Essays In Social Choice Theory., Dipjyoti Majumdar Dr.
Doctoral Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to explore some issues in social choice theory and decision theory. Social choice theory provides the theoretical foundations for the field of public choice and welfare economics. It tries to bring together normative aspects like perspective value judgements and positive aspects, like strategic con- siderations. The second feature which is our focus, is closely related to the problem of providing appropriate incentives to agents, an issue of prime importance in eco- nomics.Consider for example, a set of agents who must elect one among a set of can- didates. These candidates may be physical agents …

Decision theory or the theory of choice is the analysis of individual behavior, typically in noninteractive situations. We can conceptualize two types of decision theory - normative and descriptive. A normative theory is concerned with identifying the best decision to make, modeling a decision maker who comports to certain ideals. A descriptive theory is a theory about how decisions are made. Such a theory is concerned with explaining observed behavior or predicting behavior under the assumption that the decision-maker or decision process follows some rules. The predictions about behavior that descriptive theory produces allow further tests of the assumed underlying, …
Mechanism Design In Sequencing Problems., Parikshit De Dr.
Mechanism Design In Sequencing Problems., Parikshit De Dr.
Doctoral Theses
Collective decision making is an important social issue, since it depends on individual preferences that are not publicly observable. Therefore, the question is, whether it is possible to elicit the private information available to individuals and then how to extract the private information in various strategic environment; Mechanism design deals with these questions. The difference between game theory and mechanism design is that, the former tries to predict the outcome of a strategic environment in some “equilibrium” but the latter tries to design or restrict the environment in such a way that the desired objective is attained, that is, the …

Essays On Economic Behaviour And Regulation., Subrato Banerjee Dr.
Doctoral Theses
To sum up, this thesis looks at agent behaviour in the laboratory, in the field, and in the market. Firstly, we impose a requirement in the laboratory (Chapter 2) that mimics a regulatory environment (similar to the introduction of a maximum retail price, or a legal fare subject to which an economic transaction must take place), and study individual behaviour subject to our (imposed) requirements. We then study the effect of real-life regulation on the behaviour of economic agents in the field. While the effect of regulation is seen in the field (that is, we see that many auto drivers …

Essays On Conflict And Organisation Theory., Dushyant Kumar Dr.
Doctoral Theses
Throughout the human civilization, domestic (intra country) conflicts have been present across societies, cultures and countries. These conflicts are extremely common as well as persistent. For the period 1960-2006, twenty percent of the countries have experienced at-least ten years of conflicts with more than 1000 casualties per year (Blattman and Miguel, 2010). It causes huge loss of human life, quantitatively, as well as qualitatively. It results in huge number of casualties, as well as damage to the existing output, resources and infrastructure. The persistent presence of such conflicts across the world means that a significant number of people as well …

Properties Of Some Matrix Classes In Linear Complementarity Theory., Arup Kumar Das Dr.
Properties Of Some Matrix Classes In Linear Complementarity Theory., Arup Kumar Das Dr.
Doctoral Theses
The linear complementarity problem is a fundamental problem that arises in optimization, game theory, economics, and engineering. It can be stated as follows:Given a square matrix A of order n with real entries and an n dimensional vector q, find n dimensional vectors w and z satisfying w − Az = q, w ≥ 0, z ≥ 0 (1.1.1) w t z = 0. (1.1.2)This problem is denoted as LCP(q, A). The name comes from the condition (1.1.2), the complementarity condition which requires that at least one variable in the pair (wj , zj ) should be equal to 0 …

Stability And Largeness Of The Core Of Cooperative Games., Amit K. Biswas Dr.
Doctoral Theses
This monograph deals with the area from game theory known as co operativo games. Except the last chapter on NTU games, it deals with transferable utility games. llere we will introiduce and diseus the involved game theuretie notions and set a mathematical hase for the chapters to come.In 1944 von Neamann and Morgenstern(15) introduced a theory of solutions for n-person games in characteristic function form in which cooperation and coalition formation is a crucial aspect. The primary mathematical concern regarding this model is the existence of solutions or stable set. In 1968 Lucas|19 described a tem person game which has …

Essays In Mechanism Design., Suresh Mutuswami Dr.
Doctoral Theses
The theory of implementation or mechanism design had its origins in the debates in the 1930s between Hayek, Lange and Lerner on the informational efficiency of the market economy. However, it was the work of Hurwicz in the 1950s and the 1960s which formalised the insights of Hayek, Lange and Lerner and paved the way for the body of work that followed his pioneering effort. In addition to the considerable theoretical literature on mechanism de- sign'. there also exists a body of literature which uses the mechanism design approach to address specific problems. Some examples of work in this vein include …

On Lipschitzian, And Connected Matrices In: Linear Complementarity Problem., Sriparna Bandyopadhyay Dr.
Doctoral Theses
This dissertation deals with a number of questions related to the linear complementarity problem (LCP). Given A ∈ Rn*n and q ∈ Rnthe LCP is to find a vector z ∈ R" such that Az+q ≥0,≥ and 2'(Az + 9) = 0. There is a vast literature on LCP developed during the last four decades. LCP plays a crucial role in the study of Mathematical Progranming from the point of view of algorithms as well as applications. The questions on existence and multiplicity of solutions in LCP has led researchers to introduce and study a variety of matrix classes. Most …

Some Contributions To Linear Complementarity Problem., G. S. R. Murthy Dr.
Doctoral Theses
This dissertation deals with a number of problems related to linear comple- mentarity problem (LCP). Given a real square matrix A of order n and a real n-vector q, the LCP is to find a nonnegative n-vector z such that Az + q 2 0 and zt(Az + 9) = 0. There is vast literature on LCP, evolved during the last four decades. LCP plays a crucial role in the study of mathematical program- ming from the view point of algorithms as well as applications. The inherent nature of the problem has led the researchers to introduce and study a …

Reliability theory has nequired a special significance during the last few decades. It is mainly because of rapid advancement in technology which has given rise to complex and sophisticated systems. These systema suf- fer from derign flawe and wenknesses and their failures not only result in monetary lom but also pose a serious threat to human life and national se curity. Hence product reliability and safety is of paramount importance to us. Since system effectiveness can be optimised during design and develop- ment phases, it therefore calls for a detailed reliability engineering program during initial stanges. Often we find that …

Sample survny an a tochnique for collantion of data haa been w1dely accepted since quite a long time and it is only during the thirties and forties that a more syetem matic development has taken place owing to the most signi- ficant and rcmarkable works of Cochran, Hansen, Hurwitz, Mahalanobie, Neyman, Sukhatme, Yates and othera. Daring thin period, there were many important advances and tremendous progress in this field was achieved in India under the direction of Professor P. C. Mahal anobis. Besides the theoretical developments, streen was laid on the practical techniques and large-scale sample aurveys played a major …
