Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Catalysis is integral to our daily lives, as it streamlines and accelerates numerous chemical reactions essential for producing various materials, fuels, and chemicals. With the rising demand for clean, sustainable energy sources, optimizing catalytic materials and processes becomes increasingly vital. In the realm of renewable energy production, catalysis is crucial for efficiently converting energy from sustainable resources, such as solar, wind, and biomass, into chemical energy stored in fuels or directly into electrical energy. The electronic charge distribution in materials significantly influences their physical and chemical properties, facilitating the development of advanced electronic, optoelectronic, sensing, and energy conversion devices. Since catalysis …

Synthesis Of Fullerene Derivatives For Diverse Applications: From Catalysis To Photovoltaics, Olivia Fernandez-Delgado

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

AbstractFullerene functionalization has enabled the improvement in their solubility, optoelectronic, semiconductive, chemical and physical properties that allow their use in several fields such as photovoltaics, catalysis and for biological applications. Their good electron transporting properties have been widely studied in perovskite solar cell (PSC) devices and more recently, there have been more articles focused specifically on the molecular interactions of the fullerene functional groups with the perovskite layer which has allowed to obtain high power conversion efficiencies (PCE) of 25.5%. On the other hand, fullerenes are beginning to be studied as molecular catalysts for water splitting electrocatalytic processes, resulting in …

For more than a century transition metal sulfides (TMS) have been the anchor of hydro-processing fuels and upgrading bitumen and coal in refineries worldwide. As oil supplies dwindle and environmental laws become more stringent, there is a greater need for cleaner alternative fuels and/or synthetic fuels. The depletion of oil reserves and a rapidly increasing energy demand worldwide, together with the interest to reduce dependence on foreign oil makes alcohol production for fuels and chemicals via the Fischer Tropsch synthesis (FTS) very attractive. The original Fischer-Tropsch (FT) reaction is the heart of all gas-to-liquid technologies; it creates higher alcohols and …
