The Optimization Of Anion Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells And Water Electrolyzers By Varying Catalyst Design And Changing Gas Inlet Composition, Jasmine D. Bohannon Oct 2022

The Optimization Of Anion Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells And Water Electrolyzers By Varying Catalyst Design And Changing Gas Inlet Composition, Jasmine D. Bohannon

Theses and Dissertations

Researchers around the globe are looking to avoid the consequences of climate change by shifting away from the burning of fossil fuels as a source of energy. While using fossil fuels have negatively affected the earth’s climate for at least the last hundred and fifty years, the introduction of renewables looks to use abundant and naturally occurring resources. Sources of renewable energy include solar power, wind power, hydropower, geothermal energy, and biomass2 . These sources work by converting the abundant source into mechanical, electrical, or chemical energy that can be used to power industrial plants or residential areas and they …

Chromatographic Dynamic Chemisorption, Shreya Thakkar Jun 2022

Chromatographic Dynamic Chemisorption, Shreya Thakkar

Masters Theses

Reaction rates of catalytic cycles over supported metal catalysts are normalized by the exposed metal atoms on the catalyst surface, reported as site time yields which provide a rigorous standard to compare distinct metal surfaces. Defined as the fraction of exposed metal surface atoms to the total number of metal atoms, it is important to measure the dispersion of supported metal catalysts to report standardized rates for kinetic investigations. Multiple characterization techniques such as electron microscopy, spectroscopy and chemisorption are exploited for catalyst dispersion measurements. While effective, electron microscopy and spectroscopy are not readily accessible due to cost and maintenance …

Electrocatalytic “Volcano-Type” Effect Of Nano-Tio2 (A)/(R) Phase Content In Pt/Tio2-CnX Catalyst, Ai-Lin Cui, Yang Bai, Hong-Ying Yu, Hui-Min Meng May 2022

Electrocatalytic “Volcano-Type” Effect Of Nano-Tio2 (A)/(R) Phase Content In Pt/Tio2-CnX Catalyst, Ai-Lin Cui, Yang Bai, Hong-Ying Yu, Hui-Min Meng

Journal of Electrochemistry

The relationship between the electrochemical activity of fuel cell catalysts and Pt particle size, as well as the catalyst support and co-catalyst is still unclear. In this work, FESEM, XRD, BET, TEM and CV techniques were adopted to investigate the effects of TiO2 anatase (A)/rutile (R) phases content on the electrochemical activity of Pt electrocatalyst. The results showed that the anatase-rutile phase transformation occurred during the heat treatment of TiO2 at 700 ~ 900 oC accompanied by the growth of two-phase crystalline size, and anatase was completely transformed into rutile at 900 oC. TEM results revealed that the …

Computational Analysis Of A Mn-Based Electrocatalyst With Primary Amine Substituents In The Secondary Coordination Sphere For Co2 Reduction, Erin Urban May 2022

Computational Analysis Of A Mn-Based Electrocatalyst With Primary Amine Substituents In The Secondary Coordination Sphere For Co2 Reduction, Erin Urban

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The purpose of this research was to report the mechanism for the two-electron, two-proton conversion of CO 2 to CO and H 2 O using a manganese(I) electrocatalyst, Mn(L)(CO) 3 Br (where L = bipyridyl ligand with aryl-amine moieties installed at the 6 position of 2,2’-bipyridine), synthesized by the Jurss group, including any other competing reactions, such as the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The “protonation- first” and “reduction-first” pathways were considered for CO 2 RR. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to determine the redox potentials and Gibb’s free energies for each step in the mechanism for CO 2 …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Ternary Pt Nanoally Catalysts For Fuel Cells, Ylith Peck May 2022

Synthesis And Characterization Of Ternary Pt Nanoally Catalysts For Fuel Cells, Ylith Peck

Undergraduate Honors Theses

A hydrogen fuel cell is an electrochemical device that converts oxygen and hydrogen into electrical energy while producing water as the only by-product, which has attracted growing interest, especially in the automotive industry. This technology is efficient and has zero pollution to the environment, in contrast to the direct use of fossil fuels in combustion engines which produce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. One of the key components for hydrogen fuel cells is the catalyst that operates at the cathode, which currently use platinum. Due to the scarce amount of platinum in the world, the manufacturing cost for fuel cells …

Friedel-Crafts Alkylation Of Benzene With A Superacid Catalyst, Josh T. Cutright May 2022

Friedel-Crafts Alkylation Of Benzene With A Superacid Catalyst, Josh T. Cutright

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Long-chain alkylbenzenes are industrially synthesized precursors to commercial surfactants such as laundry detergent. The currently used catalysts in the processes of their synthesis are corrosive and harmful to the environment. These problems can be avoided utilizing heterogeneous highly acidic catalysts. Solid catalysts do not corrode equipment and are relatively simple to remove from the post-reaction mixture. Phosphotungstic acid (PTA) supported on silica gel could be a possible catalyst due to its high acidity with an estimated pKa ≈ -13. The catalyst PTA-SiO2 was prepared via the sol-gel method to covalently embed it in a silica support. The catalyst was …

Synthesis And Advanced Characterization Of Energy Materials, Erik Sarnello Jan 2022

Synthesis And Advanced Characterization Of Energy Materials, Erik Sarnello

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Catalysts are used in an extremely broad range of systems including everything from biological systems to industrial processes. An ideal catalyst offers robust stability and high activity. This work focuses on the synthesis and characterization of materials that show promise in the field of catalysis. Advanced synchrotron characterization techniques and unique experimental design are highlighted to provide foundation work that will provide the necessary information to aid in designing and fabricating catalytic materials. Supported metal nanoparticle (SMN) catalysts are enormously crucial for many catalytic applications. However, catalyst deactivation, caused by sintering and coke formation, is a ubiquitous problem that significantly …

The Relation Between Surface Acidity And Moo3:Al2o3 Ratio On The Ternary Mixed Oxide Catalysts For The Conversion Of Propan-2-Ol, Hani Zeidan, Ebru Erünal, Mustafa Esen Marti Jan 2022

The Relation Between Surface Acidity And Moo3:Al2o3 Ratio On The Ternary Mixed Oxide Catalysts For The Conversion Of Propan-2-Ol, Hani Zeidan, Ebru Erünal, Mustafa Esen Marti

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

In this study, ternary mixed oxide catalysts containing Al2O3-MoO3-MgO and Al2O3-MoO3-WO3 were prepared with a changing ratio of MoO3:Al2O3 between 0.05 and 20.00. All catalysts showed 100% selectivity towards propene during the conversion of propan-2-ol at temperatures between 220 and 400 °C. The catalysts prepared from WO3 possessed very strong acid sites, which cause higher catalytic activity than catalysts prepared from MgO. Besides, the ratio of MoO3:Al2O3 was found to be directly proportional to the conversion …
