Makara Journal of Science

Total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) is a pollutant agent found in water and generated from the metabolisms of living organisms and the decomposition of organic matter. This research aims to develop an efficient, low-cost, and environmentally friendly TAN analysis method. The principle of this method is based on the reaction of TAN injected in the donor stream with NaOH to form alkaline gaseous ammonia. The gaseous ammonia diffuses through a hydrophobic membrane into an acceptor stream containing Ruellia tuberosa extract. The presence of NH3 gas in the acceptor stream changes the extract color from pinkish to green, which is monitored …

Spectrophotometric Analysis Of Stability Of Gold Nanoparticles During Catalytic Reduction Of 4-Nitrophenol, Farhat Saira, Samia Saleemi, Humaira Razzaq, Rumana Qureshi

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Spectrophotometric monitoring of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) reduction by sodium borohydride (NaBH4) using gold nanoparticles (GNPs) as a catalyst has been extensively studied, but the stability of GNPs in terms of change in the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) at different temperatures has not been explored. In the present investigation, our aim was to evaluate the SPR stability of GNPs as a catalyst during the reduction of 4-NP at different elevated temperatures (i.e. 30-60 °C) and sodium borohydride concentrations. Sensitivity of this degradation process toward concentration of GNPs at a range of temperatures is also evaluated. The spectrophotometric results reveal that up to …

Quantification Of Hemoglobin In Human Blood To Differentiate Individuals From One Another, Audrey Jeanne Auleley Jan 2019

Quantification Of Hemoglobin In Human Blood To Differentiate Individuals From One Another, Audrey Jeanne Auleley

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Blood is one of the principal sources of evidence in crime scene investigations. The level of hemoglobin in human blood is known to hardly fluctuate over time in a healthy adult patient. Using a method like the sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) method for hemoglobin level determination is beneficial because SLS converts any other derivates of hemoglobin into methemoglobin. The amount of hemoglobin would be determined using the linear correlation between the absorbance of methemoglobin and its amount in blood samples. Those curves differ significantly from sample to sample. Therefore, a differentiation can be observed between the blood samples of different …

Moreover, the limit of detection and …

Binding Of Oxygen To Human Hemoglobin Within The Erythrocyte Using Icam Spectrophotometry, Kyle K. Hill Apr 2016

Binding Of Oxygen To Human Hemoglobin Within The Erythrocyte Using Icam Spectrophotometry, Kyle K. Hill

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Many of the spectrophotometric techniques used to determine the properties of intracellular human hemoglobin cannot be utilized due to the turbidity of erythrocyte suspensions. An Integrating Cavity Absorption Meter, or ICAM, allows for absorption measurements of strongly scattering samples in the visible-light region of the spectrum. The spectrum of oxygenated hemoglobin within erythrocytes is significantly different from the absorption spectrum of oxygenated hemoglobin in solution. Studies of the oxygen binding to hemoglobin in erythrocytes allowed the four sequential binding constants (Adair constants) to be determined and compared with those of hemoglobin in solution. The Adair constants for hemoglobin in solution …

Determination Of Pb(Ii) In Natural Water With Dibromo-P-Methyl-Sulfonazo By The Light-Absorption Ratio Variation Approach, Jie Zhang

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Pb ions can react sensitively with dibromo-p-methylsulfonazo (DMSA) to form a blue complex, whose absorption is maximal at 630 nm. By means of the light-absorption ratio variation approach (LARVA), the direct determination of Pb was developed in 0.3 M nitric acid and plots of \Delta A_r^{-1} vs. c_{Pb}^{-1} are linear where \Delta A_r is the light-absorption ratio variation and c_{Pb} Pb(II) concentration is between 0 and 5.0 mg/L. The limit of detection (3\sigma) of Pb(II) is only 0.02 mg/L. This method was applied to direct analysis of natural water with satisfactory results.
