Integrating Mathematics And Educational Robotics: Simple Motion Planning, Ronald I. Greenberg, George K. Thiruvathukal, Sara T. Greenberg

This paper shows how students can be guided to integrate elementary mathematical analyses with motion planning for typical educational robots. Rather than using calculus as in comprehensive works on motion planning, we show students can achieve interesting results using just simple linear regression tools and trigonometric analyses. Experiments with one robotics platform show that use of these tools can lead to passable navigation through dead reckoning even if students have limited experience with use of sensors, programming, and mathematics.

The study of ordinary differential equations has long been a staple in mathematics at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Recently, instruction in the study of difference equations has widened, primarily due to the expanded role of the digital computer in mathematics. The two topics are inextricably linked at all levels, from elementary techniques through current research questions. Pursuing the analogies between these fields of study can only deepen the understanding of each. This paper had its origin in a curious discovery by the first author in research performed with an undergraduate student. The following odd fact was noticed: when a mechanical model of a suspension bridge (linear near equilibrium but allowed to slacken at large distance in one direction) is shaken with a low-frequency periodic force, several different periodic responses can result, many with high-frequency components.

We study theoretically the effect of transverse boundary conditions on the traveling waves foundin infinitely extended and positively detuned laser systems. We find that for large-aspect-ratiosystems, well above threshold and away from the boundaries, the traveling waves persist. Sourceand sink defects are observed on the boundaries, and in very-large-aspect-ratio systems these defectscan also exist away from the boundaries. The transverse size of the sink defect, relative to the sizeof the transverse domain, is important in determining the final pattern observed, and so, close tothreshold, standing waves are always observed.

The Onset Of Oscillations In Microvascular Blood Flow, John B. Geddes, Russell T. Carr, Nathaniel J. Karst, Fan Wu

We explore the stability of equilibrium solution(s) of a simple model of microvascular blood flow in a two-node network. The model takes the form of convection equations for red blood cell concentration, and contains two important rheological effects—the Fåhræus–Lindqvist effect, which governs viscosity of blood flow in a single vessel, and the plasma skimming effect, which describes the separation of red blood cells at diverging nodes. We show that stability is governed by a linear system of integral equations, and we study the roots of the associated characteristic equation in detail. Maximal functions which measure the smoothness of a function are introduced and studied from the point of view of their relationship to classical smoothness and their use in proving embedding theorems, extension theorems and various results on differentiation. New spaces of functions which generalize Sobolev spaces are introduced.
