Lithofacies Of The Pliocene Yorktown Formation In The Vicinity Of Kingsmill On The James River, Virginia, Michael David Lawless
Lithofacies Of The Pliocene Yorktown Formation In The Vicinity Of Kingsmill On The James River, Virginia, Michael David Lawless
OES Theses and Dissertations
The Yorktown Formation beds which crop out along the James River in southeastern Virginia near Kingsmill and Carter's Grove are lithologically described in order to compare them with the "typical" Yorktown beds upriver in the area of Fort Boykins, Rushmere, and Cobham Wharf. Thirty-four stratigraphic sections are constructed of the bluffs along the river. The Yorktown beds in the area of Kingsmill and Cobham Wharf are divided into ten lithofacies: the silty sand facies (B), the Chesapecten facies (C), the Glycymeris facies (D), the Chama facies (E), the glauconitic biofragmental sand facies (F), the laminated silty clay facies (G), the …

Trigger weight (TWC) and piston (PC) cores obtained from surveys of the three sites drilled during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 105 were studied in detail for benthic foraminiferal assemblages, total carbonate (all sites), planktonic foraminiferal abundances (Sites 645 and 647), and stable isotopes (Sites 646 and 647). These high-resolution data provide the link between modern environmental conditions represented by the sediment in the TWC and the uppermost cores of the ODP holes. This link provides essential control data for interpretating late Pleistocene paleoceanographic records from these core holes. At Site 645 in Baffin Bay, local correlation is difficult because …

Soil Micromorphologic Features Of Holocene Surface Weathering And A Possible Late Quaternary Buried Soil, Northwest Arkansas, Diane Phillips, Margaret J. Guccione
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Micromorphologic features of an alfisol developed in White River alluvium near Fayetteville, Arkansas are typical for this soil order. The A horizon has a relatively high organic matter content and an abundance of quartz sand grains with a silt and clay matrix. Voids are relatively common and some have been partly infilled. In contrast to the A horizon, the E horizon has less organic matter, larger voids, and some weak orientation of the clay matrix. The parent material for these horizons was deposited in the past 4,700 years and these pedologic horizons have formed since that time. In the underlying …

Stratigraphy, Diagenesis, And Depositional Environment Of The Cowlitz Formation (Eocene), Northwest Oregon, Leonard Carl Farr Jr.
Stratigraphy, Diagenesis, And Depositional Environment Of The Cowlitz Formation (Eocene), Northwest Oregon, Leonard Carl Farr Jr.
Dissertations and Theses
The Upper Eocene Cowlitz Formation is exposed in surface outcrops southwest of the town of Vernonia, in Columbia County, Oregon. The Cowlitz Formation also occurs in the subsurface of the Mist gas field where its Clark and Wilson (C and W) sandstone member (informal) acts as a natural gas reservoir, and its upper Cowlitz mudstone member (informal) acts as a cap rock. Surface exposures and continuous core were studied in order to determine Cowlitz Formation stratigraphy, and its depositional environment. Fresh core samples were also studied petrographically, and with a scanning electron microscope, in order to determine the effects of …
