Can I Afford To Spray For Weeds?, Scott Flynn Oct 2014

Can I Afford To Spray For Weeds?, Scott Flynn

Kentucky Grazing Conference

A common question among managers of grazing operations is “At what level of weed pressure does it become economical to apply herbicides on pastures?” Unfortunately there isn’t just one answer to this question as production goals and practices differ between operations and even within an operation over time. Regardless, the real question being ask is if weed control will increase profit per acre.

Grazing Options For Fall And Winter, Edward N. Ballard

Kentucky Grazing Conference

Feed costs represent the major cost in most livestock production systems. A recently completed analysis of 225 Standardized Performance Analysis (SPA) Beef Cow Records on herds in Illinois and Iowa showed that feed cost was the overriding factor determining profitability, explaining over 57 percent of the herd-to-herd variation.

Summer Grazing Options, S. Ray Smith, Krista Lea

Kentucky Grazing Conference

During the last 15 years there have been several new forage species that have emerged as useful in grazing systems and many new varieties have been released of traditional species. There are many sources of information on summer grazing options. We especially encourage you to read the publication written by Dr. Garry Lacefield and colleagues, “Extending Grazing and Reducing Stored Feed Needs” (AGR-199, www.uky.edu/Ag/Forage/agr199.pdf). I have used information from this publication and other publications from the University of Kentucky Forage Website (www.uky.edu/Ag/Forage) in writing this article.

Forage Legumes: Their Importance And Management In Profitable Livestock Systems, Ben M. Goff Oct 2014

Forage Legumes: Their Importance And Management In Profitable Livestock Systems, Ben M. Goff

Kentucky Grazing Conference

The landscape of most Kentucky operations is heavily dominated by the utilization of cool-season grasses as the primary source of forage for livestock. However, legumes species, such alfalfa and red or white clovers are an essential component to a complete forage-livestock system. Relative to grasses alone, incorporating legumes into a mixture has the benefits of improving the nutritive value of the available forage in the field, extending the grazing season by increasing the yield of forage during the early summer months, and providing a more economical source of N compared to commercial fertilizers. This paper will briefly describe each of …

Maximizing Stocker Gains On Pastures, Jeff Lehmkuhler Oct 2014

Maximizing Stocker Gains On Pastures, Jeff Lehmkuhler

Kentucky Grazing Conference

Stocker enterprises by definition utilize pasture forages to add weight to light weight feeder cattle. These operations add value to calves by assimilating small groups of calves and combining them into larger uniform packages. Stocker operators also enhance quality through livestock husbandry practices that “upgrade” feeders which could include castrating bulls, dehorning, improving immunity and other attributes. In an effort to optimize profit margins, stocker operators must manage feeders to ensure high rates of gain while finding a balance in stocking rates that provide adequate gains per acre.

Grazing Method: Tool Or Toolbox?, Garry D. Lacefield Oct 2014

Grazing Method: Tool Or Toolbox?, Garry D. Lacefield

Kentucky Grazing Conference

This conference makes the 15th consecutive year we have devoted a full day to Grazing. Kentucky is a great state for grazing animals since we have a relatively long pasture season, can grow many forage grasses and legumes and a long tradition of producing quality animal products from quality pasture. We have tremendous potential to improve our overall grazing efficiency and the discussion throughout the day will address many of the practical strategies for improvements.

Cosmogenic Radionuclides In Ice Cores From West Antarctica, Zhijie Chen, Thomas Edward Woodruff, Marc W. Caffee Aug 2014

Cosmogenic Radionuclides In Ice Cores From West Antarctica, Zhijie Chen, Thomas Edward Woodruff, Marc W. Caffee

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Cosmogenic nuclides such as 10Be and 26Al are formed in the atmosphere by cosmic rays and come down to the ground through snow which became ice in Antarctica. The concentrations of 10Be and 26Al in ice cores can reveal important information about climate change, solar activity and geomagnetic change in the past. They can also be used to date very old ice. Since there is very little 26Al in the ice, its actual concentration is poorly known and the measured results don’t agree with each other. My research is focused on the measurement of the …

Time Scale Creator (TSCreator), a geological chart generator, displays any portion of Earth history including chemo- magneto-, and other aspects. TSCreator is used by many universities, petroleum companies, and international geological surveys. In order to improve the quality of Time Scale Creator, tools were developed to provide users with more friendly graphical user interfaces (GUIs), accurate scaling of specific isotope, internationalization of data input and output, and smart depth scaling in wells to age conversion. To implement such tools, research for algorithm and common methods was basically done by searching articles online and reading posts on forums for Java developers. …

Three-Dimensional Deformable Pore Networks, Jack W. Conrad, Laura J Pyrak-Nolte Aug 2014

Three-Dimensional Deformable Pore Networks, Jack W. Conrad, Laura J Pyrak-Nolte

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Porous structures in materials play a part in many areas of research and development. A couple of examples of this are extraction of water through aquifers and oil through fracking processes. Current understanding of the small scale fluid-fluid interactions in the structure of these porous materials stops at data of the two dimensional interface between the two fluids. This experiment aimed to create three dimensional, transparent, deformable micro-models which are expected allow us to obtain three dimensional data sets of the capillary pressure–saturation–interfacial area per volume relationship. The micro-models were synthesized using a grain deposition technique. Grains were formed using …

Time, Money, And Melting Ice: Proposal For A Coopertive Study Of The World’S Cave Ice In A Race Against Climate Change, George Veni, Lewis Land, Aurel Perşoiu

The International Workshop on Ice Caves

Climate change is a global phenomenon that is melting and threatening to melt ice deposits in many of the world’s ice caves. The National Cave and Karst Research Institute of the USA is concerned that major and important paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental records stored in cave ice will soon be lost, and is proposing an international collaborative effort to overcome funding and logistical challenges to sample and analyze at least a representative collection of ice from several regions before further melting occurs.

Climate Study In An Abandoned Auto Tunnel In Alaska, Usa, Andreas Pflitsch, David Holmgren Aug 2014

Climate Study In An Abandoned Auto Tunnel In Alaska, Usa, Andreas Pflitsch, David Holmgren

The International Workshop on Ice Caves

An abandoned auto tunnel in south central Alaska in an elevation of 118 m above sea level seemed to be a perfect laboratory for studying the evolution of ice speleothems in a yearly cycle. More than 1,500 ice forms like stalagmites, stalactites, columns in various shape and arrangements, developed in just 2 month to a high up to 6 meters and lasted for another 5 to 6 month. In October just the remains of the melted ice in rings and rectangular patterns of a white powder could be found. Unfortunately the mostly sealed tunnel was opened in January 2014 by …

Some New Potential Subterranean Glaciation Research Sites From Velebit Mt. (Croatia), Neven Bočić, Nenad Buzjak, Zoltan Kern

The International Workshop on Ice Caves

Despite the frequent reports about their shrinkage detailed survey of the major subterranean ice deposits is still lacking in Croatia. Here we present cave maps and detailed description of cave ice accumulation from five caves of the Velebit Mt. Morphological constraints allowed ice volume estimation for four of them. Ice volumes were estimated as ~1500 m3 at the Gavranova Pit in 1999, 100 m3 at Štirovača ice cave in 1987, 150 m3 at Japagina 3 in 2000, 1500 m3 at Kugina ice cave in 2004. These new records provide reference data for future studies to evaluate …

Ice Caves On Extraterrestrial Bodies: What Are The Prospects For Speleogenesis And Detection?, Penelope J. Boston Aug 2014

Ice Caves On Extraterrestrial Bodies: What Are The Prospects For Speleogenesis And Detection?, Penelope J. Boston

The International Workshop on Ice Caves

Potential mechanisms for creating cavities in icy extraterrestrial bodies have been tentatively explored by several authors. On one hand we have examples of mechanisms that create caves in water ice here on Earth. In addition, there may be unique mechanisms on other Solar System objects that do not occur on Earth but might produce cavities, e.g. sublimation of comets upon perihelion passage. The methods of detecting such cavities depend upon the nature of the icy body in question, the potential for orbital or landed missions to visit those bodies in the future, and remote or landed methods for detecting the …

Internal Drainage Of Glaciers And Its Origin, Bulat R. Mavlyudov Aug 2014

Internal Drainage Of Glaciers And Its Origin, Bulat R. Mavlyudov

The International Workshop on Ice Caves

Ways of occurrence of elements of an internal drainage of glaciers and also origin of internal drainage systems as a whole are considered. It is shown that elements of an internal drainage can be formed either on the base of fissures and crevasses or by incision of water streams into ice from glacier surface. The basic way of glacier drainage is formed on the base of sliding plane which is formed closely to glacier bed and smooth all roughnesses of the bed. Spreading of water on the surface of this plane during spring time forms not effective drainage system however …

Numerical Modeling Of Formation Of A Static Ice Cave – Ningwu Ice Cave, Shanxi, China, Yaolin Shi, Shaohua Yang

The International Workshop on Ice Caves

Ningwu Ice Cave in Shanxi province, China, is the largest Ice cave in China. We use Finite Element Method(FEM) to model the process of heat transfer in the ice cave. We not only calculate thermal conduction in spring, summer and fall, but also calculate the convective heat transfer in winter by introducing an equivalent thermal conductivity of cave air. Our computation shows that the ice cave can be formed within a decade, and reach a stable cyclic state in few centuries. Our calculation also shows that if people set a trap door at the ice cave entrance, especially in winter, …

Open-Source, Low-Cost Sensor For Custom Water Level Monitoring In Observation Wells And Piezometers, Leslie A. Mowbray

Student Research Symposium

Many commercial sensors exist for monitoring water levels in piezometers and wells. However, these sensors tend to be expensive and contain proprietary hardware and software that make customization by users difficult. Recently, the vast open-source Arduino programming community has enabled the development of highly customizable, low cost sensors with the precision and accuracy needed for scientific research. Here, an ultrasonic distance sensor is developed to monitor the water level in a 2” piezometer with sub-centimeter resolution, powered by a lead-acid battery and solar cell to record sub-minute time increments for duration of days to weeks. This sensor was developed specifically …

Zircon: Tiny Crystals With Long History And Big Uses, Jiawen Li May 2014

Zircon: Tiny Crystals With Long History And Big Uses, Jiawen Li

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

The first known written record about zircon dates back to c.1400. Zircon forms in felsic magmas and thus is commonly found in plutonic felsic rocks. Because of its physical resistibility to weathering and metamorphism, it is also often found in metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. zircon is an orthosilicate and therefore is made up of isolated silica tetrahedra with zirconium ions filling in the gaps. This common structure allows zircon to incorporate many trace elements, such as thorium and uranium. Zircons long physical and chemical durability and the trace elements give rise to its use in geochronology. Thorium in zircon retain …
