The strain energy in four three-membered rings is calculated by using the appropriate isodesmic reactions. Calculations with and without d functions on the heavy atoms indicate that while these polarization functions tend to reduce ring strain, the addition of d orbitals has little effect on the predicted trends. While introduciton of unsaturation drastically increases the strain in the carbon system (cyclopropane---. cyclopropene), this is not the case for silicon (silacyclopropane--+ silacyclopropene). As a result cyclopropane and cyclopropene are predicted to be the least and most strained rings, respectively.

Thermal Decomposition Kinetics Of Asf5-Doped Polyacetylene In Vacuum, T. Inoue, J. E. Osterholm, H. Yasuda, L. L. Levenson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electrical conductivity measurements, mass spectra of desorbing species, and ESCA surface analysis are reported for AsF5-doped polyacetylene heated between 50 and 130°C in vacuum. All measurements indicate first-order decomposition kinetics with activation energies between 13 and 20 kcal mole-1. Decomposition leads to the desorption of AsF3 and F2. Metallic arsenic remains in the polyacetylene as a decomposition by-product.

Two series of complexes trans-{Co(LL')EDDA}('+) and trans-{Co(LL')DMEDDA}('+), LL' = Meen, 2-Mepn, udmeen, sdmeen, R-dmepn were prepared. EDDA was reacted with cobalt(II) carbonate and the resulting solution combined with the diamine of choice. For the DMEDDA complexes the ligand DMEDDA was first prepared by adding neutralized chloroacetic acid to sdmeen and precipitating out the ligand as the barium salt. The DMEDDA complexes were prepared by reacting the barium salt first with cobalt(II) sulfate and then with the diamines listed above except udmeen. The DMEDDA complexes with R-pn were also prepared. Crystal structures of the charge transfer complex between anthracene and tetracyanobenzene, A:TCNB, C14H10: C10H2N4, at three temperatures (297, 234 and 226 K) above the order–disorder phase transition at 206 K and at four temperatures (202, 170, 138, and 119 K) below it have been determined from x-ray diffraction data. The space group of the room temperature phase was assigned as Cm with a = 9.528(2), b =12.779(3), c = 7.441(2) Å and β=92.39(2) degrees at 297 K and for the low temperature phase is P21/a with a =9.457(1), …

In the measurement of HO concentrations by laser-excited fluorescence, expansion of the sampled air offers a way to reduce fluorescent and photolytic interference by other species. The decrease in [HO] upon expansion is balanced by an increase in HO fluorescence yield over a wide range of pressures. Background air fluorescence is reduced if the responsible species have fluorescence yields higher than those of HO. Preliminary experiments indicate that most of the fluorescence observed in laboratory air is due to such species. Upon expansion, the suppression of fluorescent interference can be no greater than the reduction in pressure, whereas the suppression …

During the construction of a chemical processing plant, a polyphosphate product was selected for use as a corrosion inhibitor in the open recirculating cooling tower system. After several months of operation, problems in the system made evident the fact that polyphosphate as a corrosion inhibitor was not acceptable. An organic corrosion inhibitor was substituted for the phosphate, resulting in improved corrosion protection and the elimination of phosphate fouling.

Piperylene concentrate, the five-carbon olefin and diolefin by-product of ethylene production, is being produced in increasing quantities as liquid feedstocks become more prevalent. At present, the concentrate is used primarily in resin production for the adhesives industry. Since this use is economically unattractive, a separation of the concentrate into pure compounds is industrially desirable. The evaluation of the effectiveness of several solvents for extractive distillation of piperylene concentrate was performed. This study resulted in the selection of acetonitrile as the most effective and most economical solvent investigated. Various distillation conditions were studied and optimization was based on these results.

Density currents are commonly formed in reservoirs because of temperature or salinity induced density differences between inflowing and receiving waters. Anderson and Pritchard (1951) were among the first to demonstrate this in their investigations of density currents in Lake Mead. They found that the Colorado River formed an underflow in Lake Mead during the winter, an overflow in the spring and an interflow in the summer and fall. Wunderlich and Elder (1973) have since described the hydromechanics of these types of flow patterns, and density currents have been reported for several other large reservoirs (Carmack et al. 1979, Johnson and …

Double-exponential decay has been observed for tryptophan and tryptophan-containing dipeptides. The Stern-Volmer mechanism was used to detect such decay. Conformational energy calculations were undertaken to elucidate fluorescence properties of these peptides. Ionic strength effects were found, for the most part, to be unimportant in Stern-Volmer quenchng experiments.

A Comparison Of The Solvent And Temperature Dependence Of The Fluorescence Quantum Yield Of Methyl-1-, Methyl-2-, And Methyl-9-Anthroate, David B. Lyon

Two flouescence parameters, the room temperature quantum yield and the activation energy for nonradiative decay, were studied for the three possible monosbstituted methyl esters of anthroic acid in a number of aprotic, nonaromatic solvents. For the 1 and 2 substituted esters, the quantum yield increased and went through a maximum with decreasing S1 energy. In contrast, for methyl-9-anthroate, a general monotonic decrease in quantum yield with decreasing S1 energy was found. We assume, that intersystem crossing is the only nonradiative decay process that competes with flourescence for the esters. Since we find that the esters show temperature dependent flourescence, intersystem …

The N-alkylated gold (III) complex has been synthesized. The rate constant for the monobromination reaction was determined to be 132 ι mole -1 dec -1. The implications of such a value relative to similar non N0alkylated and other N-alkylated complexes are discussed.

A Study Of The Mechanism Of Ribonuclease-S Using Cndo/2 Electronic Structure Calculations, Michael Arato

Bovine Pancreatic Ribonuclease-S hydrolzes RNA molecules in a two step mechanism: 1. transphosphorylation, and 2. hydrolysis. The mechanism of the enzyme is studied using a model substrate for RNA, 2-hydroxyethyl methyl phosphate union. Electronic structure calculations are done at the CNDO/2 level, using the CININ optimization routine to minimize geometries. Two possible reaction paths are plotted for each step of the reaction, with the lowest activation energy path assumed to be the one taken by RNA. CNDO/2 results, however, yield negative activation anaeroles, a physically impossible result.

The rotational viscometer which had a uniform stress, designed by Dr. W. Philippoff was used for measuring the viscosities of 6% L-200 in PRIMOL 355 and Lekutherm x-30. Viscosities of 6% L-200 in PRIMOL 355 (polyisobutylene) was measured to check the change of material that was left in the visometer for almost two years. The result showed that the new viscosities are higher than the older results.

Immunologic competence is correlated with resistance to infectious disease which may be affected by exposure to certain compounds. Methyl parathion (MP) and carbofuran (CF) have been reported to affect the development of active immunity in the rabbit and the present research was conducted to quantify the dosage relationships of these two pesticides to both host resistance and acquired resistance in the mouse.

The depolarized Rayleigh spectra of aqueous solutions of pyridine have been studied using a high‐finesse Fabry–Perot interferometer as a function of temperature and concentration. The Rayleigh relaxation times are found to have a complex concentration and viscosity dependence. The classical Stokes–Einstein–Debye equation for molecular reorientation breaks down in this system. The Rayleigh relaxation time of pyridine molecules is not determined by the macroscopic shear viscosity of the solution. The specific interaction due to the formation of hydrogen bonds between pyridine and water molecules plays a very important role in affecting the relaxation time. Deterpenation by concentration of the flavor bearing oxygenated compounds present in Citrus Essential Oils using the column chromatographic method and the parameters affecting the adsorption of these oxygenated compounds at maximum economy versus reasonable efficiency in separation from the non-oxygenated compounds have been studied. Particular attention was given to the maximum number of adsorption-desorption-regeneration cycles that a single column charge could be subjected to before the adsorbent should be replaced. This report is based on the chemical analysis of the waters from 93 springs and 9 wells. Springs, when free from metal plumbing, provide an uncontaminated source of the ground water and it was desired to obtain water uncontaminated with metals. A few wells were added to the list, usually because of their unique location in the sampling grid.

Many samples of water, bottom sediment, and fish were analyzed for toxic metal ion content. The samples were collected from several selected sites along Kentucky and Barkley Lakes as well as the Cumberland River and several sub-impoundments along these aquatic systems. Emphasis was placed on selenium, although several other metal ions were determined. The results showed that there are no serious pollution problems with As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, Se, Sr, Zn, or Zr at any of the sites examined. Actually, none of the trace metals examined even come close to the EPA limits on fish, with the exception …

Single crystals of the black phenothiazine : pyromellitic dianhydride (PTZ:PMDA) 1:1 donor–acceptor complex, have been grown by sublimation from the zone-refined components. The PTZ:PMDA complex crystalizes with PĪ symmetry (Z = 2), a = 7.197(1), b = 19.072(5), c = 6.886(1) Å, α = 84.79(1) °, β = 72.98(1) °, γ = 85.72(2) ° at T = 23 °C. The Effects On Grain-Boundary Processes Of The Steps In The Boundary Plane Associated With The Cores Of Grain-Boundary Dislocations, Alexander H. King, D. A. Smith

The contribution of the associated steps to the properties of grain-boundary dislocations are investigated. Two methods of step-height determination are given and it is shown that the step height, like the Burgers vector, must be conserved during the reactions of grain-boundary dislocations: this is not always automatic and additional coherent steps must take part in some reactions. The energies associated with steps have been estimated and compared with the elastic energies of grain-boundary dislocations; these comparisons suggest that (a) the reduction of elastic energy alone may not be a sufficient criterion for the progress of a reaction and (b) that …
