Convolutional Neural Networks Analysis Reveals Three Possible Sources Of Bronze Age Writings Between Greece And India, Shruti Daggumati, Peter Z. Revesz Apr 2023

Convolutional Neural Networks Analysis Reveals Three Possible Sources Of Bronze Age Writings Between Greece And India, Shruti Daggumati, Peter Z. Revesz

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

This paper analyzes the relationships among eight ancient scripts from between Greece and India. We used convolutional neural networks combined with support vector machines to give a numerical rating of the similarity between pairs of signs (one sign from each of two different scripts). Two scripts that had a one-to-one matching of their signs were determined to be related. The result of the analysis is the finding of the following three groups, which are listed in chronological order: (1) Sumerian pictograms, the Indus Valley script, and the proto-Elamite script; (2) Cretan hieroglyphs and Linear B; and (3) the Phoenician, Greek, …

Split Classification Model For Complex Clustered Data, Katherine Gerot Mar 2022

Split Classification Model For Complex Clustered Data, Katherine Gerot

Honors Theses

Classification in high-dimensional data has generated tremendous interest in a multitude of fields. Data in higher dimensions often tend to reside in non-Euclidean metric space. This prevents Euclidean-based classification methodologies, such as regression, from reliably modeling the data. Many proposed models rely on computationally-complex embedding to convert the data to a more usable format. Others, namely the Support Vector Machine, rely on kernel manipulation to implicitly describe the "feature space" to arrive at a non-linear decision boundary. The proposed methodology in this paper seeks to classify complex data in a relatively computationally-simple and explainable manner.

The paper presents some results regarding the automatic mass estimation of Pintado Real fingerlings, using machine learning techniques to support the fish production process. For this purpose, an image dataset called FISHCV1206FSEG, was created which is composed of 1206 images of fingerlings with their respective annotated masses. Through the fish contours, the area and perimeter were extracted, and submitted to the J48, SVM, and KNN classification algorithms and a linear regression algorithm. The images were also submitted to ResNet50, In- ceptionV3, Exception, VGG16, and VGG19 convolutional neural networks. As a result, the classification algorithm J48 reached an accuracy of 58.2% …

Learnfca: A Fuzzy Fca And Probability Based Approach For Learning And Classification, Suraj Ketan Samal Aug 2019

Learnfca: A Fuzzy Fca And Probability Based Approach For Learning And Classification, Suraj Ketan Samal

Department of Computer Science and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Formal concept analysis(FCA) is a mathematical theory based on lattice and order theory used for data analysis and knowledge representation. Over the past several years, many of its extensions have been proposed and applied in several domains including data mining, machine learning, knowledge management, semantic web, software development, chemistry ,biology, medicine, data analytics, biology and ontology engineering.

This thesis reviews the state-of-the-art of theory of Formal Concept Analysis(FCA) and its various extensions that have been developed and well-studied in the past several years. We discuss their historical roots, reproduce the original definitions and derivations with illustrative examples. Further, we provide …

CSE Technical Reports

This document includes work-in-progress reports submitted to the Library of Congress as part of the Aida digital libraries research team's work on Digital Libraries, Intelligent Data Analytics, and Augmented Description: A Demonstration Project. These work-in-progress reports provide a snapshot glimpse, as well as underlying rationale and decision-making, at various points in the development of the project and its machine learning explorations. Reports cover explorations on historic newspapers, minimally-processed manuscript collections, materials digitized from physical originals and those digitized from microform surrogates, and investigate challenges related to image segmentation and document zoning, classification, document image quality analysis, metadata generation, and more.

Classification For Mass Spectra And Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Chromatograms, Xue Tian Aug 2011

Classification For Mass Spectra And Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Chromatograms, Xue Tian

Department of Computer Science and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Mass spectra contain characteristic information regarding the molecular structure and properties of compounds. The mass spectra of compounds from the same chemically related group are similar. Classification is one of the fundamental methodologies for analyzing mass spectral data. The primary goals of classification are to automatically group compounds based on their mass spectra, to find correlation between the properties of compounds and their mass spectra, and to provide a positive identification of unknown compounds.

This dissertation presents a new algorithm for the classification of mass spectra, the most similar neighbor with a probability-based spectrum similarity measure (MSN-PSSM). Experimental results demonstrate …

Temporal Data Classification Using Linear Classifiers, Peter Revesz, Thomas Triplet Sep 2009

Temporal Data Classification Using Linear Classifiers, Peter Revesz, Thomas Triplet

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

Data classification is usually based on measurements recorded at the same time. This paper considers temporal data classification where the input is a temporal database that describes measurements over a period of time in history while the predicted class is expected to occur in the future. We describe a new temporal classification method that improves the accuracy of standard classification methods. The benefits of the method are tested on weather forecasting using the meteorological database from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

An Automatic Bridge Detection Technique For Multispectral Images, D. Chaudhuri, Ashok Samal Jan 2008

An Automatic Bridge Detection Technique For Multispectral Images, D. Chaudhuri, Ashok Samal

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

Extraction of features from images has been a goal of researchers since the early days of remote sensing. While significant progress has been made in several applications, much remains to be done in the area of accurate identification of high-level features such as buildings and roads. This paper presents an approach for detecting bridges over water bodies from multispectral imagery. The multispectral image is first classified into eight land-cover types using a majority-must-be-granted logic based on the multiseed supervised classification technique. The classified image is then categorized into a trilevel image: water, concrete, and background. Bridges are then recognized in …
