Topographic And Volcanic Asymmetry Around The Red Sea: Constraints On Rift Models, Timothy H. Dixon, Erik R. Ivins, Brenda J. Franklin

The Red Sea rift is asymmetric, with the locus of uplift and Tertiary volcanism in Saudi Arabia, 200–400 km east of the present rift axis. One model for this asymmetry involves simple shear extension on an east dipping, low-angle master fault that penetrates the lithosphere. Uplift and volcanism would mark the location where the fault enters the asthenosphere. However, observed seismicity, regional heat flow, and sedimentation are not in accord with this model's predictions. An alternate model involves interaction of upwelling asthenosphere in the early rifting stage with a nearby crustal weak zone such as a suture that controls rift …

The U. S. Geological survey recently used the method of residuals to delineate seven flood regions for the State of Kentucky. As an alternative approach, the FASTCLUS clustering procedure of the Statistical Analysis system (SAS) is used in this study to delineate five to six cluster regions in conjunction with statistical properties of the AMF series, like the coefficient of variation as estimated using method of L-moments, LCV, the parameters of the EVl and GEV flood frequency distributions, and the specific mean annual flood, QSP. Improved irrigation technology and advanced farm management practices offer an opportunity for agriculture to use water more efficiently. Farmers may install new equipment, such as drip irrigation systems, or adopt advanced water management practices to conserve water without sacrificing crop yields. While farmers' decision to adopt water-saving irrigation technology responds to the cost of water, physical properties of the land such as topography or soil properties of the land such as topography or soil texture dominate the choice of irrigation technology.

Low- And High-Relief Leduc Formation Reefs: A Seismic Analysis, Neil Lennart Anderson, Robert James Sidford Brown, Ronald C. Hinds

Leduc reefs have grown to widely varying heights and aereal extents along the Rimbey-Meadowbrook trend of central Alberta, resulting in significantly different seismic signatures. Three examples considered in this paper include two high-relief or full reefs from the Leduc-Woodbend field, an atoll and a pinnacle, each around 200 m in height but differing greatly in areal extent, about 100 km2 for the atoll and 1 km2 for the pinnacle. The third example, a low-relief or basalt reef from the Morinville field, is about 100 m high and 1 km2 in areal extent.

Calibration Of A General Optical Equation For Remote Sensing Of Suspended Sediments In A Moderately Turbid Estuary, Richard P. Stumpf, Jonathan Pennock

Abstract
A general algorithm for determining suspended sediment concentrations in the surface waters of estuaries has been developed for use with satellite data. The algorithm uses a three-parameter general optical equation to relate suspended sediment concentrations to water reflectances that have been corrected for sun angle effects, atmospheric path radiance, and tidal excursion. Using data collected by the advanced very high resolution radiometer on five different dates, reflectances were determined using two different methods, one providing maximum correction for haze and the other providing minimum sensitivity to pigments. A Revision Of The North American Papillose Allocreadiidae (Digenea) With Independent Cladistic Analyses Of Larval And Adult Forms, Janine N. Caira

Adult specimens of all 19 North American species of papillose allocreadiids were examined. A description and figure is given for the adult of each species; details of the cirrus sacs are presented for most spesies for the first time. Descriptions were emended where necessary and judgments were made on synonymies. Scanning electron micrographs of the oral sucker of 10 species are presented as is a new key to the 19 species. A cladistic analysis was performed on the group based on adult characters. The analysis indicated that the group is monophyletic on the basis of the ventral papillae associated with …

NMRS (165 ha) was leased from "Daisy Downs" (Manager Mr Ken Thompson) in 1985. NMRS was established in response to famer and local goverment demand for more research on the shallow, heavy soils in a low rainfall area. It is run along similar lines to the East Chapman Research Station (ECRS), with large rotation paddocks (42 ha) set up to study farming systems the remainder of the leased area being used for general experimental purposes.

Soil conservation survey collection
The 590 Ha Winchester sub-catchment has no apparent external drainage. Groundwater levels are rising causing site specific problems. Wind erosion has severely affected some areas.The objective of this report is to provide a sub-catchment management plan that is based on sustainable agricultural systems and a hydrological equilibrium. The recommendations aim to meet this objective in the long term. Recommendations to achieve short term results are considered separately. These measures have relatively high installation and maintenance costs. They should be considered as interim management methods until the recommendations for long-term control become effective (perhaps 3 - 5 years after implementation).

Uniaxial compression experiments at –10°C at 10−3s−1 on fresh-water, granular ice have established through the use of high-speed photography that internal cracks nucleate preferentially away from the ice/platen (i/p) interface under conditions of i/p contraint, but near the interface under conditions of i/p expansion. Under conditions of little i/p interaction, cracks nucleate more or less randomly throughout the specimen. Correspondingly, the brittle-fracture strength decreases as the i/p interaction changes from compressive to tensile. These effects are explained in terms of the spatial variation of the maximum shear stress and the crack density.
