Study On New Strategy Toward Gold(I/Iii) Redox Catalysis, Shuyao Zhang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation mainly contains three parts: 1) the study of ligand assisted gold oxidative addition toward aryl iodide to achieve the alkene difunctionalization. 2) The selective arylation reaction via electrochemical anode oxidation promoted gold redox chemistry. 3) The π acid reactivity of gold redox chemistry under electrochemistry conditions.

In the first part, the gold-catalyzed intermolecular oxyarylation of alkene is reported. This work employed the oxidative addition of aryl iodide to Me-DalphosAu+ for the formation of Au(III)-Ar intermediate. The better binding ability of alkene over O nucleophiles ensured the success of intermolecular oxyarylation, giving desired products with broad substrate scope and …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This research explores a novel method of increasing the solubility of uranium oxides and other actinide oxides in room temperature ionic liquids (IL) using direct dissolution. The goal is to further expand our knowledge of actinide dissolution and possible nuclear fuel cycle material applications using ionic liquids. The novelty of the methods is focused on the use of oxidizing gas generated using air passed through an ozone generator. While examples of dissolution exist in IL using acidic functionalized ionic liquids, the solubility of all possible oxide species was not demonstrated. Also, the addition of aqueous acid to IL containing actinide …

Development Of Novel Mass Spectrometric Methods For Reaction Screening, Oligosaccharide Detection, And Nitrosamine Quantitation, Qi Wang May 2022

Development Of Novel Mass Spectrometric Methods For Reaction Screening, Oligosaccharide Detection, And Nitrosamine Quantitation, Qi Wang

Dissertations

Benefitting from its high detection sensitivity and specificity, mass spectrometry (MS) has become a powerful technique in academia and industry. The aim of this dissertation study is to develop new mass spectrometric methods for organic reaction screening, detection of oligosaccharide/glycan in complex matrices, and nitrosamine absolute quantitation.

First, an electrochemistry/mass spectrometry (EC/MS) platform is built to generate an N-cyclopropylaniline radical cation electrochemically and to monitor its reactivity toward alkenes, which leads to the discovery of a new redox neutral reaction of intermolecular [3 + 2] annulation of N-cyclopropylanilines and alkenes. Net redox neutral electrosynthesis is quite rare in synthetic organic …

Nitro-Aromatic Polymers For Conversion-Style Battery Cathodic Materials, Brady P. Samuelson May 2022

Nitro-Aromatic Polymers For Conversion-Style Battery Cathodic Materials, Brady P. Samuelson

Honors Thesis

The development of organic electrode materials in rechargeable batteries has seen a resurgence in recent decades. This spike in interest is mostly due to the increased investments in renewable energy sources, grid-scale energy storage, and the rapid transition to electric vehicles. Current lithium battery cathode materials typically use some form of lithium metal oxide (specific capacity: 272 mAh g-1 which has problems with limited capacity, thermal runaway, and an unreliable supply chain. Our research group’s solution involves investigating new lightweight, organic redox groups combined with a conductive polymer backbone to serve as a possible replacement for the cathode in …

Investigating Ionic Current Rectification As A Means Of Controllable Drug Delivery Using Silica Nanoparticles And Nano Porous Membranes, Katie L. Nolan Apr 2022

Investigating Ionic Current Rectification As A Means Of Controllable Drug Delivery Using Silica Nanoparticles And Nano Porous Membranes, Katie L. Nolan

Honors College Theses

This project investigates a novel ionic current rectification (ICR) phenomenon created by the opening and closing of nanopores by charged silica nanoparticles (SNPs) under electrophoretic flow. This voltage-controlled opening and closing of the pores can be exploited to allow delivery of nicotine through the pores at programmable intervals. The ICR phenomenon was thoroughly investigated by varying pH, buffer concentration, SNP concentration, and applied voltage range. The mechanism was also verified by testing with a 2-, 3-, and 5-electrode system. Potential cake layer formation was demonstrated in a longer ICR test, and the implications of this on the drug delivery mechanism …

A Biomimetic Model For Oxidative Metabolism Of Thiopurine Drugs, Oluyemi Oludare Alo Feb 2022

A Biomimetic Model For Oxidative Metabolism Of Thiopurine Drugs, Oluyemi Oludare Alo

Dissertations and Theses

Type B hepatotoxicity has been reported for thiopurines, and this has limited their clinical uses. Although a lot of research has been done on thiopurines, the precise mechanism of their hepatotoxicity is still unclear. The results of the in vitro and in vivo experiments aimed at assessing the products of their CYP450-mediated bioactivation have been contradictory. Although it has been theorized that the hepatic toxicity of this class of drug is caused by their bioactivation to electrophilic reactive metabolite (RM) and concomitant protein binding to form immunogenic adducts, resulting in direct cellular dysfunction or an immune response via the formation …

Electrochemistry Of Bubbles: Developing New Sensors, Promoting Gas Evolution Reactions, And Extraction Of Rare Earth Elements, Ruchiranga R. Ranaweera

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation presents new analytical, electrocatalysis, and separation strategies that utilize bubble behaviors in different electrochemical systems. The first part of this dissertation focuses on the method development for PFAS preconcentration and detection. First, we present the bubble-nucleation-based electrochemical method for the selective and sensitive detection of surfactants. Our method utilizes the high surface activity of surfactant analytes to affect the electrochemical bubble nucleation and then transduces the change in nucleation condition to an electrochemical signal for determining the surfactant concentration. Using this method, we demonstrate the quantitation of perfluorinated surfactants in water, a group of emerging environmental contaminants, with …
