Investigating Synthetic Methods For Tio2-Nayf4 Hybrid Nanocrystals, Nurul Muttakin Jan 2022

Investigating Synthetic Methods For Tio2-Nayf4 Hybrid Nanocrystals, Nurul Muttakin

Dissertations and Theses

The capacity to develop and expand the utility of a single nanostructure is one of the major issues in the field of hybrid nanocrystals. Major advancements in the fabrication of materials with multiple functionalities by combining many materials into a single nanoparticle entity are intriguing, but they still pose obstacles that must be addressed. This trend has been spurred by significant progressions in the wet-chemical synthesis of durable and easily programmable nanocrystals with various morphologies. The extent of the structural complexity of solution-based nanocrystals looks to be one of the inevitable avenues along which nanoscience will increasingly focus. We have …

Semiconducting Polymer Dots-Based Ratiometric Fluorescent Probes For Detection Of Biomarkers, Shuyi He Jan 2022

Semiconducting Polymer Dots-Based Ratiometric Fluorescent Probes For Detection Of Biomarkers, Shuyi He

Dissertations and Theses

Biomarkers serve a key role in illness diagnosis and treatment. Importantly, early detection can boost the therapy success rate greatly. However, traditional approaches to detect biomarkers based on fluorescence intensity changes of individual fluorophores did not completely realize the potential due to several technical problems such as low sensitivity. Ratiometric fluorescent methods use changes in the intensity of two or more emission bands (caused by the analyte) to create an internal reference that improves detection sensitivity. Due to their unique photophysical properties, such as high fluorescence intensity, high quantum yield, and low toxicity, semiconductor quantum dots (Pdots) are an ideal …

Computational Study Of Quorum Quenching Of N-Acyl Homoserine Lactones By Ion Pairing To Cations, Ashen Anuradha Suduweli Kondage Jan 2022

Computational Study Of Quorum Quenching Of N-Acyl Homoserine Lactones By Ion Pairing To Cations, Ashen Anuradha Suduweli Kondage

Dissertations and Theses

Biofilms are the default state of microbial life and their formation on surfaces influences many processes. The coordinated behavior of microorganisms including their growth into biofilms occurs through a process termed quorum sensing during which they excrete specific signaling molecules called autoinducers. Recently it has been observed that Ag+ and Cu2+ ions interact with N-hexanoyl-L-homoserine autoinducers thereby inhibiting quorum sensing. Such inhibitors are called quorum quenchers. In this study, we have used density functional theory (DFT) calculations to study the ion pairing between select cations and short chained N-acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL) type autoinducers that are used by gram negative bacteria. …

Electron Deficient Fluoroarenes: Bridging Deoxyfluorination And Anion-Π Interactions To Produce New Fluorination Reagents, Jordan Houston Kramer Jan 2022

Electron Deficient Fluoroarenes: Bridging Deoxyfluorination And Anion-Π Interactions To Produce New Fluorination Reagents, Jordan Houston Kramer

Dissertations and Theses

Fluorination is a ubiquitous in modern materials and pharmaceuticals due to organofluorine compounds possessing unique physicochemical properties. However, this process is a demanding task due to difficulty in handling key reagents for selective fluorination. One strategy is the usage of deoxyfluorination reagents due to the wide availability of oxygen in many functional moieties. These reagents have allowed to production of new fluorinated materials and pharmaceuticals, yet the costs of several reagents and instabilities for others lead to restricted conditions, functional group tolerance, and safety risks for both users and the environment. Reported here is the culmination of a new hypothesis …

Density Functional Theory Of Samarium(Ii) Reactivity In Thf And Water, Parisa Fasihianifard Jan 2022

Density Functional Theory Of Samarium(Ii) Reactivity In Thf And Water, Parisa Fasihianifard

Dissertations and Theses

Sm(II) diiodide is widely used in organic synthesis for the reduction of functional groups such as esters, anhydrides, amides, carbonyls, and arenes. Moreover, in aqueous systems and in mixtures of water and THF, the addition of Sm(II) diiodide can reduce water directly resulting in the formation of hydrogen gas. However, the mechanism of these reactions is not completely understood, making it difficult to improve experimental design. The reaction can proceed either through subsequent electron-transfer proton-transfer (ET-PT), subsequent proton transfer electron-transfer (PT-ET), or via proton coupled electron transfer (PCET). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to understand the speciation of …

Computational Study On The Nucleation Of Polyoxovanadate-Alkoxide Clusters, S M Gulam Rabbani Jan 2022

Computational Study On The Nucleation Of Polyoxovanadate-Alkoxide Clusters, S M Gulam Rabbani

Dissertations and Theses

Polyoxovanadate-alkoxide (POV-alkoxide) clusters are a new class of electroactive species with potential electrochemical applications in redox catalysis, energy storage, and optoelectronics. These clusters' redox properties can be tuned by the functionalization via heterometallic installation and changing alkoxide ligands. However, the formation mechanism of these POV-alkoxides in the solvothermal process is unknown, limiting the rational design to improve their electronic properties. This dissertation reports the speciation study of POV-alkoxide clusters, which is fundamental to controlling and manipulating the evolution of transient species during their nucleation and tuning the final product's properties. Chapter 2 and chapter 3 describe our computational study of …

Photophysical, Electrochemical, And Catalytic Studies Of Anthraquinone And Pyridoxyl-Based Sensors And Development Of Ruthenium Photosensitizers, Anwar Hussain Jan 2022

Photophysical, Electrochemical, And Catalytic Studies Of Anthraquinone And Pyridoxyl-Based Sensors And Development Of Ruthenium Photosensitizers, Anwar Hussain

Dissertations and Theses

In the past, we have demonstrated the photophysical properties of several anthraquinone derivatives that act as a luminescent host for various environmental and biological cations. Here we extend our expertise in photochemistry to the class of chemicals containing the pyridoxal moiety. Several ligands were synthesized using eco-friendly, simple, one-step reactions via Schiff base and condensation reactions. The optical properties of these ligands were examined with a series of cations. We demonstrated the ability to detect the biologically important zinc ion in living cells such as RAW 264.7 and HEK 293 via fluorescence signaling. In addition, we extend our explorations to …

Nonhematopoietic Erythropoietin: A Study Of Signaling, Structure, And Behavior, Nicholas John Pekas Jan 2022

Nonhematopoietic Erythropoietin: A Study Of Signaling, Structure, And Behavior, Nicholas John Pekas

Dissertations and Theses

Erythropoietin (EPO) is a cytokine hormone known for initiating red blood cell proliferation by binding to its homodimer receptor (EPOR)2 in the bone marrow. Recent progress in neurobiology has shown that EPO also exerts robust neurotrophic and neuroprotective activity in the CNS. It is widely thought that EPO’s neurotrophic activity is centrally involved in its antidepressant and cognitive enhancing effects. However, EPO’s potent erythropoietic effects prevent it from being used in the clinic to treat psychiatric disorders. A chemically engineered non-erythropoietic derivative of EPO, carbamoylated EPO (CEPO), produces psychoactive effects without activating hematopoiesis. However, CEPO is expensive to produce and …
