Statistical Partition Problem For Exponential Populations And Statistical Surveillance Of Cancers In Louisiana, Jin Gu
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, we consider the problem of partitioning a set of
k population with respect
to a control population. For this problem some multistage methodologies are proposed and their
properties are derived. Using the Monte Carlo simulation techniques, the small and moderate
sample size performance of the proposed procedure are studied.
We have also considered at statistical surveillance of various cancers in Louisiana.
Spatiotemporal Crime Analysis, James Q. Tay, Abish Malik, Sherry Towers, David Ebert
Spatiotemporal Crime Analysis, James Q. Tay, Abish Malik, Sherry Towers, David Ebert
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
There has been a rise in the use of visual analytic techniques to create interactive predictive environments in a range of different applications. These tools help the user sift through massive amounts of data, presenting most useful results in a visual context and enabling the person to rapidly form proactive strategies. In this paper, we present one such visual analytic environment that uses historical crime data to predict future occurrences of crimes, both geographically and temporally. Due to the complexity of this analysis, it is necessary to find an appropriate statistical method for correlative analysis of spatiotemporal data, as well …
Impacts Of Climate Change On The Evolution Of The Electrical Grid, Melissa Ree Allen
Impacts Of Climate Change On The Evolution Of The Electrical Grid, Melissa Ree Allen
Doctoral Dissertations
Maintaining interdependent infrastructures exposed to a changing climate requires understanding 1) the local impact on power assets; 2) how the infrastructure will evolve as the demand for infrastructure changes location and volume and; 3) what vulnerabilities are introduced by these changing infrastructure topologies. This dissertation attempts to develop a methodology that will a) downscale the climate direct effect on the infrastructure; b) allow population to redistribute in response to increasing extreme events that will increase under climate impacts; and c) project new distributions of electricity demand in the mid-21st century.
The research was structured in three parts. The first …
Light Pollution Research Through Citizen Science, John Kanemoto
Light Pollution Research Through Citizen Science, John Kanemoto
STAR Program Research Presentations
Light pollution (LP) can disrupt and/or degrade the health of all living things, as well as, their environments. The goal of my research at the NOAO was to check the accuracy of the citizen science LP reporting systems entitled: Globe at Night (GaN), Dark Sky Meter (DSM), and Loss of the Night (LoN). On the GaN webpage, the darkness of the night sky (DotNS) is reported by selecting a magnitude chart. Each magnitude chart has a different density/number of stars around a specific constellation. The greater number of stars implies a darker night sky. Within the DSM iPhone application, a …
Improvements On Segment Based Contours Method For Dna Microarray Image Segmentation, Yang Li
Improvements On Segment Based Contours Method For Dna Microarray Image Segmentation, Yang Li
Doctoral Dissertations
DNA microarray is an efficient biotechnology tool for scientists to measure the expression levels of large numbers of genes, simultaneously. To obtain the gene expression, microarray image analysis needs to be conducted. Microarray image segmentation is a fundamental step in the microarray analysis process. Segmentation gives the intensities of each probe spot in the array image, and those intensities are used to calculate the gene expression in subsequent analysis procedures. Therefore, more accurate and efficient microarray image segmentation methods are being pursued all the time.
In this dissertation, we are making efforts to obtain more accurate image segmentation results. We …
Are Highly Dispersed Variables More Extreme? The Case Of Distributions With Compact Support, Benedict E. Adjogah
Are Highly Dispersed Variables More Extreme? The Case Of Distributions With Compact Support, Benedict E. Adjogah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
We consider discrete and continuous symmetric random variables X taking values in [0; 1], and thus having expected value 1/2. The main thrust of this investigation is to study the correlation between the variance, Var(X) of X and the value of the expected maximum E(Mn) = E(X1,...,Xn) of n independent and identically distributed random variables X1,X2,...,Xn, each distributed as X. Many special cases are studied, some leading to very interesting alternating sums, and some progress is made towards a general theory.
Multi-Peak Solutions To Two Types Of Free Boundary Problems, Yi Li, Shuangjie Peng
Multi-Peak Solutions To Two Types Of Free Boundary Problems, Yi Li, Shuangjie Peng
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
We consider the existence of multi-peak solutions to two types of free boundary problems arising in confined plasma and steady vortex pair under conditions on the nonlinearity we believe to be almost optimal. Our results show that the “core” of the solution has multiple connected components, whose boundary called free boundary of the problems consists approximately of spheres which shrink to distinct single points as the parameter tends to zero.

Performance Modeling And Optimization Techniques For Heterogeneous Computing, Supada Laosooksathit
Doctoral Dissertations
Since Graphics Processing Units (CPUs) have increasingly gained popularity amoung non-graphic and computational applications, known as General-Purpose computation on GPU (GPGPU), CPUs have been deployed in many clusters, including the world's fastest supercomputer. However, to make the most efficiency from a GPU system, one should consider both performance and reliability of the system.
This dissertation makes four major contributions. First, the two-level checkpoint/restart protocol that aims to reduce the checkpoint and recovery costs with a latency hiding strategy in a system between a CPU (Central Processing Unit) and a GPU is proposed. The experimental results and analysis reveals some benefits, …
A Generalized Family Of Estimators For Estimating Population Mean Using Two Auxiliary Attributes, Sachin Malik, Rajesh Singh, Florentin Smarandache
A Generalized Family Of Estimators For Estimating Population Mean Using Two Auxiliary Attributes, Sachin Malik, Rajesh Singh, Florentin Smarandache
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
This paper deals with the problem of estimating the finite population mean when some information on two auxiliary attributes are available. A class of estimators is defined which includes the estimators recently proposed by Malik and Singh (2012), Naik and Gupta (1996) and Singh et al. (2007) as particular cases. It is shown that the proposed estimator is more efficient than the usual mean estimator and other existing estimators. The study is also extended to two-phase sampling. The results have been illustrated numerically by taking empirical population considered in the literature.
