Earth In Four Dimensions: Development Of The Ideas Of Geologic Time And History, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

Robert F. Diffendal, Jr., Publications

Changes in ideas and in technology can come about as slow incremental modifications, as well as by major paradigm shifts. In the case of the development of the ideas of geologic history and time, I will try to present these changes broadly and then look at how some of these have affected interpretation of Nebraska geology. Changes of view on three fronts were important in the development of geologic history and time concepts.

First is the question of the nature of time. Is time cyclic or is it linear? The Greco-Oriental cultures had a world view based on cosmic cycles, …

Cheyenne County Test-Hole Logs: Nebraska Water Survey Test-Hole Report No. 17, Robert F. Diffendal Jr. Apr 1999

Cheyenne County Test-Hole Logs: Nebraska Water Survey Test-Hole Report No. 17, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

Robert F. Diffendal, Jr., Publications

In 1930, the Conservation and Survey Division (CSD) of the University of Nebraska and the United States Geological Survey began a program of cooperative groundwater studies in Nebraska. Since then test drilling by use of rotary drilling equipment has been an integral part of that program. This report contains logs of all the test-holes drilled in the county under the program as well as those drilled by the Conservation and Survey Division with financial assistance from other government agencies. Also included are logs of test-holes drilled by cooperators with the South Platte Natural Resources District.

The maps in this report …

Geology And Ground Water, Garden County, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr. Jan 1999

Geology And Ground Water, Garden County, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

Robert F. Diffendal, Jr., Publications

All of Garden County (Nebraska) is underlain by the Brule Formation. This formation is tightly cemented and yields sufficient water to wells only in areas where the siltstone has been fractured. In most places the Brule Formation forms an impermeable seal that prevents water from moving downward from the overlying aquifers. The Arikaree Group is unimportant as an aquifer in the county, but the younger Ash Hollow Formation is important, particularly beneath the Cheyenne Tableland. Most, if not all, of the domestic and livestock wells on the tableland tap this aquifer. The thickness of the Ash Hollow Formation is 100 …

A Biogeochemical Comparison Of Fossil (Carboniferous) And Modern Crustose Red Algae, Michael A. Kruge, John E. Utgaard, William Ferry Jan 1999

A Biogeochemical Comparison Of Fossil (Carboniferous) And Modern Crustose Red Algae, Michael A. Kruge, John E. Utgaard, William Ferry

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The nature of the contribution of the various types of algae to sedimentary organic matter continues to be a topic of research interest. Crustose red algae have however received less attention than other types. The fossil calcareous red algae (Rhodophyta) analyzed in this study are two relatively unrecrystallized specimens of Parachaetetes (Family Solenoporacea) from the lower part of the Ste. Genevieve Formation (Carboniferous, Visean) in Union County, Illinois, USA. They occurred in the patch reef phase of a small carbonate mudmound-patchreef. The three modern specimens (collected and identified by F. Collier) are the crustose algae Lithothamnion, Clathromorphum and Phymatolithon …

2018 Nebraska Water Leaders Academy - Final Report, Mark E. Burbach Jan 1999

2018 Nebraska Water Leaders Academy - Final Report, Mark E. Burbach

Conservation and Survey Division

Nineteen participants completed the 2018 Water Leaders Academy bringing the total number of graduates to 120 since the inception of the program in 2011. Assessment of participants’ transformational leadership skills, champion of innovation skills, water knowledge and engagement, civic capacity, and entrepreneurial leadership behaviors showed a significant increase over the course of the year, from both participants’ and their raters’ perspectives. Feedback from participants was highly positive and constructive. Participant concerns were addressed, and only minor changes are planned for the 2019 Academy curriculum. Results of the program assessment indicate that the curriculum is meeting Academy objectives. Most importantly, Alumni …

A Synthesis Of Lead Isotopes In Two Millennia Of European Air, Charles Dunlap, Eiliv Steinnes, A. Russell Flegal Dec 1998

A Synthesis Of Lead Isotopes In Two Millennia Of European Air, Charles Dunlap, Eiliv Steinnes, A. Russell Flegal

Charles Dunlap

Four airborne particulate records from ombrotrophic peat bogs in southern Norway, extending back 300 years, have been measured for chronology, lead concentration, and lead isotope composition. Since southern Norway receives an airborne lead signal that accumulates emissions from the European continent, the trend in the four bog records can be used to correlate previously reported measurements from France, Switzerland, England, and Greenland that cover different ranges of time. When these are compiled, the integrated European record that emerges spans the last 2300 years of human influence on lead in the air over Europe and suggests human control of lead in …
