Molecular Mechanism Of Cyanobacteria Circadian Clock Oscillator And Effect Of Co Factors On Its Oscillation, Manpreet Kaur
Molecular Mechanism Of Cyanobacteria Circadian Clock Oscillator And Effect Of Co Factors On Its Oscillation, Manpreet Kaur
Dissertations
The circadian rhythms arise as an adaptation to the environmental 24-hour day and night cycle due to Earth's rotation. These rhythms prepare organisms to align their internal biological activities and day to day behavior or events with the environmental change of the 24-hour day and night cycle. Circadian rhythms are found widely in all living kingdoms of life on Earth. Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic prokaryotes which first used to study these circadian rhythms. Among cyanobacterial species, Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942 (henceforth, S. Elongatus) is the simplest organism with a durable and sturdy circadian clock and is study as a model organism. …
The Aging And Impacts Of Atmospheric Soot: Closing The Gap Between Experiments And Models, Ogochukwu Yvonne Enekwizu
The Aging And Impacts Of Atmospheric Soot: Closing The Gap Between Experiments And Models, Ogochukwu Yvonne Enekwizu
Dissertations
The main goal of this dissertation is to generate data and parameterizations to accurately represent soot aerosols in atmospheric models. Soot from incomplete combustion of fossil fuels and biomass burning is a major air pollutant and a significant contributor to climate warming. The environmental impacts of soot are strongly dependent on the particle morphology and mixing state, which evolve continuously during atmospheric transport via a process known as aging. To make predictions of soot impacts on the environment, most atmospheric models adopt simplifications of particle structure and mixing state, which lead to substantial uncertainties. Using an experimentally constrained modeling approach, …
Modeling Mass Transfer And Chemical Reaction In Industrial Nitrocellulose Manufacturing Processes, Francis Patrick Sullivan
Modeling Mass Transfer And Chemical Reaction In Industrial Nitrocellulose Manufacturing Processes, Francis Patrick Sullivan
Dissertations
A series of models are proposed to describe the production of military grade nitrocellulose from dense cellulose materials in mixtures of nitric acid, sulfuric acid, and water. This effort is conducted to provide a predictive capability for analyzing the rate and extent of reaction achieved under a range of reaction conditions used in the industrial nitrocellulose manufacturing process for sheeted cellulose materials. Because this capability does not presently exist, nitrocellulose producers have historically relied on a very narrow range of cellulose raw materials and resorted to trial and error methods to develop processing conditions for new materials. This tool enables …

Development Of Novel Membranes For Nanocarbon Enhanced Separation With Application In Biofuels And Solvent Recover, Oindrila Gupta
Development Of Novel Membranes For Nanocarbon Enhanced Separation With Application In Biofuels And Solvent Recover, Oindrila Gupta
Dissertations
Pharmaceutical industries historically have had one of the highest amounts of solvent waste generated per unit of drug manufactured. Energy requirements and carbon footprint of current solvent recycling processes tend to be quite high, and the incineration of the solvents for waste disposal produces toxic air emissions. Also, rapidly increasing demand for energy and strict regulation on engine pollutant emissions have necessitated the use of alcohol as carbon-neutral fuels. Thermal distillation is one of the most common methods for the separation of alcohol-water mixtures. However, its application is limited due to energy requirements and high operating costs, and heating to …

Preparations And Sodium Storage Properties Of Ni3S2@Cnt Composite, Ming-Tao Duan, Yan-Shuang Meng, Hong-Shuai Zhang
Journal of Electrochemistry
Transition metal sulfides (TMSs)-based electrode materials with highly reversible sodium storage have attracted extensive attentions as one of the most prospective electrode materials for sodium ion batteries (SIBs). However, low cycling stability and rate property caused by large volume expansion and poor electronic conductivity during the electrochemical reaction still hamper their further practical application. In this work, in-situ encapsulated Ni3S2 nanoparticles in carbon nanotubes (Ni3S2@CNT) have been successfully fabricated as an anode material for high-performance SIBs by a one-step solid-phase calcination process. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), …

Preparation And Process Optimization Of Cathode Materials For Lithium-Sulfur Batteries, Kai Wu
Journal of Electrochemistry
Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries represent promising candidates for next-generation energy storage system due to their high energy density and low material cost. However, the industrial application of Li-S batteries remains challenges because of the shuttle effect from lithium polysulfides and the lack of facial routes for Li-S battery preparation. To solve these problems, a cathode consisting of different commercial carbon materials, namely, acetylene black (SP), Ketjen Black (KB) and carbon nanotube (CNT), with sulfur (S) is prepared separately for Li-S battery. After the process of 8-h ball milling for KB/S composite, together with the polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) binder, the cathode could …

Effect Of 18-Crown-6 Additive On Chromium Electrodeposition In Ionic Liquid, Yi-Jie Wang, Dong-Fang Niu, Xin-Sheng Zhang
Journal of Electrochemistry
Trivalent chromium ion (Cr3+) is used for electrodeposition due to its low toxicity. Electrodeposition in ionic liquids can greatly solve for hydrogen evolution problem. However,as a widely used Cr(III) precursor, chromium chloride hydrate (CrCl3·6H2O), still contains water. In the presence of water, Cr3+ will form a complex coordination structure with water molecules ([Cr(H2O)6]3+), which is a stable octahedral structure and is difficult to be directly reduced to chromium metal. Therefore, coordination agents should be added into the bath. In this work, the effect of 18-Crown-6 additive on chromium electrodeposition was investigated in …

Electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) driven by renewable electricity that can meet both carbon emission reduction and renewable energy utilization has been rapidly developed in recent years. Copper (Cu) catalyst has long been a promising candidate for CO2 electroreduction applications because of its natural abundance and specific capability of producing a substantial amount of C2 products. However, various metallic Cu electrodes reported have been significantly influenced by the adsorption of certain cation/anion ions, resulting in wide-span catalytic activities and selectivity for various products. In addition, a recent report demonstrated that by virtue of gas-diffusion flow cell …

Journal of Electrochemistry
Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is a high-efficient clean conversion device for future energy management. Because of the low antioxidant reduction ability and complex thermal stress, the structure of traditional asymmetrical thin anode-supported planar SOFC is easily to be broken under stack operating conditions. To overcome these defects, a new complete symmetrical SOFC based on double-sided cathodes was developed. To study the influences of gas flow direction and current collection mode on the cell performance inside stack, a numerical model was established by finite element method based on the theory of electro-thermo-chemo multiphysical coupling. By applying this model, the molar …

Acid-Triggered Self-Assembled Egg White Protein-Coated Gold Nanoclusters For Selective Fluorescent Detection Of Fe3+, No2-, And Cysteine, Wenyan Li, Xiangping Wen, Hemiao Zhao, Wenjun Yan, John F. Trant, Yingqi Li
Chemistry and Biochemistry Publications
Herein, we present a simple and economical synthesis for the first multianalyte probe able to selectively quantify the concentrations of Fe3+, NO2-, and cysteine. It comprises H+-triggered self-assembled gold nanoclusters (AuNCs@EW/H+, AuEHs), showing enhanced red fluorescence at 640 nm. The AuEH is a good fluorescent nanosensor for Fe3+ and NO2- with detection limits of 1.40 and 2.82 nM, respectively. Iron detection, through fluorescence quenching, occurs because of nanocluster aggregation elicited by the complexation of Fe3+ with amino acids on the surface of AuEH; nitrite detection likely proceeds through fluorescence quenching via the disassembly of the nanoclusters following irreversible oxidation by …

The detection of CF+ in interstellar clouds potentially allows astronomers to infer the elemental fluorine abundance and the ionization fraction in ultraviolet-illuminated molecular gas. Because local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) conditions are hardly fulfilled in the interstellar medium (ISM), the accurate determination of the CF+ abundance requires one to model its non-LTE excitation via both radiative and collisional processes. Here, we report quantum calculations of rate coefficients for the rotational excitation of CF+ in collisions with para- and ortho-H2 (for temperatures up to 150 K). As an application, we present non-LTE excitation models that reveal population inversion …

Three chloronickel(II) complexes of PNN‐ pincer ligands with pyrazolyl and diphenylphosphino donors appended to different arms of diarylamido anchors were prepared and fully characterized. The three derivatives (1‐OMe, 1‐Me, 1‐CF3) differ only by the identity of the para‐aryl substituent on the pyrazolyl arm with 1‐OMe being 310 mV easier to oxidize than 1‐CF3. All three complexes are competent catalysts for hydrodehalogenation reactions of 1‐bromooctane and a variety of aryl halides in dimethylacetamide using NaBH4 as both base and hydride source. Comparative studies using diverse substrates showed that catalytic activity correlates with electron donor properties; …

Biologic drugs have gained enormous research attention in recent years as reflected by the development of multiple candidates to the clinical pipelines and an increased percentage of FDA approval. This is reasoned by the fact that biologics have been proven to deliver more predictive and promising benefits for many hard-to-cure diseases by ‘drugging the undruggable’ targets. However, the challenges associated with biologic drug development are multi-fold, viz, poor encapsulation efficacy, systemic instability, low cellular internalization and endosomal escape capability. Thus, it is essential to develop new molecular strategies that can not only address the associated drug delivery challenges, but also …

Engineered Proteins As Tools To Understand Ubiquitin Signaling, Lin Hui Chang
Doctoral Dissertations
Ubiquitin is a 76 amino acids protein that is evolutionary conserved in eukaryotes. It is an important signaling molecule in a plethora biological events, such as protein degradation, DNA damage response, and transcription. This thesis aims to develop engineered protein as a tool to study ubiquitin signaling. Through targeted mutagenesis and directed evolution, a deubiquitinase is reprogrammed into a transamidase, which lead to the generation of ubiquitinprotein conjugates with discrete ubiquitin linkages through auto-ubiquitination. These ubiquitin-protein conjugates could be used as a model substrate to profile their interaction of different ubiquitin interacting proteins. In addition, using directed evolution and deep …
