In the modern age of data science, the necessity for efficient and insightful analytical tools that enable us to interpret large data structures inherently presents itself. With the increasing utility of metrics offered by the mathematics of hypergraph theory and algebraic topology, we are able to explore multi-way relational datasets and actively develop such tools. What if there was a way to detect undeclared (Clandestine) facilities using data sets from a nuclear facility? The Statistical Modeling and Experimental Design group at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory are developing the Modeling and Inference for Remote Sensing (MIRS) model. The model uses two deterrence scenarios within the nuclear fuel cycle to detect undeclared facilities. The two scenarios are used in an agent based nuclear fuel cycle simulator to produce the declared and undeclared feed, tails assay, and sink inventory in kilograms of Uranium. What if airport security teams across the world could quantify and then minimize the amount of risk throughout areas of an airport? The Operations Research Team at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is developing and implementing an optimization model called ARAM (Airport Risk Analysis Model) for the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. ARAM will provide a recommended optimal deployment of security assets to reduce risk in areas of an airport. The solid-liquid (s-l) interface is the most common interface encountered in electrochemical systems. The s-l interface has wide applications in energy storage, catalysis, and material sciences. In situ studies of chemical reactions taking place on the s-l interfaces can further our understanding of electron transfer and link to real-world device functions under challenging conditions. Direct probing of the solid electrode and liquid electrolyte interface has been realized using a vacuum compatible electrochemical microfluidic reactor, system for analysis at the liquid vacuum interface (SALVI) with time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). This report examines a new methodology in solving Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) numerically. The report also studies the accuracy of this new method as a PDE solver. This new Fourier Continuation (FC) method is one of a few that avoids the well-known Gibbs Phenomenon, which is the overestimation or underestimation of a function. These estimations are oscillations around a “jump” when a non-periodic function is expressed in terms of sines and cosines. Instead, the FC algorithm creates a smooth, periodic extension of a function over a general domain, as demonstrated by the many examples presented here. The FC algorithm was …

The goal of my research at the NOAO was to check the accuracy of the citizen science LP reporting systems entitled: Globe at Night (GaN), Dark Sky Meter (DSM), and Loss of the Night (LoN). On the GaN webpage, the darkness of the night sky (DotNS) is reported by selecting a magnitude chart. Each magnitude chart has a different density/number of stars around a specific constellation. This project explores the stability analysis of a given flow field. Specifically, where the peak disturbance occurs in a flow as this is the disturbance that is most likely to occur. In rocket combustion, it is important to understand where the maximum disturbance occurs so that the mixing of fuel can be stabilized. The instabilities are the results of frequencies in the area surrounding the flow field. The linear stability governing equations are employed to better understand the disturbance. Given time series data from multiple power generators containing measurements of phase angle taken at many points in time. The goal is to cluster together generators which have similar phase angle behavior.

In order to achieve this goal, Fast Fourier Transforms and Euclidean distances were used to quantify similarities between generators. A graph was created in which two generators were connected if they were sufficiently similar (known as a nearest neighbor graph). Modeling and Simulation (M&S) is used at the Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC) on Edwards Air Force Base (AFB) to better understand physical phenomena on aircraft. M&S allows for the reduction of cost and risk by providing a better understanding of required flight tests and the interactions between various forces and the aircraft (i.e. wind resistance, pressure change, and temperature change). The Flight Opportunities Program (FOP) exemplifies NASA’s shift in policy from a public driven space industry towards an emphasis on public-private partnerships. The Payloads team, as part of FOP, is responsible for soliciting, selecting and shepherding payloads that require flight testing in order to mature technologies, not only to reduce risk in a deep space or manned space missions, but also to develop critical technologies with multiple applications in space. Automated Theorem Provers (ATPs), are computer programs that use collections of axioms,which are logical statements assumed to be true, in order to prove conjectures. NASA uses these programs to verify safety and functional requirements in domains like Guidance, Navigation, and Control. There are about 30 axioms on each major topic including the theory of coordinate systems, elementary arithmetic and linear algebra.
