Coal Geology & Exploration
Coalbed methane resource conditions and reservoir physical conditions are the basis of CBM exploration and exploitation. The geological modeling of CBM reservoir was carried out to clarify the spatial distribution of coal reservoir, and explain the difference of single well productivity, which can provide theoretical basis for selection and well drilling. This paper took Baode unit I as research object. Based on the measured data of gas content and well test permeability, the inversion model of gas content and permeability in the study area was established by using support vector machine algorithm(SVM) and transformed F-S permeability calculation formula, and the …

Evaluation Of Three Forest-Based Bioenergy Development Strategies In The Inland Northwest, United States, Jill Moroney
Evaluation Of Three Forest-Based Bioenergy Development Strategies In The Inland Northwest, United States, Jill Moroney
Human-Environment Systems Research Center Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this article, we compare three bioenergy scenarios that use woody biomass from US Inland Northwest forests. The scenarios are based on current bioenergy research, development efforts, and stakeholder input. They include a small-scale system that produces drop-in transportation biofuel and biochar, a large, regional system that produces bio-aviation fuel, and a midsized pellet production system. We modeled woody biomass harvest, processing, and transportation, and then evaluated profitability and potential socioeconomic impacts to determine the overall viability of each strategy. Through interviews, we found widespread stakeholder support for all three scenarios. Wood-pellet production was profitable and feasible with current prices …
Environmental Tradeoffs In Bioenergy Production And Agricultural Practices, Alicia Lynn English
Environmental Tradeoffs In Bioenergy Production And Agricultural Practices, Alicia Lynn English
Open Access Dissertations
The focus of this dissertation is the environmental tradeoffs of stover removal within the Corn Belt. The environmental tradeoffs considered are mainly concerned with managing soil erosion and soil quality. The analysis layers soil characteristics, management strategies and per acre costs using an integrated RUSLE2/WEPS model and an economic optimization model to illuminate a lower bound supply response. Different assumptions were tested in regards to sustainability, prices, and market integration for five states and 18,760 soil types throughout the Corn Belt. Sustainability was defined to limit soil erosion from wind and water to 5 tons/acre/year and the soil organic matter …

Environmental Assessments (UT)
This Environmental Assessment (EA) has been prepared to analyze the potential impacts of GASCO Production Company (GASCO) oil well drilling project in the 8 Mile Flat area of Uintah County, Utah. GASCO has a valid existing right to extract mineral resources from federal leases UTU-16544, UTU-76262, UTU-75090 & UTU-78433 subject to the lease's terms and conditions. The BLM oil and gas leasing program encourages development of domestic oil and gas reserves and the reduction of U.S. dependence on foreign energy sources.

When considering the market for biomass from corn stover resources erosion and soil quality issues are important to consider. Removal of stover can be beneficial in some areas, especially when coordinated with other conservation practices, such as vegetative barrier strips and cover crops. However, benefits are highly dependent on several factors, namely if farmers see costs and benefits associated with erosion and the tradeoffs with the removal of biomass. This paper uses results from an integrated RUSLE2/WEPS model to incorporate six different regime choices, covering management, harvest and conservation, into a simple profit maximization model to show these tradeoffs.

Shale Plays in the Intermountain West: Legal and Policy Issues (November 12)
This one-day symposium to be held at the Grand Hyatt hotel in Denver will address the technology, economics, environmental impacts, and regulatory issues associated with shale gas development in the Rocky Mountain region. The purpose of this event is to facilitate productive dialogue among a wide range of stakeholders and interested parties to guide policy decisions.
