Ferrocenium Salt Aided Substitution Reactions And Synthesis Of Glycosylated Curcumin Derivatives, Deva Saroja Talasila Nov 2022

Ferrocenium Salt Aided Substitution Reactions And Synthesis Of Glycosylated Curcumin Derivatives, Deva Saroja Talasila

Dissertations

Organic synthesis has been significantly advanced with the employment of transition metal complexes. The discovery of transition metal catalysts provided the synthetic community with powerful tools for accelerating reactions and making them more selective and efficient. Many chemical reactions do not happen without a catalyst.

Iron-based catalysts have several advantages for the chemical industry because it is a non-toxic and ecologically friendly metal. Our group previously found that ferrocenium cations with a 3+ oxidation state of iron-catalyzed propargylic substitution reactions at low temperatures. The sandwich structure of ferrocenes allows substituents to be introduced on the cyclopentadienyl rings, which allows for …

Theory Of Aqueous Solvation: Uninterrupted, Cyclic Hydrogen-Bonding Essential For Accurate Keto-Enol Energies And Grotthuss Tautomerism Of Acetone, Mark Recznik Aug 2022

Theory Of Aqueous Solvation: Uninterrupted, Cyclic Hydrogen-Bonding Essential For Accurate Keto-Enol Energies And Grotthuss Tautomerism Of Acetone, Mark Recznik

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Keto-enol tautomerization (KET) is a fundamental process impacting a range of molecular phenomena in organic and biochemistry. However, the accurate computation of solution-phase KET energies remains a challenge, even for prototypical acetone.

In Part I, keto-enol tautomers of acetone were incorporated into solvent clusters that interact via uninterrupted, cyclic hydrogen-bonding (UCHB) networks. An empirical model was created to predict accurate KET energies, Etaut, of simple carbonyl compounds. Based on the availability of experimental data and structural simplicity, acetone was selected as a prototype. A discrete-continuum strategy was employed – accounting simultaneously for local noncovalent interactions and bulk-phase effects …

Simple Arenes As Aryne Synthetic Equivalents Via Sulfonium Salt Intermediates, Riley A. Roberts May 2022

Simple Arenes As Aryne Synthetic Equivalents Via Sulfonium Salt Intermediates, Riley A. Roberts

Student Research Symposium

Arynes are ephemeral molecules that are yet to be fully exploited in synthetic strategy because they are often challenging to access. These reactive intermediates participate in a myriad of reactions that conventional chemistry is incapable of, making them extremely useful for the synthesis of important molecules like pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. While classical approaches for synthesizing arynes employ cheap starting material, extremely harsh reagents are necessary to generate the aryne. In contrast, methods that do not require harsh reaction conditions do require starting material that is exceedingly difficult to synthesize. To access arynes quickly and efficiently, the work described herein aims …

Visual Demonstration Of Substituent Effects For Chromium(Vi) Alcohol Oxidation, Biyu (Chelsea) Zhao May 2022

Visual Demonstration Of Substituent Effects For Chromium(Vi) Alcohol Oxidation, Biyu (Chelsea) Zhao

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

This research visualized the effect of different substituents, which could be either activators or deactivators on an aromatic ring for alcohol oxidants using Chromium(VI). The color of chromic acid changes from orange to blue gradually, providing a method to visualize the rate. Rate constants were used as a quantitative method to evaluate the rate.

Synthesis Of Β,Β-Disubstituted Styrenes Via Trimethylsilyl Trifluoromethanesulfonate-Promoted Aldehyde-Aldehyde Aldol Addition-Deformylative Elimination., Grant J. Dixon, Michael R. Rodriguez, Tyler G. Chong, Kevin Y. Kim, C. Wade Downey Jan 2022

Synthesis Of Β,Β-Disubstituted Styrenes Via Trimethylsilyl Trifluoromethanesulfonate-Promoted Aldehyde-Aldehyde Aldol Addition-Deformylative Elimination., Grant J. Dixon, Michael R. Rodriguez, Tyler G. Chong, Kevin Y. Kim, C. Wade Downey

Chemistry Faculty Publications

In the presence of trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (TMSOTf) and 2,6-lutidine, α,α-disubstituted aldehydes condense with electron-rich aromatic aldehydes to yield β, β- disubstituted styrenes. More electron-rich aromatic aldehydes react more rapidly and in higher yield. Preliminary results suggest that the reaction may proceed via the ionization and formal deformylation of an aldol intermediate.

Lipophilic Probes For Cellular Ethylene Detection, Morgan R. Brown Jan 2022

Lipophilic Probes For Cellular Ethylene Detection, Morgan R. Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The structure of ethylene is simple, yet its biological effects are significant. When considering its role in biology it is almost exclusively regarded as a plant hormone. Research on ethylene from plants was progressed by several advancements in analytical instrumentation, from its discovery to elucidation of its signaling pathway. There is currently limited understanding of ethylene’s role in mammals, but evidence suggests that it may be a biomarker for oxidative stress! Additional tools and technology are crucial to study this surprising and important signaling role in mammals. Our group has developed molecular ethylene probes as a strategy to detect ethylene …
