illustrate the benefits and drawbacks of various methods of editing in the mathematics classroom and highlight recommendations for improvements in future implementations of the project.
Algebra 1 Students’ Ability To Relate The Definition Of A Function To Its Representations, Sarah A. Thomson
Algebra 1 Students’ Ability To Relate The Definition Of A Function To Its Representations, Sarah A. Thomson
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
One hundred high school Algebra students from a southern California school participated in this study to provide information on students’ ability to relate the definition of function to its representations. The goals of the study were (1) to explore the extent to which students are able to distinguish between representations of functions/non-functions; (2) to compare students’ ability to distinguish between familiar/unfamiliar representations of functions/non-functions; (3) to explore the extent to which students are able to apply the definition of function to verify function representations; and (4) to explore the extent to which students are able to provide an adequate definition …
Some Problems In Differential And Subdifferential Calculus Of Matrices., Priyanka Grover Dr.
Some Problems In Differential And Subdifferential Calculus Of Matrices., Priyanka Grover Dr.
Doctoral Theses
A central problem in many subjects like matrix analysis, perturbation theory, numerical analysis and physics is to study the effect of small changes in a matrix A on a function f(A). Among much studied functions on the space of matrices are trace, determinant, permanent, eigenvalues, norms. These are real or complex valued functions. In addition, there are some interesting functions that are matrix valued. For example, the (matrix) absolute value, tensor power, antisymmetric tensor power, symmetric tensor power. When a function is differentiable, one of the ways to study the above problem is by using the derivative of f at A, …
Infinitely Generated Clifford Algebras And Wedge Representations Of Gl∞|∞, Bradford J. Schleben
Infinitely Generated Clifford Algebras And Wedge Representations Of Gl∞|∞, Bradford J. Schleben
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this dissertation is to explore representations of $\mathfrak{gl}_{\infty|\infty}$ and associated Clifford superalgebras. The machinery utilized is motivated by developing an alternate superalgebra analogue to the Lie algebra theory developed by Kac. In an effort to establish a natural mathematical analogue, we construct a theory distinct from the super analogue developed by Kac and van de Leur. We first construct an irreducible representation of a Lie superalgebra on an infinite-dimensional wedge space that permits the presence of infinitely many odd parity vectors. We then develop a new Clifford superalgebra, whose structure is also examined. From here, we extend …
Explicit Construction Of First Integrals For The Toda Flow On A Classical Simple Lie Algebra, Patrick Seegmiller
Explicit Construction Of First Integrals For The Toda Flow On A Classical Simple Lie Algebra, Patrick Seegmiller
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Toda flow is a generalization of a dynamical system describing the interaction of particles in a one-dimensional crystal. The concepts and energy and conservation are prominent in the study of dynamical systems, and quantities which remain the same over the evolution of a system provide valuable insights into the system’s behavior. In the realm of mathematics these quantities are called first integrals, or integrals of motion. This paper provides a background for study of the Toda flow, a verification of its integrability, and programming code for finding these quantities which remain unchanged over the evolution of the system.
Teaching Algebra: A Comparison Of Scottish And American Perspectives, Brittany Munro
Teaching Algebra: A Comparison Of Scottish And American Perspectives, Brittany Munro
Undergraduate Honors Theses
A variety of factors influence what teaching strategies an educator uses. I analyze survey responses from algebra teachers in Scotland and Appalachia America to discover how a teacher's perception of these factors, particularly their view of mathematics itself, determines the pedagogical strategies employed in the classroom.
On The Fattening Of Lines In P3, Mike Janssen
On The Fattening Of Lines In P3, Mike Janssen
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
We follow the lead of Bocci and Chiantini and show how differences in the invariant alpha can be used to classify certain classes of subschemes of P^3. Specifically, we will seek to classify arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay codimension 2 subschemes of P^3 in the manner Bocci and Chiantini classified points in P^2. The first section will seek to motivate our consideration of the invariant alpha by relating it to the Hilbert function and gamma, following the work of Bocci and Chiantini, and Dumnicki, et. al. The second section will contain our results classifying arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay codimension 2 subschemes of P^3. This work …

Some Conjugacy Problems In Algebraic Groups., Anirban Bose Dr.
Some Conjugacy Problems In Algebraic Groups., Anirban Bose Dr.
Doctoral Theses
In this thesis we address two problems related to the study of algebraic groups and Lie groups. The first one deals with computation of an invariant called the genus number of a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field and that of a compact connected Lie group. The second problem is about characterisation of real elements in exceptional groups of type F4 defined over an arbitrary field. Let G be a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field or a compact connected Lie group. Let ZG(x) denote the centralizer of x ∈ G. Define the genus …
Tropical Linear Algebra: Notions Of Rank Over The Tropical Semiring, William D. Wise
Tropical Linear Algebra: Notions Of Rank Over The Tropical Semiring, William D. Wise
Honors Papers
Three formulations of the rank of a matrix that are equivalent in classical linear algebra give rise to distinct notions of rank over the tropical semiring. This paper explores these three concepts of tropical rank and their relationships with one another, working up to a proof of the inequality that relates the three.
Building An Algebraic Representation Of The Aes In Sage, Thomas Gagne
Building An Algebraic Representation Of The Aes In Sage, Thomas Gagne
Summer Research
First developed in 2001, the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) cipher is now one of the most commonly used encryption algorithms worldwide. However, the algebraically simple description of the AES leads some cryptographers to question whether an algebraic weakness in the cipher exists, which would be fatal to the security of the AES. This summer, I studied the algebraic properties of the AES with the goal of designing a computational tool for researchers and algebraic cryptanalysts of the AES which would allow more rigorous study of the algebraic qualities of the AES. I accomplished this by implementing an algebraic representation of …
Presenting Distributive Laws, Marcello M. Bonsangue, Helle H. Hansen, Alexander Kurz, Jurriaan Rot
Presenting Distributive Laws, Marcello M. Bonsangue, Helle H. Hansen, Alexander Kurz, Jurriaan Rot
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
Distributive laws of a monad T over a functor F are categorical tools for specifying algebra-coalgebra interaction. They proved to be important for solving systems of corecursive equations, for the specification of well-behaved structural operational semantics and, more recently, also for enhancements of the bisimulation proof method. If T is a free monad, then such distributive laws correspond to simple natural transformations. However, when T is not free it can be rather difficult to prove the defining axioms of a distributive law. In this paper we describe how to obtain a distributive law for a monad with an equational presentation …
