An Investigation Into The Use Of Ionic Liquid Solvents As Potential Therapeutic Agents To Help Alleviate Disease Caused By The Formation Of Insoluble Plaque Or Depositions, Sundus Alchaar
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Many diseases are caused or worsened by the formation of insoluble aggregates inside the human body, most of which are currently treated by maintenance medication or surgery. Biocompatible Ionic Liquids (ILs) have been explored for use as therapeutic agents, and are also excellent solvents, due to their versatile physical and chemical properties. The aim of this project was to conduct a preliminary exploration of the use of ILs to dissolve different types of depositions, such as kidney stones and crystal-induced arthropathies, and plaques. An imidazolium-based IL and four biocompatible choline amino acid-based ILs ([Ch][AA]-ILs) were synthesized, which are 1-methyl-3-butyl-methylimidazolium iodide …

Synthesis Of Pyridinium-Based Ionic Liquids And Their Application To Improve Candida Rugosa Lipase Stability In A Methanol-Water Solvent System, Oktavianus Cipta, Anita Alni, Rukman Hertadi
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
This paper studied the effect of pyridinium-based ionic liquids as cosolvents in a methanol-water solvent system on the hydrolytic activity of Candida rugosa lipase. These ionic liquids were successfully synthesized using imidazolium-based ionic liquid synthesizing methods with a certain adjustment. The hydrolytic activity of Candida rugosa lipase was analyzed using 4-nitrophenol acetate (pNPA) and 4-nitrophenol palmitate (pNPP) as substrates. The addition of ionic liquids had no significant effect on the hydrolytic activity of lipase in a water solvent, and it had a greater effect in methanol. The addition of [C6Py] Br ionic liquid as a methanol cosolvent (methanol: ionic liquid, …

Selective Adsorption Of Acidic Gases From Ternary Mixture By Acetate- And Sulfonate-Based Ionic Liquids At Molecular Level, Sadi̇ye Veli̇oğlu
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
This paper attempts to elucidate the competitive adsorption mechanism of thin films of ionic liquids (ILs) on the surface of porous materials for acidic gases at a molecular level in order to design a proper material for the diminishment of gas emissions. Thin film 1-butyl-3-methylimidazalium ([BMIM]+) cation-based IL systems composed of four different anions such as [CH3CO2]- and [CF3CO2]- (acetate-based), and [CH3SO3]- and [CF3SO3]- (sulfonate-based) are created in contact with the gas phase containing ternary H2S/CO2/CH4:1/25/74 mixture. To define gas adsorption performance at gas?liquid interface and bulk liquid phase, classical molecular dynamics simulations are carried out. Adsorption of acidic gases …

Assessment Of Environmental Pollutants At Trace Levels Using Ionic Liquids-Based Liquid-Phase Microextraction, Furkan Uzcan, Muhammad Saqaf Jagirani, Mustafa Soylak
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Sample preparation is the crucial and most challenging part of analytical chemistry for the speciation of environmental pollutants' traces. Along with the development of the sample preparation methods, the ionic liquid-based microextraction technique plays an important role. Due to the unequivocally unique "green" characteristic of ionic liquids (ILs), they owe their tunable properties, such as highly selective and high reaction efficiency, reusability, and good thermal stability, to present advancements in the sample preparation process. The ionic liquid-based microextraction techniques miniaturize the sample preparation process. Liquid phase microextraction intermediate solvents, desorption solvent extractants, and mediators have been used. They are quoting …

Alkylating reagents based on thioimidazolium ionic liquids were synthesized and the influence of the anion on the alkylation reaction mechanism explored in detail using both experimental and computational methods. Thioimidazolium cations transfer alkyl substituents to nucleophiles, however the reaction rate was highly dependent on anion identity, demonstrating that the anion is not innocent in the mechanism. Detailed analysis of the computationally-derived potential energy surfaces associated with possible mechanisms indicated that this dependence arises from a combination of anion induced electronic, steric and coordinating effects, with highly nucleophilic anions catalyzing a 2-step process while highly non-nucleophilic, delocalized anions favor a 1-step …

Visualizing And Analyzing Structures Of Coordination Polymers Synthesized In Ionic Liquids, Natalie Husby, Akane Inoue, Hilary Eppley
Annual Student Research Poster Session
Synthesis of metal organic frameworks can result in different products based on the solvent that is used. One option is to use ionic liquids (ILs, or room temperature molten salts) to create novel metal organic coordination polymers. Our group analyzed metal organic polymers synthesized in ILs with the goal of cataloging the topology of the structures, the connectivity of the organic ligands, and the roles of the ILs in the syntheses. We used Sci-Finder Scholar to find papers where compounds were synthesized using ILs, and determined whether the IL played the role as the cation, anion, or neither in the …

Alkyl-imidazolium chloride ionic liquids (ILs) have been broadly studied for biochemical and biomedical technologies. They can permeabilize lipid bilayer membranes and have cytotoxic effects, which makes them targets for drug delivery biomaterials. We assessed the lipid-membrane permeabilities of ILs with increasing alkyl chain lengths from ethyl to octyl groups on large unilamellar vesicles using a trapped-fluorophore fluorescence lifetime-based leakage experiment. Only the most hydrophobic IL, with the octyl chain, permeabilizes vesicles, and the concentration required for permeabilization corresponds to its critical micelle concentration. To correlate the model vesicle studies with biological cells, we quantified the IL permeabilities and cytotoxicities on …

Thermally stable, flexible polymer gel electrolytes with high ionic conductivity are prepared by mixing the ionic liquid 1‐butyl‐1‐methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (C4mpyrTFSI), LiTFSI and poly(vinylidene difluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene (PVDF‐HFP). FT‐IR and Raman spectroscopy show that an amorphous film is obtained for high (60 %) C4mpyrTFSI contents. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) confirms that the polymer gels are stable below ∼300 °C in both nitrogen and air environments. Ionic conductivity of 1.9×10−3 S cm−2 at room temperature is achieved for the 60 % ionic liquid loaded gel. Germanium (Ge) anodes maintain a coulombic efficiency above 95 % after 90 cycles in …

We have investigated myoglobin protein denaturation using the zwitterionic detergent Empigen BB (EBB, N,N-Dimethyl-N-dodecylglycine betaine). A combination of absorbance, fluorescence, and circular dichroism spectroscopic measurements elucidated the protein denaturation and heme dissociation from myoglobin. The results indicated that Empigen BB was not able to fully denature the myoglobin structure, but apparently can induce the dissociation of the heme group from the protein. This provides a way to estimate the heme binding free energy, ΔGdissociation. As ionic liquids (ILs) have been shown to perturb the myoglobin protein, we have investigated the effects of the ILs 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BMICl), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EMIAc), …

An Investigation On The Structure Of Au(111)/Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquid Interface: Effect Of Alkyl Side Chain Length, Li Chen, Shuai Liu, Mian-Gang Li, Jian-Jia Su, Jia-Wei Yan, Bing-Wei Mao
Journal of Electrochemistry
In this work, we comparatively investigated the interfacial structures at Au(111) electrode surfaces in two ionic liquids (ILs) with different alkyl chain lengths by combining AFM force curve technique and electrochemical methods. The number and stability of the layering structures, and their potential-dependency were analyzed. The experimental results indicated that the tendencies of force-potential curves in the two ILs behave the same way. At potentials close to PZC, the ions arrange loosely, which lowers the stability of the layering structure. As the potential shifting away from PZC, more ions attach to electrode surface, which increases the stability of layering structure, …
Oxidation Of Β-O-4 Lignin Model Compounds And Application To Lignin Linkage Degradation Facilitated By Mechanochemical Treatment And Two-Step Oxidative Depolymerization, Soledad G. Yao
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
The oxidation of lignin model compounds was studied in conventional solvents in parallel with oxidations in ionic liquid solvents. Catalyst systems were investigated in ionic liquid solvents to determine how reaction rates and the selectivity for benzylic carbon oxidation were affected. Oxidation rates were often lower in ionic liquids than in conventional solvents ‒ as indicated by lower conversion in a standard reaction time ‒ likely due, at least in part, to the higher viscosity of ionic liquids. Mechano chemical treatment of Indulin AT kraft lignin by ball milling with KOH and toluene produced significant carbonyl functionality, among other changes. …

Altering The Coordination Of Iron Porphyrins By Ionic Liquid Nanodomains In Mixed Solvent Systems, Abderrahman Atifi, Michael D. Ryan
Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
The solvent environment around iron porphyrin complexes was examined using mixed molecular/RTIL (room temperature ionic liquid) solutions. The formation of nanodomains in these solutions provides different solvation environments for substrates that could have significant impact on their chemical reactivity. Iron porphyrins (Fe(P)), whose properties are sensitive to solvent and ligation changes, were used to probe the molecular/RTIL environment. The addition of RTILs to molecular solvents shifted the redox potentials to more positive values. When there was no ligation change upon reduction, the shift in the E° values were correlated to the Gutmann acceptor number, as was observed for other …

Investigation On Laser Induced Deposition Of Cu-Based Materials At [Bmim]Bf4/Pt Electrode Interface, Min-Min Xu, Jin-Hua Mei, Jian-Lin Yao, Ren-Ao Gu
Journal of Electrochemistry
By controlling the negative potential, Cu-based materials were deposited at the [BMIm]BF4/Pt electrode interface under the laser irradiation. The effects of laser power and irradiation time on the yield of deposition products were studied by using different laser powers and different irradiation time. The product yield could be directly determined by the size of deposition point through the observation from the optical microscope. Further mechanism study combined with the formula deduced that the thermal effect of the laser could make the electrode surface temperature rise 110 degrees, which can promote the occurrence of electrodeposition. By SEM characterization, the …

Application Of An Ionic Liquid Column To The Analysis Of Flavor And Fragrance Ingredients, Nicole L. Curto
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Traditional, polar (polyethylene glycol/wax) stationary phase gas chromatography columns pose challenges for flavor and fragrance analysis particularly in regards to thermal instability at high temperatures, degradation when exposed to water, unchanging selectivity, and relatively short shelf lives. Recently, capillary columns using ionic liquids as stationary phases have become available. Ionic liquid columns offer a potential combination of high polarity and high temperature stability with unique selectivity. An in depth discussion about the history and development of column phase characterization, with specific emphasis on selectivity and polarity, will allow for a critical look at the polarity scale currently employed to characterize …

Phosphonium/Phosphate Ionic Liquids As Lubricant Additives: The Synthesis And Testing Of Six Novel Ils, Matthew Scott Welmers
Graduate Theses - Chemistry and Biochemistry
In this study, ionic liquids (ILs) are defined as ionic materials with a melting temperature >100oC. ILs are characterized by their organic moieties which prevent crystallization, forcing the liquid phase. ILs are desirable as lubricant additives because of their ability to be fine-tuned by varying the identity of the cation/anion as well as the various organic functional moieties therein. Several novel phosphonium/phosphate ILs have been successfully synthesized via a simple, straightforward process. In this work a series of symmetric and asymmetric anionic phosphodiesters are developed and coordinated with two asymmetric alkyl phosphonium cations. These ILs are tested in SAE 10W30 …

Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatographymass spectrometry (LC-MS) are powerful analytical techniques that combine the separation power in a stationary phase with the detection power of mass spectrometry. GCMS and LC-MS have gained dominant positions in identifying and quantifying different analyte species due to their high selectivity, high sensitivity, and high reproducibility.
My research utilizes the analytical power of LC-MS and GC-MS to address two environmental issues: 1) Identification of biodegradation products of the ionic liquid 1- butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BMIMCl) by an activated sludge microbial community using LC-MS and 2) identification and quantification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in …

Application Of Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry For Ionic Liquids And Their Biodegradation Products, Sepideh Rahbarirad
Masters Theses
Ionic liquids (ILs) are organic salts with unique physico-chemical properties and are used as green alternatives to volatile organic solvents. ESI-MS is a sensitive technique to detect these stable, permanent ions. My research focused on (1) Identification of biodegradation products of ionic liquids and (2) Multiplexed tandem MS by modulation of ionization efficiency.
Studies, have demonstrated that ILs are toxic to the environment, which makes their biodegradability an important consideration. In this work, metabolites generated during the biodegradation of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BMIM), a degradation resistant and commonly used ionic liquid, are identified using high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS).

The synthesis and fluorescent analysis of chiral light emitting ionic liquids made from lanthanide-doped chiral amino acid ionic liquids is described in this thesis. The ionic liquids were composed of tetrabutylammonium (TBA) cation with enantiomers of the amino acids valine, proline, and aspartate as anionic counterions. These ionic liquids of varying amino acid composition were doped with europium trifluoromethanesulfonate (triflate) and analyzed by circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). The sign of the CPL signal corresponded to the handedness of the amino acids in the ionic liquids. Europium triflate concentration dependent CPL in both [TBA][Val] and [TBA][L-Pro] ionic liquids was measured from …

Eosin-Y exhibits high affinity and emission based spectral response to most of the major ions in water samples. In the present study we performed selective spectrofluorimetric analysis of manganese with eosin-Y in the presence of potential interferents. We employed green chemistry reagents, ionic liquids (ILs) and two different micelles, to suppress the effect of conventional cations and anions on the response of eosin-Y. The experimental data revealed that different test moieties caused enhanced analytical response to Mn$^{2+}$. The highest analytical signal of eosin-Y was obtained in the presence of Triton X-100 at a concentration of 2.0 $\times $ 10$^{-3}$ mol …

Exploring The Chemistry Of Phosphorus For Photopolymer Applications, Ryan Guterman
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Prior to this thesis, phosphorus-containing polymers and photopolymerization represented two distinct, non-overlapping fields of study. This thesis examined the prospect of combining these two approaches to create a system possessing the benefits of both techniques. By exploiting the chemistry of phosphorus, and using photopolymerization as a fabrication method, new materials were developed and assessed for their use in various applications.
Among the many phosphorus compounds that may be used in polymer science, phosphonium salts and primary phosphines were of specific focus. First, highly fluorinated phosphonium monomers were developed to create photopolymerized hydrophobic surfaces. A structure-activity relationship was established, as both …

DNA extraction represents a significant bottleneck in nucleic acid analysis. In this study, hydrophobic magnetic ionic liquids (MILs) were synthesized and employed as solvents for the rapid and efficient extraction of DNA from aqueous solution. The DNA-enriched microdroplets were manipulated by application of a magnetic field. The three MILs examined in this study exhibited unique DNA extraction capabilities when applied toward a variety of DNA samples and matrices. High extraction efficiencies were obtained for smaller single-stranded and double-stranded DNA using the benzyltrioctylammonium bromotrichloroferrate(III) ([(C8)3BnN+][FeCl3Br–]) MIL, while the dicationic 1,12-di(3-hexadecylbenzimidazolium)dodecane bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide bromotrichloroferrate(III) ([(C16BnIM)2C122+][NTf2–, FeCl3Br–]) MIL produced higher extraction efficiencies for larger …

Macrocycles, such as crown ethers (CRs) and resorcinarenes (RESs), exhibit selective complexation of heavy metal ions and organic pollutants respectively. Consequently, they have been investigated for their suitability in adsorbing these aqueous pollutants. However, they are difficult to handle and recycle for reuse because, by themselves, they can only be fabricated in powder form. To alleviate this challenge, we developed a method to encapsulate these macrocycles into film-forming polysaccharides--cellulose (CEL) and chitosan (CS). This was achieved by using a green and recyclable solvent, an ionic liquid, to dissolve both macrocycles and polysaccharides and regenerate corresponding composites in water. Resultant composites …
