The paper presents the research results of the air pollutant emissions from the graphitising process of fine carbon products in the Acheson furnace (discharge capacity 5,5 Mg). Research was performed for two kinds of raw material inputs (based on petroleum coke and pitch coke). Approximately 40-hours measurement series were carried out for each material including mainly such substances like carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, carbon disulphide, ammonia, benzene, toluene, xylenes, total dust, tar substances and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Both average and maximum concentrations and mass streams in the flue gases and average emission factors were presented …
The Karst Of West-Central Florida, Lee J. Florea
The Karst Of West-Central Florida, Lee J. Florea
Lee J Florea, PhD, P.G.
Caves, the cornerstone feature of karst aquifers, are little understood in Florida. This dissertation, which analyzes the morphology, elevation, lithologic setting, and hydrology of caves in west-central Florida, demonstrates that the karst of the unconfined Floridan aquifer differs from the paradigm view of karst presented in modern geology textbooks. The differences reflect setting: eogenetic (west-central Florida) vs. telogenetic (conventional).

The exposure of children to environmental disamenities has emerged as a key policy concern in recent years, with some analysts and activists suggesting that minority children are disproportionately impacted. Utilizing a dataset that combines air toxics at the census tract level with school-based demographic and other information, this article indicates disparate exposures for students of color in California schools and suggests that there may be negative impacts on one measure of academic performance, even after controlling for other factors usually associated with test scores. Policy implications include a special focus on school remediation and strengthening overall efforts to reduce emissions …

How Earth Remote Sensing From The International Space Station Complements Current Satellite‐Based Sensors, Jennifer Gebelein, Dean Eppler
Jennifer Gebelein
The International Space Station (ISS) will provide an Earth‐and space‐observing platform that will support sensors built by 16 different countries and deliver data and images for local, regional and global research. When complete, it will be an exceptional platform for conducting remote sensing of the Earth, astrophysics, and space physics research programmes. Additionally, the ISS will operate as a testbed for engineering studies and complex technological developments that will benefit future Earth‐observing capabilities. ...

The paper presents the new method for measurements of air particulate size distribution in real time using Kamika Infrared Particulate Sizer type P (IPS-P) with isokinetic air sampler. The device makes it possible to classify (sort) air particulates according to size into 256 granularity classes from about 0.4 µm up to 300 µm. Tests of the IPS-P prototype were conducted in Warsaw at the turn of 2005/2006 and some measurement results were presented in the work.

Characterizing Geometry, Kinematics, And Fracturing Of A Wavy Fault Surface, Arkitsa, Greece, Phillip Resor, Vanessa Meer
Phillip G Resor
The Arkitsa fault is a high angle normal fault within the Gulf of Evvia rift system of central Greece. Quarrying of hanging wall sediments has exposed a 600 m length of a wavy footwall fault surface within Triassic/Jurassic platform carbonates. This excellent exposure enables examination of fault damage zone processes up to hundred meter scale. Using a robotic reflectorless total station we create a virtual fault surface with 1-m spatial resolution and sub-cm precision that extends over a length of 250 m and a vertical height of 60 m. Zones of extreme curvature (antiforms and synforms) parallel the average slip …

Policy Challenges From The "White" Senate Inquiry Into Workplace-Related Health Impacts Of Toxic Dusts And Nanoparticles, Thomas A. Faunce, Haydn Walters, Trevor Williams, David Bryant, Martin Jennings, Bill Musk
Thomas A Faunce
On 22 June 2005 the Senate of the Commonwealth of Australia voted to establish an inquiry into workplace harm related to toxic dust and emerging technologies (including nanoparticles). The inquiry became known as the "White" Inquiry after Mr Richard White, a financially uncompensated sufferer of industrial sandblasting-induced lung disease who was instrumental in its establishment. The "White" Inquiry delivered its final report and recommendations on 31 May 2006. This paper examines whether these recommendations and their implementation may provide a unique opportunity not only to modernize relevant monitoring standards and processes, but related compensation systems for disease associated with workplace-related …
