Glyoxylic acid with the dual characteristics of acid and aldehyde is an important chemical raw material and organic synthesis intermediate, which is extensively used in the perfumery, pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries. A family of symmetric quaternary ammonium hydroxides (QAHs) with different alkyl chain lengths was used as the additives in generating glyoxylic acid from oxalic acid electroreduction reaction (OAER). The effects of alkyl chain length on OAER and the corresponding side reaction, i.e., hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), were investigated. A new method of electrocatalytic synthesis oxalic acid from acetylene was explored and the synthesized oxalic acid was characterized by Ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry (Uv-vis) and Infrared spectroscopy (IR). First-principles calculations were carried out to examine the adsorption of acetylene over the Pt(111) surface. The electrocatalytic oxidation behavior of acetylene has been investigated on a Pt electrode by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and steady-state polarization in Na2SO4 solution. The electrocatalytic oxidation degradation kinetics of oxalic acid in a cylindrical electrochemical reactor with Ti/IrO2-Ta2O5 as an anode was studied. The relation between instantaneous current efficiency and organic concentration in bulk was established based on the two paths for direct electrochemical oxidations, and the theoretical model was verified by experiments. The experimental resultswere reasonably consistent with the established kinetic model. Furthermore, the competition between the two paths was explored with the modelparameter analysis.

Oxalic acid electrochemical reduction has been suggested as an important technology to produce glyoxylic acid;the packed-bed electrochemical reactor with cooled cathode(PERCC)has been proposed to solve the problem of lower space-time-yield that appeared in the parallel electrode reactor.Based on the mass balance equations,charge balance equations and kinetics equations of the system,a two-dimensional reactor model was established to describe the continuous operation process for producing glyoxylic acid from oxalic acid by PERCC.Using the orthogonal collocation method,the model equations could be numerically solved,and the glyoxylic concentration along the reactor length could be simulated.The modeling results indicated that the glyoxylic concentration increased quickly at …

A simulative-continuous-operation approach was proposed to study the continuous operation for electroreduction of oxalic acid to gloxylic acid using a packed bed reactor and a parallel reactor with cooled cathode in order to solve the low productivity problem in current state by using traditional reactor.The effects of the concentration of oxalic acid and temperature on this process were also studied.Results showed that,after 30min of the reaction(residence time),the mass fraction of the produced glyoxylic acid in the catholic solution could reach 3.76% and 3.66% with respect to a saturated oxalic acid method and a step-temperature decreasing method.From this study,we conclude that …

The electroreduction mechanism of oxalic acid on Pb electrode in Na_2SO_4 solution were investigated using high scan rate cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The dynamic parameters for the first step electron transter reaction of oxalic acid electroreduction by were determined. The corresponding reduction peak potentials of oxalic acid, glyoxylic acid and glycolic acid in the cyclic voltammogranis obtained in the same condition were compared, and the intermediate reduction products of oxalic acid were suggested. The results showed that oxalic acid is weakly absorbed on the lead electrode.

Glyoxylic acid was produced by electroreduction of oxalic acid in a well designed cooled cathode reactor. The cathodic and anodic electrolytes were super_saturated oxalic acid and hydrochloric acid aqueous solutions separated by a super_acid ion_exchange membrane. The current efficiency and time_space yield of glyoxylic acid were studied under different temperatures of cathode and electrolyte,current densities,materials of cathode. With the cooled cathode reactor, the energy consumption was reduced and higher oxalic acid concentration was available in solution, so that current efficiency was improved. As for the process of the electro oxidation of glyoxal to glyoxalic acid, the electrolytic result of either fixed bed electrolytic cell or varying current electrolysis was better than that of either flat plate electrolytic cell or constant current electrolysis. The average current density of varying current electro synthesis of glyoxalic acid in pairs was 1535 A/m 2 and the current efficiency were 85.3% and 86.7% and the selectivity were 93.9% and 94.0% for the anodic oxidation and cathodal reduction respectively.
